CK's report

Recommended Posts

The fishing has been tough as of late to find good eaters.

I've hit many lakes over the last month.

I hit Farm Island and worked that 20 fow just of off Camp Good News on the n. side of the lake.

We caught some walleyes ,but the action has been slow.

BSL has been hit or miss. There's a good 3 foot of ice out there so I've been working the whole n.end of the lake.

We picked up a few eyes, perch and crappies along the way.

The narrows has produced many small crappies with a nice mix of jumbo perch and some walleyes.

My best fishing has come from Waukenabo.

The east side has been producing many fish from aquarium size to

slabs.

Nice gills from time to time as well.

As we are sliding in March most lakes will be back to hot again.

Here's some pics from the last month.

I'll add in a few videos as well.

Nice Post, I have never fished BSL for Crappies. I hope to try it in a couple of weeks. What depth do you usually look for.

CK, you always seem to make BSL look like the best crappie lake in minnesota (makes me want to fish up there even more)...I had always heard it known as a good perch and tullibee lake...do you ever fish for them? As nice as crappies are, those other 2 fish would be my motivation for a trip up there.

If I'm able to make it, it'll be the weekend of the 22nd of march. I'm coaching a boxing tournament in the cities that night though...so the question is, am I crazy enough to fish BSL throughout the day and then do the 130 mile drive back home to make it in time for the fights? The answer...I think so.

Hmmm...I was gonna hit some bemidji/cass ice the last weekend of march and am a little iffy about that (even though I've gotten some positive feedback on the outlook of conditions).

What is the ice like on a typical winter around the first weekend of BSL?

no snow,20"ice some what honey combed for the 1st few inches....solid thereafter.

Not really.4 wheelers maybe if you can get on the ice.The access sits in direct sun which melts it away. It's not that far of a walk.

the fishin is great up there for late ice for sure, last year was the first year ever that I got on some decent open water spring crappie action in the metro and the weekend after drove up to go back to ice fishing!

Big Sandy Lake.

Walking isn't a problem...that time of year will practically be t-shirt weather anyway. Where is the access located? How many are on the lake?

I can't give up my spot.Well I have....I'm gonna make you work for it.Go look.It's late.Email me & I'll tell you .LATER

There is actually 4 public accesses not counting the resorts that you can go through. Fishing has been slow on BSL, can't wait for the late season fishing. Good luck

Nice Calico, Kieth! Maybe this spring I will head over to Big Sandy and try to find the brothers and sisters of the one you are holding! I will let you know? Right now work is a bit too hectic to plan anything other than one day at a time. (your typical NEW BOSS SYNDROME!! Lots of black coffee, Rolaids, and cigarettes!

  • 2 weeks later...

March and April. We fished up to the 16th last year.

The north side ice on the shore let out to far ,but there is an approach easment a guy can get on that is protected by shade.

The road to get to it is right across from the p r i.

It's a narrow trail that's 40 yards long ,but it's a good spot to get on the Horn.

When the ice has retreated too far, have you ever tried fishing along the ice edges in a canoe or small boat?

When it's out that far I have other smaller lakes that are open with crappies biting.

We fished several lakes the past week lots of fish in 6 to 15 fow. Most of the bigger fish we caught shallow and early in the morning. Good luck out there and be safe!!

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
