Has anyone been out on rush lake yet?

One of my buddies said he might try to get out there on Saturday so if anyone has an update on the current conditions, it would be appreciated.

Just got in from the deep spot out from the western public access. About 3 inches of ice, several spots with lots of water on top of the ice.

Crappie man. Fished for a couple of hours, caught some small ones. I live in Shoreview as well, you get out ever to Owasso or Wabbasso? I have never tried them.

I would use extreme caution with the snow covering up the thin spots... You never know what is under you!

i just got back went probably 200 yards out of the public access drilled a good number of holes and found 3-6 inches in every spot, thats not to say there aren't very thin area's. I wore my ice picks out there I always feel a lot safer with those things on, and i would encourage everyone else to wear them as well when going out on this early ice,

As of yesterday, Rush Point store's website was reporting 4" by Cigar and 2 over by Wilson. It didn't say if it was the North or South end of Wilson. I know ice was a bit sketchy last winter on the South end of Wilson.

When I was heading to Rush last weekend the bait store in harris right off of 35 told me people were out on Pokegama, other than that haven't heard anything. You targeting crappies?

yup we will be going after some crappies out there.. we have a pretty decent little spot where we can usually limit out... i was hoping we could take out the wheeler but i dont know if that will be possible.. although the next few nights are supposed to be FRIGID!!! saturdays low in the heart of the cities is -8 which means up north it coul;d get down to 20-25 below!!! now that would be makin some serious ice.. looks like there is no 30's in sight in the 7 day forecast either!! shaping up to be a very good cold year even though we got the snow on the lakes a bit to early...

Later,

Ryan

Hey Crappieman....I have some decent spots on Pokegama as well, I grew up fishing it and have pulled some really nice crappies out of it, abeit it has been several years since they were sizable. Its a pretty easy lake to fish by looking at a depth map. Would be willing to swap spots with you thru email if you are interested.

You must have been there the same time we were. My dad and I were out there about 7:30 Sat. morning. We picked up a few crappies and 2 'eyes, one walleye came off at the hole and one that we did get in the house was only 11". I guess we were there until about 11:30. I would guess we had 4 1/2- 5" where we were. All I know is I could stick my hand in the water and grab the entire thickness of the ice. The ice that was there was good ice, but in some areas there was about an inch of slush on top of the ice. It's been cold so I am expecting more wheeler traffic this weekend.

WEST RUSH/ ANYBODY BEEN OUT WITH A WHEELER FROM THE PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE HUMPS RIGHT OUT FROM THERE?

I was out yesterday and there were wheelers running out in front of the west access. The ice thickness varied a little bit. Where I was fishing there was 4.5" of clear ice then 2" of white, frozen slush ice. Believe it or not there was a blazer parked on the ice half way between the access and the deep hole. I couldn't believe it! Fishing was a little slower than I expected but still caught a bunch of crappies and 1 33" northern.

Creating a parking lot on the ice? That is how about 4 vehicles went down, I believe 2 years ago in front of the access.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
