Yep, looks like buffalo is dead. Walleyes really slowed down for me mid January. For a lake thats not that big she gets pounded very hard. Just think of the thousands of fish that have been pulled out in the last few months. And I mean thousands.

Anything happening on Buffalo yet? I'm heading out there for the first time in a few years for one last hoorah with the wheelhouse for the year.

How are the crappies doing?

Its been fished out!!! Now we can all wait another year for the next round of stocked 10 inchers to appear for us to take out before they get a chance to grow up!

I think there are still alot of nice fish in that lake.fish are returned as well, the bite is hot, everybody will be out there. The walleye population is heavy in buffalo, pulaski is a challenge but can be very rewarding.try deer that lake also hold's nice fish!

I think I might still give it a whirl! I will definitely move away from the crowds (at some distance, at least). Any other lakes you might suggest? I've done ok on Beebe, but.....That lake has kinda been like I tell my buddies about women, it's not all about quantity, but quality!

Yea some fish are returned, and several thousand have been taken. Thats why if you think about doing as well as everyone was 2-3 months ago, well what can you say.......And no the bite is not Hot right now.

What im saying is in 2 months after thousands of fish have been taken its theoretically impossible for the bite to be as good. Because there is several thousand less fish. Wouldn't that make sense? Or am I wrong? If you have two hundred gallon aquariums, one has ten crappies in it and the other has 5, which one are you more likely to catch a few crappies out of??????

Just returned from Buffalo...Nothing, didn't even mark fish. I tried some dif. spots that are not typically fished in the winter in hopes of finding fish. Drilled over 30 holes today and fished anywhere from 9-23' of water. Didn't go near any crowds or pressured areas and still no luck! Good luck to anyone that can find em!!

I forgot to mention....the ice is thick!!! I had my wheel house on 1 4" block and the auger handle went right to the floor! I didn't have a tape measure, but am glad there wasn't another inch of ice!

Fri overnight was slow, but depending on where you were, it was slow because you couldn't hook them, or it was slow because you didn't see fish. Some people hadd 10 hits overnight, just couldn't get them to eat it.

Sat overnight was OK action-wise, but the mid-season eye spots are producing large crappies - think spring spawn areas. Andd don't expect faast and furious action, but they are there. Sat overnight we missed 7 takes, cought one walleye, 3 crappies (2 over 12") and a channel cat.

Think spring!

We were marking some, but they were biting sporadically and light. We were set up in 18 fow. Near the break going into shore. I was thinking next time of trying the break that goes to the little 7' flat. It seems to drop quickly around the 7' area.

I was thinking of hitting the flats them selves in the evenings. Cut the holes early, just thinking small bait fish or insects may draw some fish on top.

Was out last night and tonight from about 5 to 8. Marking TONS of fish, but nothing is taking. Pulling a few small crappies out, but nothing kept. Dropped the camera down and most of what i've been seeing is small perch and sunnies. Crappies are down there, but are smaller and VERY tight lipped. Tried minnows of all sizes, red larvae and waxies. You have to work really hard for a nice keeper. Did have friends pull 3 walleyes out last night, but only one good eater. The hunt continues!

Hopefully he meant only one good eater as in: amonst the 3 walleyes that were caught, only one nice one to speak of.

Crappies still hammering. Went ballistic on waxies last night during the normal 45 minute window in the snow storm. Nearly all males. Seems the larger fish have moved out. As someone mentioned last week - the transition to the spawning areas has most likely begun. (at least in the area I've been fishing) Even got a nice bonus 10" perch, first one out there all winter. Time to search out shallower water with the portable...

So apparently I need to choose my words more carefully. I should have said one with some size, but everyone probably still would have flipped out. I am well aware of the regulations guys, I'm on the water 150 days a year. I'm the one that's been promoting catch and release all winter. But thanks for the heads up. Sorry for the confusion.

Plenty o ice!!! Had my auger down to the ice and got it wet and killed it yesterday. Luckily their was 4 of us and one the guys brought his auger.

Crappies were hot last night from hour b4 sunset till 8.

Kept 26, released around 50 more. These fish are coming in suspended 8-10' off bottom.

Smaller minnows only, then swithcing to waxies at dark.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
