So its getting close to the draft.

Who do you think is going to go #1, and who do you think the viks are going to go after?

Probably McFadden as 1 or 2.

I'd like to see the Vikings draft a WR. Maybe Limas Sweed or DeSean Jackson.

I'm sure the picture will clear up a lot between now and April. I'm not even sure who all the free agents are this year.

Who's got the number 1? Miami? Glen Dorsey should go number 1, but I don't see Miami drafting defense (if they keep the pick). And with Ronnie Brown, I doubt they'd take McFadden. They need a QB but I don't foresee any college QB worthy of the top overall pick.

I hope the Vikes don't pick another WR #1. I'd rather see a pass rushing de, or shutdown cover corner. As much as I love Winfield's tackling, I think his coverage leaves something to be desired. I think Winfied might be better suited as a Bob Sanders type of safety with the run support hard hits.

I haven't looked yet to see whats available but seeing as this team is pretty much playoff ready i'd like to see them nab a top free agent reciever before the draft and address that right away. If this happens i wouldnt mind seeing them take a right tackle honestly in the first. I know its not a glaring need but its a need and safer than picking a reciever. We also need a young safety.

i hope the vikings get a solid wideout. They need to get someone that can help the offence with deep ball and outs.

Playoff ready? Mebbe so....IF they had a QB. How can you think we are playoff ready with a guy who has what, 1 career game with over 200 yards passing? Take a look at the teams in this years playoffs and their QBs. At some point, you have to not only make the defense respect your passing game (which TJack does not), but you have to excel in it. We have neither.

Here is thought that was on the news the other night. What if Denver releases Javon Walker? How would he look in purple?

How about giving our #1 pick for Chad Johnson......KFAN says Cincy is open to trade talks for Ocho-Cinco!! You can't blame T-Jack to much when he is throwing to T Williamson, B Wade, and Robert Ferguson!!! I think KFAN also stated that B Berriman form Chicago is a free agent.......With S. Rice add either of those 2 wrs or both and we have a solid offense to go with our solid defense.......

Winfield is a great tackling corner but he is horrible on coverage.....just look how we did without him in the line-up for the few games.....a shut down coverage CB would be huge for that defense!!!

I think the Vikings should take a look at what the Packers do on draft day, youngest team in the league and they are one win away from the superbowl! Not bad if I have to say so myself...

May be the Vikes should look at Mcnabb being that Philly doesn't seem to like him anymore. I'm not a Vikes fan but I think that Mcnabb would fit in over there.

Just my two cents

Theres been a ton of rumors that the Vikes might work a trade with Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald and since he is from here, he is all for it. I can't remember what all the details were, but did NE get the extra first round pick?

Yeah playoff ready, as in needing 1 or 2 pieces. They don't need much. Meaning they are right there and a piece or two puts them in the playoffs. Unlike other teams who have to revamp half their team to have a shot at the playoffs.

couldnt agree more, when johnson was qb all the passes were right there, the wr just cant catch, and although tj is progressing as a qb he is not the answere, he needs to learn from a veteran like johnson(who would make a awesome qb coach) and play second team. all this team needs is a couple guys that can catch the ball a quarterback and i think they will be awesome

The only reason they are one win away from the Super Bowl is Bret Favre, and the packers didn't even draft him. They didn't draft Grant either for that matter.

Oh yeah. To answer the original question. #1 overall will almost certainly be a D-lineman. With Parcells running the show in Miami I'd guess Long(Howies' son) will be the pick, if not it will be Dorsey from LSU or they'll trade down(unlikely). As for the Vikings I'm thinking Bowman(wr), Kelly(wr), Baker(ot), or Harvey(de). I'm Voting for Kelly because he has everything it takes to be a #1 reciever. Best in this class.

