Growing up, we used to snowmobile on the main drainage ditches running from just west of Litchfield down to Redwood Falls. If memory serves, several of of these ditches dump into the Minnesota River and can offer pristine sledding to careful observant drivers.

A bunch of us ran from new ulm to granite falls on Saturday, nice ride but snow got alittle thin by casino, all in all it was a great ride, the river is so scenic in that area, to bad alot of people are scared to run river and are missing out on some great riding , while other people sleds are sitting on there trailers were out getting miles on,

We rode from redwood falls to franklin and just one small open patch by north redwood and between morton and franklin there was a bigger open spot but there was a way around it just follow the major tracks otherwise a piece of cake should have nothing to worry about on that stretch and im sure the rest of the river is fine too.

Since there wasnt much snow on river to go sledding a few of us took our atvs on river and ran from new ulm, to highway 4, the river ice is great, if we would get a few inches of snow this week the river will be great for riding sled again, might run up to granite on Sat if we do happen to get some white stuff

The river is in the best condition that I have seen it in years We ride river alot all winter with sleds and atvs from new ulm to granite, If your going to go riding this coming weekend it will be a nice weekend and ice will still be good, if it snows thurs then we are riding sleds, and if it doesnt we are taking atvs this weekend, The river is good, just watch by sandbars as there might be a few open spots where creeks come in, but lots of area to go around them, otherwise if u ride along shore the river level has dropped so much in last 2 weeks that the ice is laying right on dirt, no water underneath after 4 or 5 days of temps in 40s thing will start to soften up , but this weekend the river will still be prime

Just got back riding on the river. Kinda crappy, some spots were nice but some spots real patchy where the wind blew the snow off the ice. I would of turned back right away but my boy rode with too so i let him have some fun anyhow.

The river will be better this weekend when it warms up a bit it will get nice after it softens up a bit, we have a group leaving new ulm, sat morning and going to run to the casino in granite again for lunch and refuel , With as poor as winter are in southern minnesota, we ride in any conditon as long as theres slide lube, I learned after 30 years of riding that if u wait for good conditions u might as well leave sled on trailor, the river will be like a groomed trail on sat. See you on da river

If you go down to highway 37 bridge then get off river u can get right to caseys its about 2 blocks off river, easy to get to. Its about 98 miles on river from the firefly casino to where we leave from in new ulm.

It takes about 4-4.5 hours to get to granite and that encludes fueling up in morton and taking a few breaks along the way, sometimes we go to dehli on trail to eat or run the cedar rock trail and then jump back on river there are so many areas to play around on, on the way, old river beds sandbars etc, also the scenery is cool between redwood and granite.

Hey guys just wondering how the river is looking. Is it good riding yet? Also is there any areas where it is opening up? Haven't rode the river in over a month! Can't take it anymore I need to get out riding. May have to get out tomorrow.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
