Cool Cats 2008

Recommended Posts

I agree with the Channels also being suspended. One trip this winter the water column lite up like a christmas tree with cats. One could pick the one they wanted to try and catch. This was a very good day of cattin. Anywhere from the bottom too 6 ft below the ice. They would come through suspended all over.

There are plenty of places w/ bait between 94 and Horseshoe. I would check the 3 gas stations in Cold Spring before you head into Richmond. There is the SA and the station across the street. Also the one before you get to the river.

On a side note: I don't think I will be able to make it.

We stopped at a few of those gas stations with bait 2 years ago and the problem we had was they all stopped caring fatheads and suckers when the season closed. They did have crappie minnows. Mike's in Eden Vally will have some for sure.

Metro Joe, good point.

I have a bag full of frozen med. suckers from last summer in my freezer. I might think about bringing them.

Dtro,

It sounds like the table thing is cleared up, but let me know if things fall threw. I have 3'x6' folding table we used at last weekends FM Kids event.

You bring up a good point too. There is really no reason to wait to buy bait. You could buy it now and cut it up and freeze it.

The bait shops around Cold Spring and Richmond still had plenty of fatheads on hand as of Sunday. Richmond Marine and Southside Gas in Richmond also have minnows for those of you driving into Richmond first. Try to support the area businesses if you can.

On a sidenote, I don't think I'll be able to attend this year's event either.

I think I will be able to make it up this weekend, I am already pumped. I can't seem to find a buddy that isn't busy so I will be alone (probably do better not having to babysit them anyway LOL) Hope to meet some of the people from the forums there. On a side note if you need anyone to come early to help with drilling holes let me know, I got a new auger this year and i love to hear it run. Also if I can do anything else to help let me know.

Metrojoe,

You can cut them up when they are frozen out on the ice. I think they cut better frozen anyways, less mess. Being a year round cat fisherman, you should see the things I freeze. I might even have some frozen bullies from last summer.

Oh! Anyone want to try a frozen cow eye and the sock behind it? Huh, huh! Being a cat fisherman I still have some from last year. grin.gif If things are slow, we can fry that up in the pan. They say over sea's they taste good.

Ok a few things.

1. My license says that it expires on Feb 29, so I need to buy a new one I think. I swore I saw something about new rules. Anyways if you need a new license buy one as the CO up there is active (good thing) and may stop by for a visit.

2. As mentioned previously, we are taking advantage of a great resource up there, so let's try to pay it back by supporting any local establishments.

3. This shouldn't be an issue, but let's make sure we left the lake as we found it, or even in better shape. Respect the lake and surrounding area as if it was in your backyard.

Thanks and let's have some fun!

Shack, if it's a pain to drag along, leave it. Otherwise if it's not a problem I'm sure we could use another one.

'07 licenses are now good thru April 30th.

I'm still planning on making it to CoolCats, but I'm not 100% sure if I'll be able to. I got big shiners in the bait tank I'd like to cut and use up too. They aren't gonna do me any good down here.

I will be bringing 3 or 4 bags of frozen minnows I picked up earlier this winter from a bait shop in Cold Spring. The table I have is at least 6 feet long, maybe 8 feet.Wouldn't hurt to have another table there, though.

If anyone is looking to maybe ride up with a guy from the Metro area, particularly the east or southeast metro, please post here as I just talked to Shamu and his partner will not be able to make it.

I stopped at the SA on tuesday and picked up some fatheads. I talked to the employee there that their business should see a pretty good up-swing on Sat.. Hope he took it to heart.

I didn't mark much on the vex but I was probably in the wrong spot.

I'll be out there with the family and a few friends.

Looking forward to meeting many of you. I'm hoping to be on the ice between 6 and 6:30. Probably be by myself so will just bring the clam 2000 with a red Ranger next to it, just ask for help setting up if needed. Hope the cats are cooperating!

How much room does Shamu need for gear. I've got an open seat, but room for a lot of gear could be a problem. How far south?

I think he's looking for someone to ride up with him. He's got plenty of room for gear ;\) He'd probably be coming right by you Joe.

Oh, I thought he was looking for a ride. It doesn't sound like it would work out. I'm coming up with my 2 older boys so we have a Tahoe loaded full of gear. I was thinking if it was just one guy looking for a ride I could make some room.

I'll be driving up from Le Sueur with my 8 year old daughter if someone along the way is looking for a ride. I'm probably only bringing the clam since the brother in law wants to use the big house. Hopefully I can bother one of you guys to punch some holes for us since the big auger is in the other house. It will be nice to meet some of the area anglers.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
