I moved here from out east last summer and had alot of luck fishing from shore in the metro for bass, panfish and northerns. I am not a walleye expert, but I've heard they like the deep water. Do I just resign myself to not targeting walleyes from shore or is there just some secret I'm not aware of. I've never tried the rivers, but I'm willing to try. For convenience sake though I'll take any advice on the west metro lakes.

There are some decent options for lakes in the west metro that I know of
Waconia,
You can wade the lake out in front of the ball room and along the clay banks and have some luck throwing cranks at dusk or dawn. This is especially good in the fall.
Minnetonka,
Any one of the channels can be good in the spring and the fall. The walleys are on the move and can be cuaght by most techniques here.
As for rivers...You are in luck! you live near some excellent walleye water. Some places to try are with easy access are,
Outlets by Black Dog Power plant in B'Ville, and the creek inlet in Chaska under the hwy 41 bridge.

You can't keep em, but the fishing can be good for eyes and a mixed bag at the Ford Dam. I like the Minnehaha confluence best.

Also the Coon Rapids Dam and Anoka Dam.

I agree with Basspastor. But all of Hidden Falls Park can hold eyes close to shore. Last year about this time by buddy caught a 25" eye off a current break with a crank.

Heck, it maybe even bigger, but anycase it was a nice fish.

What part of the *west metro* are you most likely to be fishing? There is a near endless amount of decent shore fishing to be had in the metro area.

I always tried to focus on the lakes and rivers out my *back door* 1st and then moved onto other locations following word of mouth, or by spending countless hours with map books and DNR surveys.

Walleyes are not a complicated fish to pursue from shore. As with the rest of the aerodynamic(sp?) mid-large size tooth critters in our metro waters, they are simply a predator fish that will go where the food is, shallow or deep .. but prefers to do it in the low light, or transition hours on most lakes.

If I knew the general area you are targeting, I will help if I can.

I have watch people catch lots of smaller eyes on Harriet from the fishing pier. Meanwhile all we were getting out of the boat was bass.

Simple leech and hook under a bobber.

Fisher Dave, I live in West Bloomington, work in Minnetonka, with in-laws in Chaska. I can find an excuse to hit anyplace west of 35W and south of 394. The only boat I have consistent access to is a canoe which I use if I've got more than a few hours. More interested in places I can hit from shore. I keep a medium 2 pc spinning rod with a small pack full of tackle in my car and do alot of spur of the moment fishing. Like I said, don't know the lakes here too well so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

shorelunchman,
If you have access to a canoe Parley is a good little walleye lake near you. Last year we did pretty well fishing them in the early spring. try the north end of the lake. Parley is located just east of Lake Waconia.

10-15 years ago we used to catch some eyes off of the dock on Lake Susan...it took some serious pressure after that though and the population was seriously thinned out. It is right in Chan. May be worth a shot.

Good luck,
