Cool Cats 2008

Recommended Posts

I haven't fished that lake in a few years for cats, through ice or open water, I'll definitely be planning on attending.

aanderud,

I figured what “the hey”.

I had to dip into my summer line up of new cat rods and reels fund to purchase it, but I feel I made a wise choice. What I did was I gathered and reviewed a lot of iced cat images from Hanson, Dtro, Tom H and others, to find what they all had in common. It was the MarCum. I know some get lucky (LOL), but I think good electronics is the key to getting the fish on the line and up the hole.

I hope to see ya again, I will be their.

Well the wife switched her schedule around and it looks like I'll be there. I'm hoping to convince my 2 boys to come out with me.

Is the dawn bite still the best bet or are they going all day?

Also wanted to point out that the smaller gas station/bait shops stop carrying the bigger minnows after the season closes. (something we found out at the last Cool Cats event)We ended up going to Mike's Bait and Tackle in Eden Vally.

I would say the best fishing will be from 8-noon.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

We will meet up this summer or we can get together on the Minnesota and do a night of flathead fishing a few times this summer.

Anytime you would like to go out, you know my e-mail address.

So am I going to be able to find fatheads or shiners in the st cloud area before i come down?

I wouldn't count on finding any shiners around here then. You might get some fatheads. Best bet would probably be the baitshop right in Richmond. Cut up smelt work well too because they are more oily, and you can get them at many grocery stores.

Cory, I know there is a bait shop right in Richmond that I've stopped at a couple of times.

I know a local grocery store that normally has smelt i will stop in . The next question is how many people are normally at this event so I know how much to make for the potluck. I am thinking about trying a new recipe that sounds awesome. Can't wait to try this, I have caught just about every kind of fish you can in the winter except for cats.

Southside and Richmond marine are your best bets for bait locally.

I've never even caught a catfish, but if I'm able to find someone down here in the Metro to make the drive with, I'll probably show up. I'll hopefully get to put some hours on a new Marcum that I'll be picking up today. This event is on my birthday! \:D

You can't clean cats on the ice unless you are preparing them for cooking. Only 1 fish over 24 inches is allowed.

From the DNR web site: "While on or fishing waters with size restrictions, all fish for which the size restriction applies must have their heads, tails, fins, and skin intact and be measurable. A person may prepare and use the fish for a meal while docked or moored to shore, or while on the ice. Fish prepared and used for a meal still count towards the daily possession limit."

Something I could really use is a folding table or two for the food out there. If anyone has one they could bring along I would greatly appreciate it.

I talked to someone at Mike's bait in Eden Vally and they said they would have fatheads for sure and were positive they'd still have suckers this weekend.

Unfortunately the last time I was cat fishing through the ice was 2 years ago at the last cool cats event. I really can't recall if we were pulling these cats right off the bottom or if they were suspended. If my memory serves me, we were fishing anywhere from 5 to 10 feet off the bottom.

Metro- many times they are suspended... but also can be found near the bottom.. I equate it to fishing crappies.. But bigger!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
