The wife, kids, and I are heading up to the cabin this weekend and I hope to get out on the Lake to do some last chance Ice fishing. I have already read that I should try and make an extension b4 we come up, but what about driving on the lake. Any issues (deep snow, trails, etc.) Any body getting into the crappies.

Driving out there is pretty good. Someone was nice enough to plow some nice roads out the to main two villages on the lake. When I was out there on Friday, there was only a road plowed part way to where I wanted to go but made it with no problem going cross country. The crappies have been very off and on from my experience the past week or so. One night I will catch a limit plus, the next night I might ony get one or two. Hope that helps

I was out tonight out by Kywest's spot, and we had a great flurry of nice crappies from 5:15 to 6pm and then they got finicky. Nice gills kept everyone busy from 2pm when we got there, until the crappies moved in. Driving is not a problem, they plowed a lot of roads for the derby this past weekend.

Is there an access on the South East Side of South Lida?

I have always used the "pay a little to land your boat" spot between the two lakes.

I have usually done pretty well out there. I can usually always catch a few 13-14 inchers, obviously with some smaller ones too. The best so far this year was a really skinny 16 incher. I am pretty sure he decided to put all his energy into getting longer rather than getting some girth. All in all, most every night I have been out there I have caught a very nice limit of 12-15 inchers. I have kind of figured out what the bigger ones are looking for so I don't catch very many of the smaller ones anymore.

The only weeding is that you have to throw back all the 10.75 inch crappies because they have to be 11 or better to keep. Although I haven't had the luck Ky has, because I can't get out there as often grin.gif , I have gotten quite a few over 13 with 14.25 being my largest. I have dropped a few big ones, but I am banking on a trophy (2+lbs) by the time ice is out.

Ya know F-dog, I can't help the fact that the crappies love me. Actually when we met up out there the first time, I was on Christmas break so thats why I was able to get out there all the time. Now I only get out maybe once a week if I am lucky. the best thing I found to use out there is a small jigging spoon. Something very similar to the Lindy Frostee jigs tipped with a minnow head. The smallest Chubby Darter used to be the ticket but they kind of stopped hitting that.

kywest, throw on a JB lure rattling varmit. Minnow glow is the "color": purple and black, wtih a red throat. the back is glow green. I believe it is a 1/8 oz jig.

I've been catching the slabs on that spoon tipped with waxies, but I've caught them with minnow heads before as well. If the bite picks up later let me know, as I might have to venture out this weekend ;\)

Dead, I will definatly check that out as well.

Hitman, I have been fishing in around 27-30 feet. The smaller crappies have been sitting at or near the bottom with the larger coming in aruond 15-20 feet. I basically just went to a spot that I did well fishing in the summer and it worked out for me. I got lucky. The clay point village is where I have been going... Sticking to the edges of the village.

maybe a meet and greet and do some fishing afterwards? I'll check with Mrs DEADhead for permission, before any commital. There's a few spots Fdog and I want to try, but numbers would help us cover the area better.

don't know much about south lida except that access is difficult in the winter and that there's a lot of structure there. where are you putting in? I was hoping to go riding tomorrow but those plans fell through. Though I could always ride at the park for a bit then fish lida.... hmmmmm....

We will get on just past Stoney Bar & will be using a wheeler & my Indy to get around. Run & gun is the plan. I'm still looking for a crappie to put on the wall.

Ky, we have been using the spoons lately as well, but some days they want something smaaaaaaaaall. The red glow frostee spoon in 1/16 and 1/8 has been working. I've had the best luck with a vertical glow jig hooking a small crappie minnow under the dorsal, after dark.

Dead, if I'm not there, you won't be able to drill holes to fish out of. But I will be in Cabo San Lucas grin.gif come Sunday; I'll catch a another 130+lb striped marlin for you again. I hit that spot further south of where we were with Cliffy; only drilled holes in 2 spots and didn't mark anything so I don't know if it's worth trying. S. Lida, go to the deep hole on the south end.

thanks for the info Fdog. I was thinking of hitting that spot we talked about, but if you think it's a bust then maybe I'll try somewhere else. Maybe I'll try it again for grins and giggles. I assume you were out in daylight using similar tactics to what we were using earlier.

fdog - I'm heading up that way with my daughter on Saturday. Do I need an extension on my auger? We'll be after gills if you have a suggestion on where to go for them on Lida or other area lake I'd be grateful. Also, I see you're heading to Cabo. My gal and I are looking at heading there mid March. If you have pointers on who to contact for a charter I'd appreciate it!

Sounds like fun......too bad I cant join you guys. I am heading to LOTW for four days of running and gunning on the big pond. Yeah, its not Cabo....but it isn't bad.

I don't hire a charter; the owner of the resort I stay at is from Detroit Lakes and has his own boat. It is available for charter, but he invites me along a couple times while I'm there. The boats name is "Bad Medicine", after the lake north of DL. I would recommend looking up that boat for charter, I got a 135lb marling last year when I was up during the same time.

Fish the outer edges of the groups of houses out there, that's where I've been fishing.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