We really need to look to the future. Adding a veteran(old) qb like McNabb isn't going to help us in the long run. I don't think giving up draft choices for Johnson or someone like that is the answer. We need to draft good young players and develop them so we can be good for the long haul. Adding a few vets along the way can help but guys like McNabb, Johnson, and Walker are just stop gap. Besides these guys will are available because they are either old, injury prone, or selfish me first players. McNabb(old, injury prone), Walker(extremely injury prone) he may need surgery again plus he has a $7 million price tag, Johnson(the world revolves around him and his TD celebrations, just ask him). Draft smart, develop young players.

koonine, I believe your right and need to get a young kid in here that'll stick it out in the long run. I also think we are gonna need to get a good young core of WR. Rice is not bad and there are also a few others that are ok but we need a number One guy again. Just my opinion.

Bill Parcells will not pick McFadden with the number 1 pick! The only way he goes number 1 is if somebody trades up and that is extremely expensive in terms of draft picks they would have to give up.

You can fight all day long about where Farve ends in the record books amoung QB, but this last year, Brady was a better QB, but as far as history, Brett is by far the lead runner it in. Hes carried so many packer teams on his back, and set so many records, there is no reason not to think hes #1

I doubt Parcells will take McFadden as well, they already got Ronnie Brown, and I bet they take Dorsey out of LSU or trade down and pick Brohm QB from Louisville. But Dorsey makes sense because he is a top 3 player in this draft unless his combine workouts and interviews are terrible, and the phins defense is getting old and expensive! I was listening to PA and Dubay on KFAN the other day and the possibility of Jason Taylor the phins DE being traded and he would be a definite upgrade in our pass defense, but for what cost? 2nd/3rd rounder? Just a reminder the vikes have 2 3rd picks this year in a switch draft picks trade they did with Denver in last year's draft and so we could part with one 3rd round pick.

Also the vikes won't take a WR in the 1st round, not with this front office and coaching staff, they will take best player available especially picking at 17 instead of picking for need. (Unless the best available player at #17 is a WR then we might take him, but I highly doubt we will take a WR 1st round) Look at last year when we took Adrian, we really didn't need another running back with Chester Taylor and his career year the season prior but the vikes took AP for best player available.....and I think thats how you have to draft, look at when we drafted Moss, look at the Pats with Belicheck picking Maroney when they had Dillion, and drafting 1st round d-lineman like Wilfork, Seymour when they already had a stud d-line 5 or 6 years ago with McGinest, Sam Adams, etc.

Look for us to trade or go out and sign a #1 WR in this years Free agency, Bernard Berriman, DJ Hackett, and maybe Fitzgerald! But what this team needs is a good recieving TE (kid out of Missouri "Rucker" he had a good year and looked good in his bowl game, might be a possible draft pick for us), WR's (cuz Williamson, Ferguson are gonna be gone) depth at D-line, depth at corner, and good back up center for Birk cuz he is getting old.

ok it's solved,

Pick up Chad Johnson asap. Then go after Mcnabb, and draft a pass rushing DE.

I would take any one of those senarios!

Does anyone need a top pick and a good RB that can get you 3 yards everyime?

Berrian and Hackett aren't really number 1 recievers and will likely be way overpriced considering there aren't many quality recievers in this years free agent class.

Fitz would look good in purple.

Ocho Cinco please noooooooo! This guy is so egocentric it defies belief. He's an amazing talent but a completely self absorbed child.

AP wasn't a best player available pick in the traditional sense of that term. He was the best player available in the draft period!

I still don't believe Dorsey will go Number 1 to Miami because he doesn't fit the scheme that Parcells like to run. Parcells may not be the "coach" but he'll be the COACH.

Go to footballsfuture and you'll learn a lot more than you will from KFAN.

If we go bpa in the first round it should be best wr,de, or cb in that order. No safeties in the first round though unless it's Ed Reeds clone.

It will be fun to see how it all plays out in April. This topic makes these cold, boring Jan. nights a little more bearable.

Who else has an opinion on this exact science of the NFL draft?

I completely agree with drafting Rucker! Third round?

