Been to White Bear the last 3 days. Limmited out on crappies all three times. They are running pretty good most are 9 - 10 inches. The biggest we caught was 14 inches. caught them on small minnows the smaller the better and flu flu type jigs. Black, purple, and white worked the best. Caught a few nice sunnies also, snake northerns, and a nice smallie, all released of course. If you go get there early cause the wait to launch your boat will be awhile. Most of the fish are males so they aint spawned yet. good luck...

Where on White Bear are you catching this crappies. I would like to learn White Bear. I am used to fighing the west metro but now that I live in maplewood I want to learn White Bear and Bald Eagle...

Posted

south side of the island. six to nine feet of water. look for all the boats, then stay to the outside of them a ways.

That sounds great, I am going to try to get out on the lake this Sat. and was thinking about Bald Eagle or White Bear. Where is the boat launch on White Bear and just how early do I need to get there to get a parking spot.

Thanks
Steve

My brother and I also did really well on White Bear over the weekend. We caught them on a number of different jigs tipped with a crappie minnow. If it wasn't opener next weekend I'd probably be heading back there for some more crappie action.

Posted

Protrapper...if you limited out 3 days last week, and kept 25 more crappies this weekend. You realize that the possession limit...the most you can have at anytime in your freezer/livewell etc... is 15 right??? Youre basically saying you kept a little over 50 crappies in a week and a half?

Just a reminder that the new possession limits for crappies take effect this Saturday. Only 10 crappies can be kept per person then.

Slowdown there Wizkid,

Nowhere in his posting does it say they went into the Freezer? And the last time I checked the regs if I had a paid license to Angle my family & I still have the right to eat fish for dinner once & awhile correct?

Please read more carefully before attacking someone for posting info on thier success & sharing it with the rest if us.

Later,

Protrapper,

Daily possesion limit is 10 per person. This is a new limit set by the DNR. Be carefull on Whitebear as there is always a DNR or sheriff around, checking people.

Posted

Just to be clear, I used my family of 4 as an example. I don't think I've ever had more than 1 or possibly 2 limits of crappies in my freezer at any given time. We normally eat what we catch that day or very soon after. I'm blessed that I get to fish often enough to have fish in the freezer for a dinner or maybe two, but I surely don't get to fish often enough to throw them all back.

Pig_sticka,

It sounds like you better go count the fish in your freezer. Last time I checked a limit of crappies was 15.

Metrojoe,

If you gave an identification tag (your name and address) with the fish, they are legal.

Posted

Please dont attack me. If you read most of my posts I release MOST of my fish. Keep in mind we could have kept 30 crappies between my girlfriend and I but we kept 25 to eat THAT NIGHT. As far as the other nights I have 5 people in my house who have licenses and we ate all those fish already so dont rip into me. ALL THE FEMALES THAT I COULD TELL I RELEASED AND I KEPT MALES. ONLY THE SMALLER ONES WHERE FEMALES WITCH I COULDNT TELL. Also I was with 2 or 3 people every time I fished and one guy never caught anything. So mind your business if you dont know what your talking about.

Posted

metro it was just a number
if you want have a arguement with me bring it elsewhere
count 15x3 45
then a day with 25 keepers = 70 that is what you know what was kept
so sorry metro
why does everyone want to argue with me lol
anyone want to get the sticker off my back

Posted

If you new how to add pig sticka you could see I only kept 70 fish. Now break that down my girlfriend could have kept 15 and I 10 but we split them and ate them that night. So how do you get well over 100 fish. And the other nights the fish where split up between others. ONLY ONCE DID I KEEP 15. My father was a guide and my two cousins are and a friend. I also guide fly fisherman in float tubes for trout in the summer on the North Shore, I know all bout catch and release pal.

I AM SIMPLY AMAZED AT THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW THE GAME LAWS OFF THIS STATE.

Thanks for sticking up for me metro joe. There are others on this site who know me from all over the state and know my fishing practices.

I did every thing I could to help people catch fish on the Bear. Told them the lake, spot, depth, lures, bait, and time they where biting. What more could you ask for.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THIS WEEKEND!!!!
LETS FISH AND QUIT COMPLANING AND RIPPING EACH OTHER>> LATER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

however you want to put it eh
good fishin

thanks basshunter,
I guess I better make sure I tag it next time.

