I see Larry's Bait Shop is closed or closing soon. I'm in the North East Metro. They serviced my reels for years. Is there someone else in the area that does this well?
They also had tubs of 100 was worms. Does someone else in the area sell them in these amounts?
Thanks!

I think the service at Larry's was due to the poor old guy just being burnt out and ready to retire more then him being rude in any way. I never new how the place stayed open. There was never a sole in there when I went to get bait and he did not merhandise anything.

never liked the service i got from that place, usually very rude and poor quality bait. maybe that is why they are closing. dirk at gimps has bulk waxies.

That old guy has been that way for at least 25 years. Always counting out minnows and always a grump.

Years ago the entire buliding was just Larry's Live Bait. I remember going there as a kid and it was more like a sporting goods store with bait. I think they found out they could make more money and work less if they leased out space. Old Jack probably ran the bait shop/motor repair for tax reasons. I'm sure it was a loser every year. You guys must of stopped by on a bad day. Where else can you get 3 to 4 dozen crappie minnows for a buck. I always bought my bait there and never had any problems. I hate to see it go.

Mr. Pike1
Silver Lake Market carries crawlers and grubs, but no minnows. Joe's will be opening this fall. I wonder if they'll still carry bait?

Metro, I do see that Joe's is opening soon. I hope they carry bait. There is a Gander in the mall but for some reason they do not sell any live bait like some of the others. I have been going to White Bear to get bait as I know of no other spots.

- I will miss Larry's as well as he did sell minnows for a buck a dozen and had the 100 count waxies for ice fishing. I am sure he did make money by leasing the buildings and a nice write of for a business loss.

The company I work for bid on the HVAC system for the new Joe's and I took a look at the plans. They will continue to carry live bait.

Jack's a great guy, you just needed to talk to him for a few minutes. I will miss Larry's.
Blue Ribbon is good but has been going down hill in the last couple of years. Mike does sell bulk waxies at Blue Ribbon.
I don't understand why all these bait shops going out of bussiness at the same time as more and more people are fishing.

Have a good one!

I quit going to Larry's in the late '70's.

The old timer ALWAYS treated me like he was doing me a big favor by selling me bait. He used to count the crappie minnows! Remember he was the only gig around so he had the market cornered for us in NSP Grumpy or not. He NEVER gave me a tip either:-(! Just like Mikes minnow counter in FL. 2 bait shops that don't get my business.

Since then I was glad when Jack's opened in NSP then moved to Blue Ribbon. They ALWAYS treated me right. Now I use Brothers Bait in Stillwater. They've always treated me right too and you can get some good info out of both of them.

I give anybody gredit that can keep a bait shop going throughout the years. It's got to be lean around ice up and ice out. Then you have Fleet, Gander, Galyons, Basspro, Cabela's who can usually beat bait shop prices. Don't forget to pick up a lure every once in awhile from the little guy's even though it's not the cheapest. It might keep them around when you need minnows!

Where is Gimps?

Posted

Blue ribbon has even started to become somewhat like larry's. there is always some little kid working who knows nothing and has no idea who the "regulars" are and they usually don't have any tips worth listening to, and their prices are becoming very high. i usually go out of my way to hit Gimp's, dirk is a great guy and he really treats people good and appreciates the business.

Gimps is located on Rice Street about one block north of Maryland Avenue.

No doubt! i just wish it wasn't so far out of the way. unless you live near there it is not really on the way to any major water. Yet i will usually go out of my way to go there.

Dirk at Gimps is the man. He used to own little bear in WBL. Sucked when he moved. He used to let me hand pick my shiners, always let me know where they were biting and would do magic tricks for the kids. Great guy!!

Barely had time and data to post a few random daily pics!  😄   Iffen you’re self banned, how’d ya know? 😉   Sunday - Tuesday hunt near Yankton, SD.  We found ourselves there between two of the big pushes north.  Adults first, pushing the ice line north, slipped through a couple days before we got there and the second juvie push held up by the storm that went through the night we traveled.  Our best day was Monday.  Sunny and warm with a nice south wind.  Day 3 was cool with a stiff northeast wind bringing in another storm.     A select few groups did well with birds coming off Lewis and Clark lake but we weren’t in their path.  We packed up early and hit the road.  We headed north and found them between Brookings and Watertown.  Saw 100’s of thousands at the ice line.

Crazy, about 50 Robin's hit our yard!  Not sure what their eating but none are in any of the neighbors yards around us?  Had to cut video down so it would run.  20250319_175454.mp4
