Welcome aboard!

Pelican --

Heard some good things. Ice -- well that is anther matter. I would not go all over, but I hear there is 6-7 inches in spots.

I am it has made some ice recently, but this snow is going to make things tough.

Maybe the fellas from Barnesville have some recent updates.

Krebsy -- where are you?

Got my house out, but it took three hours. Ice is flooding and the heavy snow was NOT fun.

Some goof was flowing around with two plows by his fish house right at prime time. That kinda messed things up for us. The guy a little ways away from us was yelling at those guys. Kinda funny.

I don;t understand why they had to put it out at prime time then not fish and just left it.

Got one 16 incher.

Hit, I was out on Sat. Too much noise from the boys with the wheelers. 3:30- 5:30 straight noise. Alls I can say is WOW.. Should of went muzzy huntin. Fishin sucked, not a bite. I did find someones plastic weeds on shore. Too the two guys that were out fishin the old fashion way, standin outside with candles and fishin hard, my hat goes off too you. Sorry I couldn't pull you up but the throttle cable on the wheeler was froze and I finally broke it. I did get it up too the truck thanks too a good guy named Tim from Hawley. Thanks Tim I really appreciated that. Thats why I like Pelican, You can almost always get a helping hand. The access was probably worse than the lake as far as snow goes. The parking lot had more snow than the lake. Everyone I seen go out on wheelers looked like they made it w/o too many stops. Chains def.will help. Hope too get back out this week and do some spearing. I can't wait too get the Hilton out there and set up,Not till it's truck time for that. She's BIG,,Beautiful and weighs a ton .wait a minute.. am I talking about my fishhouse or my old lady..The Krebsy. ooo.gif

I would like to introduce myself to the group. My name is Jeff and I am new to the area. I am curious at how the fishing is and what is the best way to gain access to Pelican lake. I am an active duty soldier just returning from Iraq and I have this winter to fish. I hope to meet some of you.

Thanks,

Jeff

delta8683, welcome to FM/HSO! Thank you for your service defending this great country.

I'm not much help on Pelican, but our other members here are quite resourceful. Hopefully you can make it to our get-together, TBD sometime in January.

Welcome Jeff

There are two main winter access points that i consider safe. The one is the public access on the west side of the lake, the other is over by Zorbaz. Both will get you on the ice. I dont say hte East access only because i dont use it in the winter because of the river there. Good Luck. Any more questions just post, we are pretty good about answering them.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the advise. I don't specifically need to fish Pelican, it is just one of the lakes I picked out on the map. I would gladly take any sugestions. Steve, thank you for the offer; let me know when your headed out and I would be happy to go fishing. The Army is currently giving me a year off by sending me to school, which means I have the next 5 weeks off. Nothin' but fishing for this guy.

I'm headed out on Friday, I will let you guys know how I do.

v/r

Jeff

Muskie --

Yes you are safe.

That being said, I would NOT travel all over the place. You never know where you might end up. Just use you head for something other than a hat rack (my dad used to tell me that wink.gif) and you should be just fine.

Let us know how you do.

Sweet. I thought I'd be OK with all the talk of people out there whith wheelers and houses. So there should be about 9 inches of ice? Been fishing Pelican, both soft and hard water, for quite a few years now so I'll just stick with the tried and true (a.k.a. safe) spots and hope for the best. Thanks for the info Hitman!

P.S. LOVE that game! Saw the movie opening weekend.

Not sure about the 10 inches all the way out into the west bay -- I would think it would have more than Saturday, but I will give everyone an update after fishing this afternoon.

SLOW night. Wow.

No bites from 3-7:15.

Made a new friend out there. "Bare" it was good to meet ya! Thanks to Krebsy for the jerky!

We just have to hope it will get better.

I am flooding a little bit and it made next to ZERO ice since Saturday. Not good. I would say it made a 1/4 inch.

I might move out a little deeper this weekend -- going to think about it anyway.

That is the report.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