Pig_sticka,

Lets see, you accuse a fellow fisherman of selling fish, then you accuse him of keeping over his limit and then you draw question to his sportsmanship. I can't be sure, but it seems to me your looking for the fight. So why don't you take it some where else?

All I did was point out the fact that 4+ limits does not equal over 100 fish. The way I read your post it appeared you thought the limit was more than 15.

Anytime protrapper,
Thanks for all the info. Good luck this weekend.

protrapper actually posted valuble info, in fact I used some of it myself and now I have 17 crappies in the freezer. I imagine that alot of guys/gals come to these forums looking for recent info about their favorite lakes. I didn't come her to argue. I just didn't understand the negative attitude towards protrapper. I feel that his post is a big part of what these forums are all about.

Protrapper, I appreciated the advise on where you were catching them and the presentation you were using. I live with in 15 minutes of White Bear and Bald Eagle and want to learn both of this bodies of waters. I fish Mille acs and a lot of west metro lakes but want to learn some in this area now that I have moved to Maplewood.

Posted

wizkid,

You can have a limit of crappies in your freezer for every person in your family as long as they possess a fishing licence or are under the age of 16. I have a family of four so technically I could limit out four times in four days and still be legal.

basshunter,

The new regulations pertaining to possession take effect on May 10th(fishing opener).

As I was thinking about this It occured to me that I have given my relatives fish in the past and they don't fish. Is that illegal?

Posted

Guess that came out a little harsh...didnt mean to make it sound that way.

If you feel the need to possess 3 or 4 dozen fish...go ahead. Don't even think about complaining when fishing slows or starts to get "tough". Ive seen way too many metro lakes deteriorate in fish size and quantity over the past 5-10 years.

There IS a reason why they are reducing limits after all.

Posted

protrapper you sell your fish? 4 limits of crappies in less than a week. what ever happened to catch n release on bigger fish. you just took out over 100 crappies that were just going to spawn.

how the dnr keeps these metro lakes going i dont know. but they get my applause.

Protrapper,

I also agree that the information you have given is extremely helpful. I also would like to fish white bear, but have no idea were to start. I fish the St. Croix alot and would like to get to know this lake. I was hoping to try and fish the lake this weekend, but need a little help as to were I could even start. I like to fish for mostly Crappies and walleyes. Any info wouold be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Pig_sticka

I can share your concern about the dwindling population of larger fish in metro lakes. I've seen it happen on a few metro lake in the last 5 to 10 years. It is depressing. I also agree that catch and release should be promoted more for all fish species, but please point out where anyone here is promoting freezers full of fish or eating fish everyday of the week.

pig stika- i've got my running shoes on! *come on going out and taking a limit one day and eating it, which by the way if you eat 30 crappies that are half pound you and your family must awful hungry. and then retuning the next day to do the same is totally 100% legal. but it is still wrong and when W.B. is like bbald eagle you will wonder where all the slabs are? Common sense is becoming rarer every day.

Posted

Hey TRZ you are pretty stupid pal. I kept one limit of 15 crappies one day. The other two where split up betweem me and two other guys. Then the next trip we kept 25 between two people, we couldve kept 30 and and they where split up and ate that night between 6 people and we have 5 liceneses in this house. So up your butt buddy. Your just pissed cause you cant catch fish, most likely.

Goodness. I feel like I'm on some kind of site for the mentally ill sometimes.  🤨 I know he said this but look at the last board printout!  He meant smurfy on April 29th!   8 hours ago, JerkinLips said: Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.   I changed it to just a date numb nuts!  April 25th! Nah, I'm not changing my guess. It's more fun to make early predictions and see how far off I am.   I'll turn on the hair dryer and see if it helps.

Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.  Also, since SkunkedAgain was the originator of this competition and was the 1st person to guess, I will give him until Friday to change his prediction if he wants to (although he may regret if the ice goes out on April 18th).  After him, no more "changes" will be allowed on my board.   Lots of "good" open dates available for those that have not predicted yet.  Updated board below:

