Soft Water Tournaments

Recommended Posts

I know we are in the middle of ice fishing season but I thought that I would start a discussion about some tournaments for this summer. I know a few sportsman’s clubs around the area have club tournaments and SW fishing club had a large tournament on Sarah last year. Is anyone interested in a tournament series on the local lakes in SW MN?

Maybe one tourney a month? Starting around opener? Any ideas………………….

I think the guys that ran the Sarah tournament are well equipped to start up a tournament series..

I think there is an intrest in a tournamanet series down here in SW MN. If anyone is interested in joining forces to set it up please let me know. If we could get a few local sporting goods and bait shop onboard I think we may have some good turnouts. My email is [email protected].

I'd be glad to help out. Just let me know what you would need. How about a father/daughter, father/son tourney thrown in there once in awhile.

That's an awesome idea!!!

Hopefully, once things thaw a bit and I can get to my boat (it's buried under snow) I can get it fixed to fish some tournaments this year.

Yep...I think that'd be great to get something like that going. I would definately be interested in fishing in it & if there is anything I can do to help out gimme a shout. Lake Shetek has thier tournement the week after opener & always have a good turn out. It'd be fun to have something like that to look forward to on a monthly basis.

We should put something together, maybe get together with any of the local sportsman/fishing clubs. Not sure what the permit process entails or what kind of fees are required? Maybe have 4 or 5 tourneys. Sarah, Shetek, Round, Okabena, Big Stone, LQP, Benton, Fish, any of these lakes would be fun.

Let's set a date and location to meet and set this up. Would Worthington be the best location???? How about a date... maybe the 23rd of Feb. Any locals know a good meeting place?

I think it would be a good idea if we can get the guys that run the existing tournaments (Benton LIFE, SW Fishing Club, Shetek, ect....) onboard too!

Hey idratherbefishing, if you need a partner for one or two of these, let me know, although I'll trailer my boat for a spare this time, so we don't have to wake everyone up at 5 am on a sunday, lol Let me know asap when that tourney is that we fished last year, I definately want to make that one an annual thing. Plus I figure the way everything went that day it can only add to the book of the trials and tribulations that our fishing excursions have brought to us.

I ran the SW/MN fishing League over the past 3 years and am no longer running it due to insurance and DNR fees. I would be interested in giving you information or the format that I used if someone is interested in starting something?? It was a great time and besides learning the local lakes you get to meet a lot of great people. The lakes that we fished focused more around the Marshall area. If someone is interested in more information you can e-mail me at [email protected]

WOW!! Did your SS idontgiveashoot even have a Dedpthfinder in it.

How did you know were the transition areas were. You know like between the mud and the sand or maybe the rocks and the gravel.

Maybe thats why Bigeye30 caught that fish in his avatar.

By the way Bigeye why are you trying to rip the head off that fish. lol

lol. ha ha

Depth Finder who needs that, we just stuck the oar over the side every once in awhile, if we couldn't reach bottom we new it was over 4 feet, lol Jk. That fish in my avator was just caught recently, I don't see anything wrong with that hold, lol

I was thinking we could tag on to the the existing tournaments already being held. Maybe we could keep a running a tally and crown a winner at the end of the season.... I think the tourny on Shetek will be on the 17th of May and the Lake Benton L.I.F.E tourny would be on June 28th. Anyone know of any other tournamanets planned?

Any other ideas?

Is the life tourney on June 28th?

I came home for this last year. It was fun, but I really wish they would run it more as a tourney rather than a derby. The fishing hours were from 8:00-1:00 and no hardware. They could get so many more teams to sign up if they would change a few things around. Last year only 29 signed up.

It's a tournament they hold on big stone. I think it's the weekend after the border water opener. Last year was the first. It was a good time.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
