The 3 crayfish in the upper left of the first picture look great. Do you have a pattern for them? I have been looking around for a good pattern and have yet to find one I like.

Great looking flies!

If you are willing to share the pattern recipe, would you mind posting on the Fly Pattern thread ? Thank you!

Got a new Cliff's Bugger Barn last month for my xmas present. Filled it with carp flies over the past couple weeks, tying for a few hours over several nights.

You've been a tying machine DeadHead!

Nice to see everyones flies to get new ideas rolling around. Same old's get rather stale. Some really nice boxes I'd like to get my hands on. ;\) Some really good tyers on this board.

Might post some of the musky flies I've been working on as of late. Otherwise my flies seem to pale in comparison. That's alright, still seem to catch.

Fly tying has gained momentum in the last couple weeks...the cold weather needs to go!

Marc have you started tying with the mylar/flashabou from walmart yet? Funny thing is that after I took the picture of the bugger barn, I re-org'd the flies in the box and squeezed over another dozen in there. Now it is really stuffed, though I don't have all the flies I want for carp in there tied yet. I might have to get another barn!

Not yet...got a package of christmas tree tinsel that's almost exactly like flashabou (just as flimsy), hopefully it will last. Couple ideas rolling around on how to use it, but haven't tied anything with it yet.

Mostly been tying double bunnies that run about 8 inches with flashabou, and rubber legs. Would like to add a stinger attached to the hook bend since I hear a lot of fish hit just the tail end of the fly.

yeah, the 50 lb powerpro is good material for the stinger. I would reccomend tying in a loop, like we talked about this winter, and connect the trailer hook with a friendship (loop to loop) connection. I like the ability of being able to remove the stinger hook.

you're double bunnies sound interesting, you might need to post a pic.

You might want to consider using wire if you're tying stuff specifically for the toothy (Critters)

porter the powerpro is a braid and very abrasion resistant. It is better than wire and hard mono/fluoro because it is still flexible.

Yeah when I saw those mice I was thinking of monsters of the night!

Here's some pics of the latest creations....still a few more in the works - Pulgisi Fiber baitfish flies, and epoxy heads - these are mainly just the double bunnies.

Tied doubles of each. One with 1/4 ounce weight, and the other non-weighted.

Can't wait to see what this fly looks like in the water. Basically a Deceiver pattern with a few other things mixed in.

See the need for a trailer! \:\)

If anyone is wondering, the top part of the shank is left bare so that a pliers can be used to take them out without destroying the fly.

That, and a couple less known haunts around the cities were musky are present. No launch/motorized either, so pressure is a little less...think catching one on the fly will be a little better.

Have some 3/0 foam popper/chugger/BLASTER bodies in the mail too. Can't wait to get them to tie 'em up.

Don't know if I find more enjoyment catching fish on the flies I tie, or dreaming about the possibilities.

I know what you mean. Every fish has the potential to be a monster!

We'll have to hit the Croix together this summer.

Sounds good Haad!

Made it out yesterday for a couple hours winter catch and releasing for trouts. It was good to be out, and casting again. Little rust developed over the last few months. Trout were pretty selective, and I wasn't willing to deviate from a black leech. Saw a couple midges, a stone fly, but only one aggressive rise. Would have thought it was taking a caddis.

Really looking forward to warm water flying again!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
