Advice on skunk sets

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any advice for me on a basic skunk set? Any info on lure, trap size, trap type, etc. would be great. I have a bunch living under my place right now and I would like to get them before spring if possible. Thanks men.

I use conibear traps with good success. The 160 and 220 are legal and effective in my area, be sure to check your state laws though. I set them right in the entrance of the skunk hole, if cats or dogs are on site a peach crate with a large rock on top properly placed will keep any cat or dog from getting caught. Spit.

Wondering, are the skunks active right now? If you have concerns about catching your dog or other critters, you could use a live trap. Just put some stinky food in there and live trap the stinker. Then once you catch him, you can throw a blanket over the whole trap and get rid of him. Works good, I have done it for a few people in this area whom have had problems with stinkers. Hope this helps, Merry Christmas.

Your probably right Leechman, they do not seem very active right now. I am just looking for ideas and I know that you men are the ones to ask for the facts. I did not have very much luck with live traps, the skunks seemed to have the edge slightly with them.

I'm sure we could tell you how to catch them with a leg hold trap, but if the location is close to your house, it's going to be real stinky for a long time. There is no guaranteed to keep him from spraying, once you've caught him. Are you by the buildings? Do you have a dog, or neighbor pets to be concerned about? Any Kids in the area? Lots of things to think about.

No kids at all. Possibly a feral cat or a stray dog. I was wondering how long the spray would last if I got them during the winter. They are living under my little cabin and I can even smell them under their. I got one big female this summer in my live trap, but after that I could not get the rest of them.

Ok, well they are inactive while the weather is cold. Your best chance at them would be in the spring, the first nice days, say 35-40 degrees. They will come out and be really hungry. This is when you should put your live trap out there with some food in it. If you have any smoked type of meat, like old venison jerky or something that has alot of stink to it. I'm sure you will catch those stinkers.

I use the Clam Ice Armor--the ones for about $69.  Not great for dexterity but the warmest I have found.  Get a good muff like Cabelas sells with thinsulite and puta few hand warmers inside.  Work well and keep hands moderately dry. Or, get goretex/thinsulite mists and put a hand warmer in each one.  They slide off easily.   Haven't tried electric.

Fished the SW corner today about 2 miles out. Lowest amount of ice I found was 10" and a few spots well over 20". Before anyone gets too excited I'm pretty sure these spots were where the ice push up on itself or below itself. Rough ice in general. Marked a lot of fish, tried everything and eventually got a few at dusk on a dead stick and a spoon. No big cracks but a few about half a foot and completely open. Nice to get out but was a long walk out and back.

Well I wish you guys would do it after walleye closes. The last few years you guys have done it on the final weekend of walleye  so some people won't do it . Cats don't close so you can do it whenever you want.

Didn't get to swing the sledge on Saturday. Had a bum ankle that has kept me sidelined and was feeling pretty good on Friday so I got out and about shopping. May have over did it and suffered a little bit of a set back but it's pretty good today. Should be able to swing the hammer tomorrow.