Not gonna happen 10,000 casts, Cinci already stated that they won't trade Chad Johnson and McNabb isnt what this team needs, if the Ravens cut McNair then I could see us going after him hard in Free Agency as a backup and probable starter.

Koonie thanks for website info, I'll go check it out, I just listen to KFAN cuz its really the only sports talk shows that talk about minnesota sports, unlike the 660 the "Bear" in St. Cloud with all the ESPN knuckleheads. I know Berrian or Hackett aren't #1 WR's in this league but like you said with lack of quality WR available in this year's free agency, who do you go after? Javon Walker ahh no, Berrian will prolly get franchise tagged or some outragous offer to stay with the Bears, same goes for Hackett, bump from above, Fitz would look good in purple or even Boldin...(and I think one of them has to go in Arizona), oh and can't forget Donte Stallworth will prolly be a FA as well, and possibly Roy Williams from DET.

I just don't want the vikes to make the same mistake like they did taking Williamson for a WR in the 1st round..look at Calvin Johnson for the Lions and he didn't have that great of a year or Mike Williams who is playing where now a days? I guess if there is a D'wayne Bowe type WR at #17, then I wouldn't be so negative about drafting a WR 1st round, and take a player of that caliber.

I would have to disagree about drafting bpa in the 1st round and limiting ourselves to just the DE, WR, or CB positions, and just look for overall best talented player period no matter the position @ #17 to make our team better, and I will give ya Koonie not taking a kicker or punter 1st round! Because this team has alot of needs still, they are close to being a playoff team but I'm frankly just sick of being considered a playoff team contender and want us to strive towards a superbowl championship, not settle for just playoffs, look at the G-men this year and the vikes blew them out!

Almost time but maybe not quite... Although I did get the yak out of the backyard today, on to the trailer and up front to spend some time prepping it for time on the water soon.  Indeed it was fun getting out with you and the gang a few times this winter and looking forward to the next outings whenever they may be. WIll share what worked for me and look forward to reading some more info from others. Panfish is what I love going after and I had great fishing with gold jigs almost all winter. Did use a few other colors that worked also but that gold was hard to not use. Tear drop style tungsten in and 4 mm from Widowmaker Lures. Tried some from sportsmens direct also the last couple outings and liked them also. For plastics, the wishbone was good and also impulse mayflies and slug bugs. Tried and bought too many different things to try... LOL. Fished with shrimp for the first time ever this winter and that was a challenge and fun to try something different.  Started out with my good old ultralight gander mountain rods with the frabil titanium spring bobber and then bought a couple of the TUCR Inferno with the orange tip. I really like them for the 4mm and prefer the old ganders with a 3mm. Won a custom 32 inch power noodle from Kichler Custom Rods in Elk River at an event in Wisconsin and used it a few times yesterday. Very nice and looking forward to playing with it more. CGI inline reels still doing their job fine and I did grab one of the new Descent inlines and it worked sweet also. Nice that it now has a pop off spool instead of the gold screw off knob. 10 1/4 was my biggest gill and 14 for the crappie. Even went after catfish 3 times. Saw my first catfish tornado on the vex and iced a lot of fish after being taught how to use a bobber right for those super light biters. thx RickG   My highlight of the winter was getting a PB northern on a tip up up on Mille Lacs with stick in the mud. Fun City! My good old FL 18 is still working dandy and although I am tempted to upgrade, not sure if I will. Nills 6 inch saved my back from the hassles of the gas and when I put the Milwaukee on it life got even better. All in all a fantastic winter fishing with great guys and learning how to be a better fisherman.   Fish On!

Well monstermoose78 is done ice fishing around here for the year. Why you ask I fell through yes there was 28-30 inches of ice on the lake, but the shoreline nope. Went fishing with @Cret Jigs and we had fun fishing. I cut lots of holes and we got some good ones for the knife. Cret jigs brought a plank for the way out but on the way in I did not make it to the plank. Cret jigs helped me get my stuff the shore and out. I worry about the guy on the wheeler and they guy who used the plank to get out too. Thanks Cret jigs for a fun day.

