Sorry, H2A, haven't been in the steakhouse for a few weeks.

I'm sure going to look funny out on Bside drilling 4,308 holes in a row so I can troll those cowbells. grin.gifgrin.gif

Hey Great Outdoors, thanks for the info today. It paid off well. I went to the reef you told me about that topped out at 9'

It missed one on a tip-up with a sucker. Caught one 26" on a Slender Spoon with a rainbow head on the hook in about 45'.

Good luck if you head out tomorrow.

Thanks, stf.

I was using a 32" medium action rod which was kind of a noodle for lake trout fishing so it was a good fight to get the fish through the hole.

It didn't have any clipped fins, I kept it anyways :o. I hope you aren't to bummed with me. It's lent, I needed a fish grin.gif

I really owe Mr. Maki, he gave me some good advice on a few good spots to try.

Casey,

Congrats on the trout.

Heading out early tomorrow(7-7:15) and bringing the camera to see if those are walleye that are playing around.

Let you know how I did later in the evening.

Casey, sweet fish! I'm never bummed when someone keeps a laker, and Lent has its own demands, eh? I think you're going to need another one to feed three people through Lenten Fridays, though. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Also good to hear you got some excellent info from G.O. A bait/tackle shop owner is SUPPOSED to get his customers on good fishing spots. It goes with the territory. Not trying to be hard on Maki. I know he farms out lots of good info to anglers. Well, to everyone but me, anyhow. grin.gifgrin.gif

Anyway, all that is one good reason to buy bait in the locale you're fishing. Heck, smart as they are about fishing, I doubt the bait folks in Babbitt know how to put you on Bside lakers. grin.gifgrin.gif

Nice catch Casey! One fish like that will hold a guy over till, well, the next one....

STF might get this answer to you first since he types faster, but travel aint bad. We hit it with a full size 4x4 pulling a small utility trailer. Had to back up a couple times and re-run it, but made it just fine.

Sleds will definately travel better though. The snow was a little "greasy" in the afternoon with the light melting. It'll freeze and firm up.

I started fishing at 1:30. My tip-up got a bite at 4:30. Nothing but smelt in between those two times. If my Vexilar wasn't lying it wasn't because the fish weren't biting, they just weren't around. This fish came in and was not messing around at all. It missed the lure once and then pounded it on the second attempt.

Thanks again Casey. I'm usually off the lake after 4 p.m. because in the first few years I never caught a laker after that, but I'll be changing my habits pretty quick.

Like the day after tomorrow! grin.gifgrin.gif

Don't feel too bad, today wasn't a good day for anyone I talked to.

I was in 48 FOW, too deep IMO.

Very few smelt, about 5-6 lookers, but don't know what they were.

Weather permitting, I'll be out tomorrow in about 30-35 FOW on some structure.

I missed my target today by about 50 feet.

Wanted to hit the 30 foot depth on the reef, but wasn't going to move after setting up.

Here is my weekend fishing report:

Took my soon to be 4 year-old out to High for the afternoon--got the honey-do list done and had to get out and enjoy the weather. After a very interesting ride on the wheeler in, we were fishing by 3:30. I would strongly suggest that no one take a wheeler into the lake--the ice flow on the portage between Dry and High is darn near impassible--the ice is too slippery with a 3-4' drop on the downhill side--I had to winch my entire way across the flow. A sled was be easier but I don't know if legal--the only way around is on a pioneered trail through the woods. Anyways, I digrest, Carter had a blast climbing the hills and sledding down on his butt but no takers on either my dead minnow or his waxies. At 5:30 I told him to jig his rod slightly which he tried to do. But he yelled at me that it wouldn't move--I told him to jank harder because I knew what was on the other-end. Well line started zipping off the reel and he kind of freaked yelling at me to grab his rod. I flung a 18" beautifully colored rainbow on the ice. I don't know if the rainbows spawn in that lake but the fish definitely had its spawning colors! Carter was extremely proud--he couldn't to tell his girlfriend ;\) and have her over for a trout dinner.

Sunday, I headed out to B'side. I got a slightly later start than I wanted but atleast I was fishing. Started out around Crab Creek--I had lots of smelt and one looker but nothing on the hook. At 11:30 I decided to get out and explore the lake. I stopped and hit the steep break on the northside of Crab Cr. bay. It looked like the deadsea--nothing but then out of the blue came one very hot looker but he just wouldn't hit. I stayed for another halfhour or so and then headed up to the arm. Popped some holes and scouted then I figured to head back towards the main lake, find a spot and just sit the night out. I found an awesome point off a chain of islands that I knew just had to hold fish. Nothing until 4:16--I had just looked at the watch to see how long I wanted to stay. Then WHAM, it happened...a large mark sprinting to my jigging rap. Without any hessitation, it just hammered it and screaming out line headed to the bottom. I managed to slowly get it up about halfway twice and then another run! The third time, I had it to the bottom of the hole and was able to see it. Holy s**t!!!! It was huge! And then it took off back down 60' to the bottom again. OK, lets try it a fourth time. It came up like a dead weight and I thought for certain that would be it. I got it started in the hole and I was starting to reach down to gill it, when it turned (somehow?) and the reel was screaming again. It went to the bottom and then nothing--the darn hook pulled out!!! I think everyone on the westside of the lake heard me starting to cuss!! I looked at the watch and it was 4:38--22 minute struggle of pure adreneline! It was awesome!

Sorry about the novel but it was a great weekend!

Lakerunner, those are some great fish stories. Glad to see you tied into a monster even if the monster had his way in the end. Now you've got some blood in your eye for a return trip, I'll bet. grin.gifgrin.gif

Also way cool your little boy landed that nice rainbow!

Looks like Sunday from 4 to after 5 was a good time for several anglers on Bside. Any kind of guess on the size of the one that got away?

Unfortunately not this upcoming weekend.

Saturday, I'm hosting a membership/fundraiser drive barbeque for the Eveleth Trailhawks snowmobile club--should be a lot of fun and if no one here on the forum is fishing, stop by. It'll be at the shelter by Murphy Lk Road starting at 11 and lasting until the food is gone.

Sunday, is Carter's b-day party. So unless I play hookie sometime this week or next it won't be until the weekend of 8th.

It sure wa a blast having my 34" Polar HT heavy bent in two and a couple of times well down in the hole fighting the fish!

Oh, I forgot to add that my guess was well over the 8# range and around 26"? or so. This though is just a guess based upon the lakers I used to catch back in Lk MI's Grand Traverse Bay.

Some of you guys report catching smelt while your fishing burntside...Are you literally fishing for them while you have a 2nd line out for lakers? Basic panfish jigs and euros for bait would work I assume?

Since I'm on the subject of smelt...since there's so many in burntside, would frozen smelt work better than frozen cisco?

I've actually seen stfcatfish using a #22 royal coachman with a 6X tippit. grin.gifgrin.gif In reality, the goofy things will impale themselves on a laker jig! As to frozen smelt vs ciscos? IMO I don't think it makes a difference. Live smelt on the other hand.....

That's funny, Ken. Imagine me with a flyrod on Burntside! grin.gif

JB, when I catch smelt (13 in one day was my biggest total), it's generally on laker lures tipped with a small chunk of smelt or cisco. That might be a decent sized Swedish Pimple or other spoon or a jigging rap. May seem impossible, but smelt will open their mouths up wide enough to fit all three prongs of the treble in there.

Some are snagged, but most of the ones I get are caught in the mouth.

And it's legal to use them as bait as long as I keep them on burntside, right? It doesn't matter if they're dead and frozen anyway though, does it?

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
