I'm looking for suggestions on a lake at least an hour outside the twin cities for walleyes. Something with some cabins on it. But here is the catch. Something other than the really well known ones(Mille Lacs, Leech, Lake of the Woods, Winnie, Gull, etc.) Any help would be much appreciated.

What about Kabetogama? The walleye fishing on that lake is outstanding and there are cabins. This may also fall under the lakes you listed.

It as far a Kabetogema but I need to mention it anyway. Lake Vermilion. There isn't a better numbers lakes in the tate in my opinion.

THere is a lot of great lakes around brainerd & alexandria that are smaller and still have great walleye populations

Otter Tail, Big Pine-both in Ottertail county.

Reno, Miltona, Mary in the Alex area.

Vermilion (210 miles from St Paul, 3 hours if you drive straight through)

Red Wing/Pepin on Mississippi

Check out the DNR reports for Otter Tail and Big Pine. These are deep, clear, sandy lakes that are easy to fish. Big Pine has a new slot which should make for Mille Lacs type size in a couple of years.

Nobody's mentioned URL.
The walleye fishing up there is all C&R but it's fantastic ! BIG, beautiful, healthy fish !
I caught a 29" last winter.
Plus there's the added bonus of slab crappies and some of the best and biggest pike fishing in the state !

Going west on 55 you have Clearwater by Annandale and Rice and Koronis by Paynesville and Minnewaska and Reno in and near Glenwood.

I would highly reccommend Green Lake in Isanti County. Lots of walleyes in there. Some nice pike also. Both species are easily caught and decent sizes as well. I think it is one of the best lakes within a reasonable drive. The crowds have probably gotten much smaller now than during the opening weekend.

Twitter,

URL is closed to walleye fishing period!! Even C&R. If you caught some by accident and released them thats fine. But you can't fish for them on purpose and the release them!! Your taking a risk doing that and dont steer others in that direction please. Read the regulations..

I'm with Dave as far as OtterTail goes; I was up there the 1st 3 weekends and caught a total of around 45 eyes myself. I would definately call and see if the mayfly hatch has occured because the fishing slows down quite a bit during it through 1-2 weeks after it.

I thought of that one too. Maybe something not quite so far. Thanks though!

Did somebody say Otter Tail?

Fishing has been real good. Know that the DNR rates it high and dumps more money into it for walleye than any other.

Mayfly's have not hatched yet, or at least haven't been a factor yet. They usually only last 3-4 days and change the way you fish for 5-6. (Switch to short blown night crawlers and see almost better action during the hatch than after.)
