BSL reports.....

Recommended Posts

1st the fishing report.

The high pressure has done it again.

Who does a guy have to talk too to get below 30 barometer readings anyway for the weekends.?

Sure we have been catching fish ,but they are coming so tough to come by.

I'm beside myself. Move, move, move trying to find schools is near immpossible and when I do find the fish they are all small which is normal with a high pressure.

I had 4 guys...Phill,Jim,Johhny & Slushy up from Iowa and for the life of me I could not get them into the quality fish I know were there, but thet just were not feeding well.

Every once in awhile a nicer one gets caught.

Here's George once again with a nice slab.As you can see he's using T.H.E. Jig.

Here's Jim watching the tip ups.

08iceseason046.jpg

This is Matt who I met on the ice.

They said the day before when the barometer was 29.6 they pounded some very nice fish.

My luck ....a day late and a dollar short.

08iceseason047.jpg

Fri. night we hit another lake after the day bite on BSL.

We manged several 8" crappies. Not what I was looking for ,but there was some action.

Here was the sunset.

08iceseason037.jpg

Sat. was the last day we fished.

We hit several spots on this day with not much to show for our efforts.

I think about 10 fish were caught all day between 5 people.

Johhny & I had 7 between us.

Here's Jonny with the big fish of the day.

It was sorta the stamp on the day.

I a big fat eelpout.Go figure.

08iceseason051.jpg

They used minnows of all sizes and waxies.

I used T.H.E. Jig and not bragging, just making a point.

I caught as many fish as the 4 of them.

This does not mean they are bad fishermen. Not by any means.

They were a blast to fish with and knew what was what.

Downsizing was the key.

It was too bad they came that far for the kind of treatment Big Sandy is know for dishing out.

I hope they had a better day today on the Big Pond.

CK,

As always, great fishing report. Keep them coming. I love the pictures too. When the crappies are biting, what depths have you had success with at this time of year? Thanks.

I'm getting them in 19 FOW in the narrows as close to Floe's island as possible at the bottom of the break.

In Bill Horn 22-25 FOW on either side of the point or 100 yards s. of the point.

On the main upper part of the lake there are several 30-40 foot holes.

I like to get on the edge of the holes in 28-30 FOW.

BSL is a tougher lake when the pressure gets over 30.

Get as small as you can.

Minnows will be too large on those days.Waxies are a better bet.

I do not use meat at all.Either small plastics or hair jigs in the 80th oz. range are what put the fish in my hands.

Nice burbot Johnny! Hope you kept it! they are the best eating fish in Minnesota! Last year some of the BSL guys got to see me do a mad dash to stop someone from cutting his line when he had one and didnt want to handle it! If I am up there and you catch one, I will gladly trade a walleye or 5 crappies for it!

Just let me know when you are heading this way & I'll give

you a heads up on what part of the lake I'll be on.

hey Solo,if we get some decent pressure readings you should swing over, shoot ...it's only a hop -skip.

Those fish on 12 can wait.

Hey CK, Where is Bellhorn Bay? Not at all familiar with BSL.

Sure would like to give it a try this winter. Is fishing good throughout the winter or does it die off after first ice?

Good Luck, ole

Go west on 14 from 65 at Sathers which is 9 miles or so n. of McGregor.

So after going east on 14 for a few miles 5 I think. You'll see the Prairie River Retreat.Go 9 tenths of a mile past that and go left at the CYC signs.

Go 1 mile drop down the bog hill you'll see lake on both sides.

Bill Horn Bay is on your left.

Hey Guys,

I am coming up there in a couple of weeks to fish BSL and have a couple of questions. First, we have 12 guys coming and only have a couple of houses. Does anyone have fish house rentals on BSL? Next, we are going to be going for the 'eyes'. Where are some good places to hit for walleyes on BSL? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Jason

There used to be a guy that rented houses in north billhorn. Not sure if he is doing it again? I don't fish for "eyes" on BSL in the winter, but you could try by floe's island in the narrows. I was fishing this weekend on the north end and I caught a lot of Jumbo Perch and quite of few 10 inch crappies that I threw back. Where did the monster crappies go that I used to catch??? Good luck trying to find the "eyes"!

Fishbock, Floe's Island is actually Ignmansons (sp??) Island. There is a big white house on it. Look for the icehouses gathered in the narrows in front of it.

How is the ice out there? Any driving going on? Slush pockets? My father and I are planning a trip sometime during the middle of next week. Crappies during the day and walleyes toward dark. I will report how we did. Just need a quick ice report.

I was up last weekend and saw some slush here and there but with this cold spell it should be good. Also found that the bite for the waldos/perch is good between 9-11:30 am due to the stained water but thats just me.

good luck and good fishin

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
