Shakedown Slough - FM Get-Together!

Recommended Posts

I think with the warm weather last week, the snow settled quite a bit. but seeing as how the lake is pretty open and windswept, it is prone to drifiting. For piece of mind, I would bring the sled. You never know if you're going to hit a pocket of slush, with a sled, at least you can get out with no harm. If you do decide to bring out your car, there will be plenty of other vehicles to pull you out in case you do get stuck ;\)

I think I'll just bring the truck and pull the toys. Looking forward to meeting some fellow FM'ers up there and wetting a line again. I haven't been out for a couple weeks, the rooster population was out of control. I had to do my part and find them a home in my freezer!

HIt Man, Most people drive there. it is a long walk from Hawley.

In an reality it is east on 34. After you past the otter tail river. YOu will go down a hill and see a large lake on the left. Houses and a bait shop. Bar on Right side of road. I think it is about 10 miles past DL.

I would like to say thanks to all of those that made it out to HOL today. I had a great time and it was very nice to meet everyone. I am hoping I can make future gatherings such as today's and would like to have another such get-together for the soft water season. The fishing was a hit or miss but I was able to bring home 4 nice walleyes and make some new friends. Thanks again.

Hitman: Where were you? I was looking forward to meeting you in-person. Putting a face to the legend so to speak. Perhaps next time.

Cliffy.

WOW! what a great time! I got to meet a bunch of great guys. A special thanks to DEADHEAD AND FISHERDOG for putting in the right place, I caught my first real walleye and ended up taking 2 nice ones home. Also caught were several Pikes which were real fun to angle with light tackle. Cliffy thanks for the transportation on and off the lake. The only one standing when we left at 4:30 was "BOB". Did you have any luck once the ice was empty? Again, thanks to all.

I iced a 17 incher and that was it and C & R it. I left the lake around 5:00 PM.

The toothy critters scored five on my perch rigs. One break off(my fault) and four bit offs(their fault):-)

I am doing back again for some revenge.<VBG>

Great meeting all of you as well, and I hope you all had a great time. Next year we will try a new lake, and hopefully more people will come or not have as many no shows.

Jeese fella's, I had quite the ordeal trying to get there on Sunday. Here's a tip for everyone, never forget your trailer spare when leaving town for a fishing get together! Ya have to leave your toys on the side of the road, drive to Fergus(cursing the whole way) and search all over town for someone who has the right tire to fix the darn thing. Once everyone tells you they will have to order it, you have to drive back home (cursing some more), stop to buy a pack of smokes(breaking your new year's resolution), get your spare, drive back, fix it, and proceed to the nearest tavern! 2 hours later it's funny!

sounds like a bum deal there. I made sure not to forget my spare, even though I live 15 miles from HoL. you never know what can happen, even on good tires...

sorry you couldn't make it, but there'll be other opportunities for GTGers...

Well, its always in the back of my truck, but ya let someone borrow your trailer and in gets left in the garage. It's attatched to the trailer now.

I don't have a spare for the trailer -- I really need to get one. Where did you guys mount your spare?

Under the trailer?

Ok bear with my vocab here, but I put mine right on top of the tongue or whatever you call it. I just welded a couple bolts to a bracket, welded the bracket to the trailer tongue. The bolts go through the mounting holes of the rim and I thru a couple of wing nuts on those. Put some spray paint on to match and thats it. Kind of a jury rig I know, but it looks good, didn't cost nothin and now I ALWAYS have my spare!

I still have yet to mount mine (even though the trailer is already a year old!). I need to move the toungue jack over a couple inches, so that my spare can sit flush and not be in the way of the salt shield or the toungue jack. I have one of those u-bolt type deals that you can get at any store that sells trailer stuff.

Sorry, I can't remember this guys name. I've been waiting for his e-mail address to send these to him. Thought I'd just post them here. Nice fight and release.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