https://www.timberjay.com/stories/moccasin-point-upgrade-has-longtime-users-concerned,22802   Moccasin Point upgrade has longtime users concerned DNR hopes to get major remake of key access underway later this year Posted Thursday, March 20, 2025 10:36 am   Marshall Helmberger LAKE VERMILION— With funding finally in place, the Department of Natural Resources is planning to move forward with an estimated $2-plus million renovation of the Moccasin Point landing, and users of the site say they’re concerned about the changes. The landing has been heavily used for decades by anglers, Boundary Waters visitors, residents of nearby islands and other remote-access properties on Lake Vermilion and, perhaps most critically, by emergency responders for everything from fire to medical response. Moccasin Point has also been a protected harbor for private barges loading and unloading as they service the many water-access properties in the area. Sarah Schmidt, who spends summers with her husband Jake at their cabin on nearby Pine Island, said there’s a lot at stake for people who depend on the landing. “A lot of people have designed their dream home around having access to that landing,” she said. “People need propane, they need lumber, and if they need to install a septic system, they need lots of gravel,” she said. For the many hundreds of island or other water-access property owners on the lake, all of that material comes by barge. Moccasin Point is particularly well suited for such use, since it is arguably the most protected harbor on Lake Vermilion, with islands and mainland protecting it from wind from just about any direction. It’s also centrally located on the sprawling lake and close to concentrations of island homes and cabins. Scott Kelling, northeast regional manager for DNR Parks and Trails, said the plans for the reconstruction of the landing are still being finalized, but insisted they will take into account the unique mix of recreational and commercial use of the landing, including use by all three of the barging companies that service customers on the lake. According to Kelling, the remake of the landing will include removal of the old pier and the reconstruction of a new one in nearly the same location. “The new pier will serve the same function,” said Kelling, and will include an additional ramp that will be dedicated for barge loading and off-loading. Kelling said an engineer’s inspection of the existing pier determined it was near the end of its useful life, although Schmidt said she thinks that opinion reflects the DNR’s desire to remove the structure rather than its actual condition. Kelling acknowledges that it’s not the only reason for replacing the structure. “With our redesign it’s just not in the right location,” he said. Adequate parking is another major concern of longtime users of Moccasin Point. Tim Logan, whose family has owned island property near the landing since the 1950s, said plans the DNR had shared a few years ago seemed to show less parking than is typically used at the site. Schmidt notes that during high-traffic weekends, the parking area is frequently full and overflow parking can extend for hundreds of feet along Moccasin Point Rd. She said she counted 163 vehicles parked at the landing at one point last Memorial Day weekend and said there are routinely 90-100 vehicles during the summer season. Many of the regular users of the landing, particularly those on island properties, use the site for long-term parking of their vehicles for days, weeks, or months at a time. That’s unusual at public landings, which are typically limited to day use. Kelling said the DNR is making an exception to that rule for Moccasin Point, given the many varied uses of the unique property. “Overnight parking will be allowed,” he said. Kelling said the current plan will allow parking for a bit over 100 vehicles, which is more than some original plans for the site. “We’re doing everything we can to maximize the parking there, at some considerable expense,” he said. Longstanding issues Kelling said the DNR’s plan for reconstruction is motivated by a desire to “manage the site more responsibly on a number of fronts.” The DNR acquired the site in 2008 and had planned to undertake reconstruction of the landing back in 2013 but lacked the funds at the time to accomplish the work. The funding was approved in 2023 and the DNR has been working on design of the project ever since. According to Kelling, the site has operated essentially as a “free-for-all” for years, with uses and resource impacts that aren’t typically permitted at DNR-managed access points. “There are currently a number of transgressions out there,” said Kelling, including long-term storage of personal property and building materials. He said the site, which slopes toward the lake, also contributes large amounts of sediment into Vermilion during heavy rainfall. “We need to better manage the stormwater,” said Kelling. “Currently, a lot of sediment and other things end up in the lake when it rains.” Schmidt questions whether the change will be an improvement, since the DNR’s reconstruction of the site will convert the existing grassy hillside that currently serves as the site’s parking lot into a paved parking area. Kelling said the parking area will be leveled before being paved and that stormwater will be directed into one of two planned stormwater ponds in order to contain sediment. Schmidt claims the ponds will become a mosquito breeding ground. Kelling said he expects the final design will be completed soon and he is expecting to hold an open house in early summer so interested users can see what’s planned for the site. He expects actual construction to begin sometime in October if all goes as planned. That initial work will include blasting of some underlying bedrock in order to level the site. But most of the work will take place in 2026, he said, and during that period, it may be difficult to maintain public use of the site, although he said use of the site by barges should still be possible, with potentially some minor delays. But he said other users of the site may want to explore other access options for that summer. Kelling said he hopes to have more information on that at the open house later this year. “A goal of the open house is to really share the timeline and alternatives for users,” he said. “They might need to park somewhere else in 2026.”
