Crappis in DL area?

Recommended Posts

the only thing biting right now is the frostbite.

There are crappies to be had but you'll need to work for them. At this time of year, people aren't just going to cough up spots that they've been working all winter to find. I'm not one to kiss and tell. whistle.gif

Many area lakes will begin to heat up as we move into spring. Most of the lakes in the area offer good crappie fishing, but like Dead said, not many people willing to offer up spots.

Come on Peter.....do you remember when you were first cutting your teeth on the DL crappie scene and the Hammer set you up?

Since I don't live there anymore, I'll kiss and tell!

1. South Lida.

2. Big and Little Detroit-Stay out after dark (find green weeds)

3. Little Cormorant-tough to tell you where since there are too many corners and nooks

4. Melissa and Sallie

5. Acorn-Weedy flat by access after dark

6. Mud lake-if it hasn't been fished out

Peter is correct, as in the spring, crappies are available in most area lakes. Wish the same was true here!

Hammer you dog, where you been? Heard the fishings hot and plentiful up your way \:o . When you coming down for a visit?

1. Never fished S. Lida

2. Little D is full of 7 inch crappies

3. Never fished Little Corm

4. Sallie is Dead Sea/Melissa coming back but early ice bite.

5. Haven't fished Acorn in 3 years, access always snowed in

6. Never fished Mud

N. Lida has been decent, fish the outskirts of the villages. Eagle has some crappies but small in size, find deep mud. Many other lakes with crappies, a guy just has to get out and try them. Tooooooooo many lakes. I don't know about any hot bite right now, it's the calm before the storm right now. I've only been on 3 lakes since January so I have limited first hand knowledge of any good bites. Dead shot bay will put out crappies as well, smaller in size, but if you want to catch fish they're there. Try near the bridge or on the west end.

Upper C can be pretty good too.

You will know where to go -- just head to where everyone else is at.

Ya, go to Upper C. Catch 15 hammer handels to one crappie. No thanks! I'll stick to better lakes.

Little C is good, find the right spots. \:\)

Mud is an excellent crappie lake. Both late ice and early soft water. It gets fished pretty hard by the locals but it still produces very well.

Last time I was out on Melissa was February 15...saw quite a few crappies on camera suspended. Never tried for them, but they were there, along with a billion small sunfish.

Has anyone tried Praire at all, yesterday we were on our way to S. Lida and at the bait shop they said that there were some people out there going after crappies. Ive never fished the lake at all before, just interested if its worth giving a try or not.

Been working the detroit lake area for crappies and wow been out 3 out of last 5 nights on big D and what luck. set up around 12:00 and fish till 7:00-8:00 at night. Any glow type hook with minnow. 18FT water. biggest so far 12.5 inch lots of 10 inch. all caught and released without the use of a flasher. Dumb luck I suppose!!!!!!

Big D has some nice crappies, for sure. The trouble is trying to locate them. Fisherdog and I have had some luck in the past...

Prairie can be pretty good for the crappies. I never used to catch limits but they can be decent size. Night bite in deeper water off the weed beds. Standard crappie tactics will work just fine. Had better luck in the spring.

I was gonna ask if he was sure if he was on Big D, little D, or deadshot bay. I haven't heard about an crappies coming out of Big D as long as I lived here. Not to many people fish it, and those that do are fishing for walleyes.

Oh, my vacation to Cabo was GREEEEEEAT, but I'm glad to be back. Dead, give me a call tomorrow morning.

Hey Cicada thanks for the info I've never been there before the bait shop where I stopped last week on my way to S. Lida said that quite a few people had been in there and got bait and said that they were headed out there. I just thought that I would try and get some feed back to see if it was worth heading out there at all.

I've been on big "D" twice this year and both times found the crappies stacked up in the same place. Nothing huge but true 10" fish were there as fast as you could get to them. Many more in Little D or in deadshot, but the crappies are indeed in Big Detroit and they seem to be untouched out there in the winter. I've not had anyone close to me while I was finding them.

I'm glad to hear that, I live right on South Shore drive with easy access to the lake and never fish it. It's a large lake and I've never taken the time to look for them. I'd love to tag along with you sometime if you don't mind the company; I'd be happy to reciprocate.

  • 2 weeks later...

Pete, where did you stay in Cabo? Angie and I were there 2 years ago. We took a 1 day charter for Marlin. Angie caught a really nice dorado.....I got sunburned.

Erickson's resort, did you get hit up hard for a timeshare? I've heard some horror stories. We stayed at a place on the opposite point of the bay called Missiones. Next to the Ristorante Da Giorgio if you ate there. No complaints. Nice clean room with a hot-tub on the balcony and a view looking right through El Arco. Did you fish on the Bad Medicine?

I did fish on the Bad Medicine, and know Chris Erickson as well. We went there last year with the intent on buying if we liked it there, and we loved Cabo and the resort. We got a great deal being that we know Chris, and you can't beat the cost per night we are locked in at, less than $100 per night. I know where you were at, but it is too far from town for us. We like the fact that we can walk down a few flights of stairs and be on the best swimming beach in Cabo, can walk a couple hundred yards to go to the Marina, the mall, or town.

I know im killing the Cabo vibe here but i figured if there was a place to put this, here it was. anyways went out around here for the first time in a couple months and WHAMMY did i find the pannies. nothing but large fish for about 5 hrs. Pulled up some 11.5 incher crappies, and a 9 or so incher. and then about 10 Sunnies, none that i brought home were less than 7 inchers. anyways, the best feeling was that i was the ONLY one out on the lake. nothing better than being the first one on the ice durring early ice, not to mention be the only one on the lake late ice when the crappies are hungry. going to go back later this week, smack a couple more. have fun and happy fishing

Ericksons got the best spot in town. We didn't stay there because I'd read on Tripadvisor.com stories of people who had a great rooms and were later moved to lousy ones after expressing no interest in their timeshares. Glad you didn't experience that. In all fairness to the Ericksons, I have never met anyone in D.L. who didn't really enjoy their stay at Cabo Villas.

Has the crappie action in the area picked up yet? I haven't been out for a week and it was pretty slow the last few times I went.
