adamolson7,

I ment I have no reports as of right now and wishing I could be out getting reports at that time. I like this lake and can not wait to hit it in the next month. The frown.gif was for me being sad, stuck at home and not fishing. grin.gif

Life is pretty rough, when one is not fishing.

Welcome to FM. cool.gif

Was out on Independence today, there were loads of sleds and wheelers racing around. Fished for about 3 hrs 13 - 20FOW, only caught 24 Perch, and 3 walleyes (very small eyes) The ice was approx 8" thick with 2" of it being frozen slush. There looked to be some broken up ice just Northwest of the park launch. Being that I had to manually pull my Fish Trap Voyager I can tell you it's a brutal walk with all the snow on the ice.

Good Luck,

Bigminnow

I have been out on Independence a couple of times this year, and have been catching mostly Perch and the ocasional eye. Is anyone having decent luck with the crappies? I have punched holes in 10 - 30 ft looking for them but haven't seen a single one. In the DNR report it shows there are suppose to be a number of them in the lake , i am just looking for someone to confirm they had some luck with the crappies.

thx

bigminnow, I used to fish Indy alot, in both summer and winter, I lived in Plymouth for 26 years and it was a favorite lake of mine, during the winter months find a spot that has deep water, 30-50' is not to deep, the crappie will be suspended in these areas, NIGHT BITE WAS BEST, they will come through again, again and again. Good luck, and hang in there once you find them they will be there most of the winter. Later Darrell.

Darrell, Thx for the help... Independence is a great lake (had a musky eye up the aqua view yesterday)but can be frustrating especially when all i was catching were perch.

Was out on Indy on Monday didn't do that great. Some small perch missed a few bigger bites probably a couple small eyes as I have caught a few out there this year as well. Haven't had much luck finding the crappie this year but will keep trying. Had much better luck on this lack years before but not so much this year.

Was out monday, 20 small crappies, 6 eyes, one was 22 inches, lost one bigger. ice is about 8 inches, like others said it's a tough pull out there. two years ago I could get 10 inch crappies, seems like the little ones have taken over. anyone looking for decent crappies would do better just about anywhere.

Is there a place to access the lake outside of the park so I don't have to pay the daily fee?

Hi Guys,

Looking for a spot to go with my dad this weekend. I was thinking I should head out and try Indy. Have the crappie picked up at all? Are the Walleye still biting? Any suggestions for a better lake in the area (West Metro)? Also, where is the park? Maybe a name for the park and I can look it up.

Thanks and good luck everyone.

hardwaterguy - guess you got brave enough to take out the house.

Let me know how it goes tomorrow night. I have a couple groups of guys that are looking for me to take them to some fish. I was thinking of Independence as the lake of choice.

Good luck.

hardwaterguy - will do. I am not sure where to fish on the lake since I have never been there.

It looks like the main part of the lake is just a big bowl going to a depth of 58'. I want to find some Walleye but if we got into decent size crappie that would be great too.

Anyone have suggestions for this lake? Don't have to give me your honey hole but just some thoughts?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
