British scientists say fish do feel pain

But anglers dismiss study
Despite the research, Gone Fishing's Charles Jardine says the "millions of anglers throughout the whole of the world" don't see themselves as cruel individuals.

LONDON, April 30 — Anglers take note — British scientists say that after years of debate, they now have proof that fish feel pain.Animal activists are on the warpath after a study released on Wednesday showed how rainbow trout react to discomfort. They condemned fishing as cruel and demanded an end to the sport — but anglers themselves dismissed the study

‘We would encourage anglers to lay down their rods. It’s ridiculous that in 2003 we are still talking about whether fish feel pain — of course they do.’
— DAWN CARR
PETA THE RESEARCH FOUND that fish have receptors in their heads and that subjecting them to noxious substances causes “adverse behavioural and physiological changes.”
“This fulfils the criteria for animal pain,” said Dr. Lynne Sneddon who headed the research, published on Wednesday by the Royal Society, Britain’s national academy of science.
Bee venom or acetic acid was injected into the lips of some of the trout, while control groups of fish were injected with saline solution or merely handled.
The trout injected with venom or acid began to show “rocking” motion — similar to that seen in stressed higher vertebrates — and those injected with acetic acid began rubbing their lips in the gravel of their tank.
“These do not appear to be reflex responses,” Sneddon said.

The affected fish also took three times longer to resume feeding activity compared to those in the control groups.
The team from the Roslin Institute and the University of Edinburgh found the fish had polymodal nociceptors — receptors that respond to tissue-damaging stimuli — on their heads.
It is the first time these receptors have been found in fish. They have similar properties to those found in amphibians, birds and mammals including humans.
Animal activists said the findings showed that fishing was cruel.
‘Until we have proper, bona fide evidence, we will never know. It’s supposition.’
— CHARLES JARDINE
Gone Fishing “We would encourage anglers to lay down their rods. It’s ridiculous that in 2003 we are still talking about whether fish feel pain — of course they do,” Dawn Carr of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) told Sky News.
But anglers vowed to keep on enjoying their sport.
“Until we have proper, bona fide evidence, we will never know. It’s supposition,” said Charles Jardine, director of pro-angling group Gone Fishing.
“I don’t think the millions of anglers throughout the whole of the world would see themselves as cruel individuals.”

I quit. I hereby resign from FM. Thanks for the good times but, in light of the above posting I do not want to be a part of anything that promotes such a cruel sport. I hope I will be setting an example for all of you to follow. Does PETA have a chat forum like this one? I will let you know if I find one.

Best of luck,

Hmmmmm..... fish that were pierced with a sharp needle didn't react different unless that needle was filled with a poisonous substance. Anybody out there using poison injecting hooks?

Posted

If I am not Electrofishing I usually Tip my hooks with some sort of Arsnic or or just spread some D-con Rat poison in the area I am going to fish. Sunnys love that stuff.

My compassionate and empathetic nature will now force me to switch to methods that will not inflict pain on these unfortunate and abused creatures.

Anybody got any dynamite?

OK here's my angle. We are getting different answers to this question every week.I don't really care either way. We are obviously not affecting these fish in the long run if we handle them correctly, and if we keep them, then it really doesn't matter. I hunt, and I'm sure those animals feel something, it doesnt stop me. I play football, I try as hard as I can to hurt the other team, and they try to hurt me, that doesn't bother me. It's a sport. We love it, there is no way in hell we're gonna "lay down our rods", so PETA, shut up!

Barharharharh you beat me to it !!! I just came to post the article !!!!!

YES I AM LAYING DOWN MY ROD.... NOT !!!!!!!!!!

You can ut the same test to most plants and they will react the same way... you cut a tree, sap leaks out, it may not abosorb nutrients as fast, it scars, and has to heal... does that mean we should not wipe our butts anymore ?!?!?!!? or use wood for housing....

How insane... had to vent... know Im preaching to the choir here....

How would you like it if aliens dangled a doughnut on a hook and when you went to eat it they pulled you into their space ship by your lips. Never thought of it that way did you? I am urging you all to lay down your rods and resign from this awful forum.

Someone hooks me in the lip with a hook, I am not fighting it I will tell you that one, I would try and keep the slack in the line. If they are feeling that much pain, one would think they would swim with the reeling in as opposed to pulling and jerking as hard as they can. shocked.gif

After I was done cutting my lawn the other day, I heard this muffled crying. Later, I came to discover that it was my grass crying after I had ruthlessly and savagely minced and mulched all those tender grass chutes. I heard them crying "O Lord, how much longer do we need to suffer at the hand of Evil"

I no longer cut my grass, or fish either. I have shaved my head, and now wear sack cloth.

Tyler... where do you think that cloth came from ???

Go nekkid....

I am not worried about aliens dangling doughnuts. If they start putting hooks in beer we will all be screwed!!!!! I would have to say that Ole has had the best post so far.

I wonder if the cow that they got their hamburger from when they go to McDonalds felt it when they cut it's head off? We are a predator, we eat meat, it may hurt the animal we are eating but it has been that way ever since there were animals eating other animals. Maybe we should try and make all of the predators eat plants, oh wait the plants might feel pain too! This is a bunch of B.S. and that is all I have to say. ><>

Let’s just kill off every predator on the globe so as to not cause any living animal pain. Okay just a little extreme. How about peta matching the money that was spent on such a totally ridicules research project, and using it to help support the wet lands and lakes, that these helpless fish live in.
When will they learn that if it weren’t for the fishermen\women, and the sport of fishing, that many of the lakes and steams would be fishless, and void of life. I would be the first to lay down my pole if I was causing the extinction of a species. But as far as I can tell we have no fish on the extinction list here in Minnesota.

LOL, I have read all these posts and they are funny as heck! Hooks in donuts? What were you smoking when you thought of that? Poor little plant. grin.gif I agree with most here PETA *###@$! I saw a lady with a PETA shirt on the other day and I had to confront her. She had no answers, so I asked her why she was wearing the shirt? She couldn't tell me. Bunch of brain dead people.

Ok.. here's a perspective for those PETA peeps to consider. In nature there are three kinds of animals: Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores. Certain Carnivores and Omnivores in nature are often 'cruel' with their prey. If you've ever watched a cat 'play' with a mouse you know what I mean. Bears, an example of an Omnivore; are notorious for mauling their prey. Point being is this: Man are omnivores, and it's in our nataural diet to eat some meat. Those who do not eat meat often need to take artifical vitamins and supplements to keep them healthy. I really doubt anyone back in the Stone Ages would have went very far if they decided to become a vegitarian.

So in that light.. is hunting and fishing really that much more 'crueler' than what is found in nature-- being ripped apart and toyed with when the prey is still alive? Consider that. All pain is in animals a natural defence mech. to warn the creature that something is dangerous to their health.

Is Scenic tackle planning on coming out with a line of bee venom jigs? Or would this be more of a Berkley powerbait flavor?

Good point, do those PETA punks like a sport like hunting more than fishing? Because the point of hunting is to bring down an animal as qwick and clean as possible. Maybe I can get clearace from them to use a couple "bunker-busters" next deer season, cause they seemed to put anything in their way out of it's misery pretty quick, just ask the Royal Republican Guard... or look over what is left and make your own evaluation.