To all you guys who’ve been keeping us posted, thank you. I’m an islander so I don’t have much hope for the opener, but I’ve been reading all the posts (read them year around), including entertaining posts on new gear, and, again, thanks for letting a lot of guys know what’s going on there. The current weather, forecast and web cams, give me hope! I’m thinking I may get back home in three weeks, maybe four. Keep the sun shining, Dick

What a difference a day makes, yesterday the dam was locked up tight and today it's roaring. Walleye should be running this week...
    • IceHawk
Well this morning was officially the end of the ice season for me.   Its been a lot of days on the ice this winter and I have to admit I'm  a little burnt out.   It wasn't easy but it was time to end it.  Have to admit It was a sad moment putting the gear away but it was time as needed space today to put the boat in the garage   Learned a lot of new water and reacquainted myself with some old standbys. Fished 10 different counties this winter so definitely fished a lot of different areas.  Fished many species on the ice this winter so there never was a dull moment. Didn't take a ton of pics just a few need to take more just have never been a pic type of guy LOL.   Iced 7 walleyes between 26-28 3/4 all on local lakes.  So just a tip if you dedicate some time locally big eyes can be found. Fished panfish everywhere in the state highlight area for big fish being Becker and Ottertail Douglas counties. Biggest gill this winter was 10 3/4    many 10's came topside but couldn't break 11 this winter. Craps 15 inchers were tops. Good fish but had goals set at a 16.  Some things learned this ice season where number one lure for the eyes was a old school hammered silver Swedish pimple. It far out produced anything else.   Kenders tungsten where my mainstay for gills and crappies. The plastics of choice were power bait wishbones,  chigger frys, and Northland impulse mayfly's.  The catfish were a hoot and a  change of pace did well on Maynards slammers Glow red. The equipment and gear I was running and never failed me all season were Thorne Bros Rods- For eyes Perch sweethearts. For the Panfish I was running  Power Noodles, panfish sweethearts,  and my favorite the Tripwire. Reels Pflueger Presidents, Prestige ,and Supremes.. Did use some inlines also from 13 fishing The free falls where worth every penny. Ran a K-Drill 8 inch early and late and During the thick ice Ran my strikemaste Lazer.  Vexilar Electronics the old trusty FL18 my eyes underwater, Please Don't  think that I'm pushing these products because I'm sponsored by them, I'm Not. Just want to give a thumbs up and honest opinion on  some top notch equipment that has worked and weathered the storm of a good hardwater season. Realize we all work hard for our dollars and I can honestly say these products where worth every penny and never let me down!  Well Off to the Garage to start getting the boat ready for the Next season  By the Way big Shout out to some of the best Anglers I had the chance to share the ice with this season from FM.  Thanks  Borch,  Bass Thumb,  Moose,  Eyeguy, Rick G , Tom Sawyer for shareing some ice time with me.  Hopefully I get to meet and fish with a few other FMer's this summer or next hardwater.  We had some great Times great laughs and managed to even ice a few fish   Looking forward to having a few summer outings in the future.  BYE BYE Ice Hello open water

I was out on Vermilion fishing today again. Big bay still has about the same amount of ice but the ice is a lot softer now! Small patches of 4" to 6" deep slush pockets on it. Pike bay seemed solid when we went out but when we returned almost the entire bay had about 6" of very soft slushy ice on top! That will be my last trip out this winter. Talked to one Native that I saw checking a  net that he had  out under the ice in Pike Bay. He had caught around 15 walleyes and a pike today and 8 or so walleyes yesterday. Tough way to catch fish! Cliff

Well the Pike River Dam is finally running at full throttle.  For those of you who aren't up here to see it for yourself, you can see it here: https://www.everettbaylodge.com/lake-vermilion-ice-out-2018-the-dam-is-running/
