I dont think I am going to be able to make this one. My father in law is having open heart surgery next week so I need to be with the wife. I am going to try to make cool cats though.

We'll miss you Frogtosser. But we all understand. I'll keep your father in law in my thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully Cool Cats works out.

well, it's looking more and more like the nephew isn't going. Which means it's just me. I have access to a portable, FL-8, Auger, etc. I would have room for one, or I could ride with someone else if you need a partner to split expenses.

I live in Oakdale, NE corner of the metro. I have to work friday night, so I was going to head out 4 or 5 am Saturday, and comeback late sunday.

If anyone is interested get back to me.

Me and some buddies will be at URL this weekend. We are staying in one of Don and John's sleeper houses out of Roger's. It sounds like the weather will be nice this weekend and we would like to do some exploring on Saturday. I am thinking we might join up with you guys for slabfest. Hope the weather man is right!

Borch and Hanson,

Just a quick thanks for letting my son and I join you on the Scouting Trip on Saturday...we learned a lot and had a good time....we were lucky we left when we did...my knuckles are still sore from gripping the wheel all the way home to Saint Cloud! Hope the Slabfest goes well....

A fun time for sure Steeplechaser. You and Blake are hardcore as it was sure getting cold and windy in the afternoon and you both out in the open catching fish.

by the way Gander had a really sweet deal on the Strikemaster Lazer augers....strikemaster also said I could get my mag2000 repaired quixckly and reasonably....are the Lazers as reliable? I think it's the same powerhead, etc

Steeplechaser2-

Was nice to have you and your son join us. The photos I took turned out pretty good. I'll post one up tomorrow but I can also e-mail them to you as well. You can shoot me an e-mail to my e-mail addy listed below and I'll send you the photos.

The ride back to the ice shack on Saturday wasn't nearly the ordeal as the ride back on Sunday. Sunday night was white out blizzard conditions with 10' visibility tops. Cold sucker too!

In regards to your Strikemaster, I do believe they are the same powerhead. But if you can swing it, you'll sure like that Lazer auger assembly over the Mag2000 chipper blades. The auger I run is a Strikemaster Lazer Mag Xpress that I've had for 6 years now.

For those coming up to Slabfest III Friday night, better stop into Hillman's Tall Tales Bar. We should have a pretty good crew in there Friday night.

We (myself and girlfriend) are leaving St. Cloud in about 3 hours.Hope to catch up with you guys on Saturday if everything works out as planned. There will be 2 in our group. We are probably going to leave the atv's at home as it sounds like the won't be very helpful.

Steeplechaser2:

Yes they do have a great deal going right now. I just picked an 8" lazer last week for 299. It sounds like a lot of the factory installed blades are out of pitch. I tried using it and it cut way too fast at first and then would bind up at the bottom. I let the weight of the auger do the drilling and I cleared out the ice chips a time or two on the way down but it still bound up tight at the bottom. I called strikemaster on Monday and they took care of me. It sounded like this is happening to a lot of the new augers. I had new blades in the mail yesterday. So if you do buy one and you plan on brining it up to URL I would definately pick up an extra set of blades because the factory installed ones likely won't work for you.

As far as slabfest goes, looking forward to doing some fishing with you guys on Saturday!

Huh, and I just bought one yesterday...sounds like I should call Strikemaster today and get me a free set of blades:)

By the way, Duluth Gander Mountain still has a few of these augers left at this price. Heck of a deal.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
