find a drop off near 30 FOW . Get some shiners and fatheads. Put the shiner on a tip up, and use the fatheads for jiggin. Use a pimple or something that glows and satrt jiggin. A velixar helps with the jiggin part.

Are they really that deep right now? I have always had some success in the 17-24FOW range, but never gone much deeper than that.

it can vary, but as the season goes on they seem to go deeper. Did move house from 21' to 25' and have already done better. Got away from traffic which helps.

are they right out in front of gooseberry island again

if so that would only range from 8-20 ft.

I was out this weekend and there were minimal houses out compared to last year. The bite was slow but you could stay busy because the little perch just would keep you busy. Was all over the west central part of the lake and didn't have much luck on size except for some real nice craps just outside of moose-o near a froze in tip up...hahah

my house is in 21 feet out there by gooseberry and the bite has been zero the last few weeks, moving deeper as soon as my back feels better.

Pelican is pretty slow at the present time. Seems to be a short run, maybe 30 min. from about 515p - 545p. You might pick up 1 or 2 keepers, lots of little bait stealers (6-8") before that.

After catching some eye's in 50' at the tourney last Saturday, on Sunday afternoon I tried it on Pelican, and actually caught three about 14". What a suprise I never would have thought to fish that deep... I also had a bunch of suspended fish about 30' down that would bite, but I could never hook them (tullibee?? confused.gif). Otherwise this has been a really tough winter on Pelican. Maintaining hope for February!!!

Thanks to Jason for the map and bait for the tourney; three of us went, my buddy caught a .92 Rocky, I got a .69 eye and my wife got a .27 eye that didn't make the list, and we got three really small eyes. Great day!

Heading up on the 8th. Hopefully the fishing will pick up a bit. Has everyone been abandoning the weed edges in search of roaming walleyes on the sand? I am taking a friend of mine and would like to get some action. We will be mobile if necessary, but ideally it would be better to sit, drink and catch a couple limits (not to be too greedy). Is the ice safe for SUV's? Any major cracks, especially on the east side?

Got a few keeper wallys on the south end over the weekend but it was spoty and slow. only one keeper each night and a few real small ones. unfortinatly i have not had time to fish anywhere other than the south side but from what i have experianced it has been slow all year.

I have never cought a tullibee on pelican but would like to get a few to try in my smoker. anyone have a tip as to where i can track them down? i take it they show up suspended on the vexilar then you send down a jigging spoon with a minnow head?

They move alot. Usually out in the deep holes, somewhat suspended. You can always tell its a tullibee. They shine very bright on the vexilar and they will follow the jig way up off the bottom. I usually have a separate ultra lite rig ready with a small pimple with a single hook, then I put a crappie minnow head on it or a small piece of minnow. It has to be small or they wont hit it, jig it, they like to hit it when its dropping. There awesome fighters on ultra lite. I always had best luck about 830 am after the wallys went thru.

When is the best time to hunt walleyes - we got out there about 8 last week and had one right away and then nothing...

Norbecker-I tried fishing the south side for the first time last weekend with not much success. I did catch a tullipee in 30ft of water off of Stevens point. It was 16" long. Caught it with a small orange rattle spoon. Good Luck.

Tisosy, as I said in my earlier post this year has been way off for me on Pelican. That said, AM can be the best bite at times from my experience. I usually like to start at least a half hour before sunrise. An hour before and after sunset is also normally a prime time of course.

On the tullibies, when I marked a bunch of them it was mid afternoon in about 55', they were ranging from 40' down to 20' down, I have never noticed fish move up and down so much before. They were all over, and they were nipping at my bait, I think my treble was to big. I had a tip-up 20 yards away in 14'...

I'll be trying for some eyes tomorrow after work, glad to hear temps should be decent again.

well i tried to find tullipee over the deep holes on the south end of the lake and had no luck, i moved around all over the south end, nothing. I can complaint much it was nice to get out and move around in the portable and i did C&R a fat 22" wally in my perminent on the south end.

Any advice as to what part of the lake to get a tullipee? i think next time out i will try deep holes in the middle of the lake, mid lake East of the island.

I am definately going up on Friday. I hope to get on some Eyes and then maybe pick up a pike or two. Anybody know what depth the pike are hitting at? Are tip ups working for the slimmers?

  • 2 weeks later...

Looking to close out the years hunt for toothed fish up on Pelican. Any sort of information for next weekend would be much appreciated...

How has the bite been up there recently?

Auger extension a must?

Thanks,

Don't need an extension yet. Crappie fishing has been good. Walleye fishing can be real good but tough to find keeper size consistly. Notherns have been hitting on the weedlines.

Lenny, where abouts on the Northeast side? Are you farther north than the point? I have a place on the northeast side just north of velvet beach. I was up last weekend. Only put in 4 hours but had only one walleye. On that side of the lake I would stick to the weed edges just like in the summer. 17-22 FOW. I had no luck deeper than that on the Northeast side.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
