Was out on Spring Monday. The small Walleyes seem to be plentiful, but all are really small. Was just curious if other were finding the same thing?

Posted

they have all been small. same size as last year. maybe they just dont get any bigger and they all stay the same size. i got one about 15in and one around 24in last year - plus about 200 under 11in. this year so far the biggest ran just under 12in. they are there somewhere but not around all the little ones.

There are a LOT of small walleyes in Spring, but the bigger ones are there, catching 'em is another story. My best luck has been to troll with Rapalas 1/2 hr. before dark. Crappies are also very numerous, but tend to run on the smaller side. Bobber fishing with crappie minnows in the shallows works well in the spring, and jigging with small white jigs tipped with a small yellow mister twister when the water warms up and the crappies are deeper (+/- 20 ft)seems to work well for me. My larges walleye on Spring was 20 inches (caught last year). I am actually thinking of heading out tomorrow morning to give it a try. I will be in a red/white Lund Tyee with a white 110 Johnson on the back. If you are out, stop by and say hi!

Posted

Been out twice so far tons of small walleyes and the crappies are smaller than in the past, but lots of action. Did catch the biggest crappie i've ever caught south of the cities last weekend 2.5# on spring with a crawler.

I'll be out on Prior several times this weekend if anyones interested in sharing a beer or three. I gotta work on conditioning so I don't get bass elbow.

I'll be on prior this weekend too, I'm in a 14' blue aluminum boat with a 20 horse johnson. My wife might be with, if not my 10 week chocolate lab pup will be in the boat. If you see me say hi, I'll have a couple cold ones with too.
(look for the Mopar stickers on the boat.)

Got room for a few in my boat. It's rated for seven (of course fishing might not be that easy with seven). Gotta get on the water for something tonight. Would be nice not to be out by myself.........I'd be so lonely. Will somebody be my friend???

OK if I actually sounded that pathetic I'd kick my own A55!!!!

Give me a call on my cell to discuss the arrangements. I might just head out and meet you guys on the water if ya already got a full boat.

Let me know ASAP cause I leave work at 3:45 or so.

WWG

I would go but I am fishing Thursday and Friday and the wifey isn't too thrilled with that. Maybe next week if your going. I am more than willing to chip in for gas and crap. Good luck. I met mtreno this winter on cedar. He is a good guy but he is one of those people who doesn't appreciate the fine art of bass huntin'. Just kidding. Ya gotta respect a fish that would hit a cigarette butt if it was invading its territory. However I am starting to develop an addiction for walters. They hit hard and fight pretty well. Plus they taste a little better than bucketmouths. But you can't beat bass action in my opinion. Good fishin to all. Hope you find someone to join ya WWG.

Caught a lot of small bass last night. I was throwing a Zara Spook for the heck of it. Could of thrown different baits if I was looking for bigger fish, but I was having so much fun catching the little guys on topwater.

mtreno and his roomate were out looking for eyes and hadn't had much luck by the time I left the lake. Did you have any better luck after I left??

wastewater - sorry i missed your post yesterday. got your cell # entered in mine now so next time i will just give you a call. we ended up with nothing. graph came alive after dark but no takers. a few small biters but i think they were all small. tried leaches, fatheads, and shiners and nothing seemed to work. we stayed out till about 11. great time on the water - nice when the weather is a bit grey to keep the fair weather boaters off the water. first channel had the most on the graph - fished by the second channel and marked nothing (two other boats there and they got nothing) and fishing on the edge of the big hole where you were bass fishing nothing on the bottom. did mark some big groups of fish about 8ft down in about 22ft of water. maybe thats where all the bigger bass went last night.
lets plan a day to hit that pike spot you have been talking about. have not had my canoe/duck boat out yet this year and seems like thats the kind of boat we would need.

Jeff - hey have not seen you around here much. how has tonka area been? just fyi i dont mind bass fishin i just find the eyes more fun to hunt down. plus they sure do taste good! yum yum

mtreno,

Hows Sunday morning sound for some pike action??

Hope you got a big canoe. With you and I in it........throwing pike lures........I'll wear my swim trunks. grin.gif

Anybody out on Prior last night?? The water was glass at dusk.....beautiful.

Posted

hmmn? I'm open this coming Sunday... Canoe? Hmmn... my boat I suppose can get into a little shallower water, espically if one were to use the trolling motor rather than the outboard (as I have a Long Shaft..) But why would one want a Canoe on Prior? Or are you guys talking about fishin a lake that doesn't have a launch on it?

Posted

I was on prior last night, killing the bass with a 6" Storm Rattling worm, pumpking color. the smallest bass was just under 2 pounds. WWG, were you fishing in Paradise bay and in Boudins bay throwing scum frogs?
I might be back out on the lake sunday eve., but i have a busy weekend. Good luck to all fishing this weekend.

Yes. No motors. Exploration. Adventure. Canoe Tipping. Mosquitos. Swamp. Leeches on your *****.

Just the way I like it!!! grin.gif

Lauger, Can't divulge locations this week due to FM Metor LETS tournament on Prior on the 15th. Gotta keep my spots to myself till after that. Carwlerman/Lauger Let me know about Sunday....I may be able to get out depending on whether I get out with mtreno in the morning.

WWG - Sunday mornin sounds ok. trying to talk the girlfriend into a weekend of muskie fishing on mille lacs but its not working to well. if the long shot pulls out i will let you know but i think it sounds safe to plan on sunday. the canoe is a bit tippy but we have had two guys, two labs, and duck decoys in there and did not go for a swim. of course there was no monster gator pulling the boat around the lake. ya the swim trunks may not be a bad idea. i will make sure the boat is water ready and find the motor - you bring the bug sprey and we should be good.

Sounds good. I only live a hop-skip-jump from the place so maybe just meet me at my house in the morning. I think minimum tackle is one rod for artificials and one for bobber and live suckers/shiners. Some string for tying crap to the canoe and some boots cuz the shoreline aint too firm. Could be ugly, but I think it's gonna pay off for us. There's an island we could beach on and bobber fish. Bring some weedless gear too....scum frogs, etc.

I can hear the toilet flush even now.

Kaaaawwooooooooooshhhhhhh!!!!!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz goes the drag!!!!

Kerplunk! goes my butt into the drink trying to haul in a hawg.

Crack! goes another cold one.

Life is good grin.gifgrin.gif

It's kind of sad. The two lakes I loved the most in this state are Mille Lacs and Burntside.  And I think we broke them both!  😕
    • JerkinLips
Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.
    • SkunkedAgain
Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.
