I am wondering the same thing. There were a lot of people out there tonight when I drove by. Think there were a few wheelers and snowmobiles racing around the lake as well.

Can't help you with the aera by the Courthouse.

But there's 5 1/2 to 6 inches out form the other access by the park in town. I have been out there twice, Wed and Thursday Dec 5th and 6th.

I would be real catious by the Courhouse aera. That ice was very mixed early, with open spots mixed with ice over stuff so there will be some good ice and som not NEAR as thick... CHECK IT YOURSELF and OFTEN !!! Don't think if one spot is good it all the same, IT"S NOT !!!!

BE SAFE!!!!

Chatted firsthand with folks working at H&H, Little Jim's and BJ's today. Here's what I got:

H&H: "5-8 inches on Maple and Ramsey with random weak patches" I noted a nice deep slush trail from a snowmobile on the east side of Ramsey, and there were two portables out over the SE hole.

Little Jim's: "1-6 inches" "Which lakes have which?" "All of 'em have all thicknesses. Take your chipper, and be careful." "How'd Clearwater freeze up - all at once?" "No - spotty."

BJ's: "So I see there's a couple spear shacks out" [on clearwater] "Yeah, they're nuts. There's 1-3 inches out there." I also noticed at least 3 land-to-lake snowmobile tracks that all started with nice, deep dips into water for a good 15 yards...

Get used to sketchy ice thickness, its going to be a crap shoot for a while with the snow.

And I see Pulaski skimmed over - that actually seems a smidge early for the Old Deep One.

Pulaski has been froze over for the better part of this week. Some guys have been saying they have three inches of ice in front of their homes and there is a small spear shack out there (he's nuts). Either next weekend or the one after I think that lake'll be good to go.

Was out on Buffalo last night in front of the court house there was anywhere from 4-7 inches of ice with some slushy spots out a little further. There was plenty of fourwheeler and snowmobiles out and about. We caught some crappies and walleyes, but they are all really small. Not worth the cold and walk think I will try elsewhere today.

I was out on clearwater on sunday. I went out from BJ's about 200 yards to the east and about 100yards from shore. Ice was any where from 2 inches to 7 inches of ice/frozen slush. Most areas were 3-5 inches. Fishing was poor but I couldn't make it where I wanted, Not easy walking in snow and slush!

I was out on buffalo on saturday night with the fourwheeler. I only went out about 1/2 mile from the south access and had 7-7.5 inches of ice everywhere I checked. I am going to check further out and hopefully get the wheel house out this weekend. I got 2 13 inch walleyes in a couple hours. I am not trying to say there is 7 inches of ice on buffalo because I know there is a lot less im many places so be prepared and be safe checking thickness often.

Your a brave soul. We were out on Buffalo sat morn till about 5 pm and we measured ice anywhere from 3.5 to 6.5 at the most...lake seemed to be very uneven just a few feet apart.

I was out just before the snow to check it out. The north end is very bad with many spots that were still open at the first big snow on saturday. The south half was all frozen before the snow and everywhere I checked at that time was 4 inch and quite consistant. This was in a faily localized area of the south side from the south access. I always check thickness often to be safe. I would not venture out on the north side without checking the thichness at lease every 1 to 2 feet with a chizel or something if I would go at all. I usualy fish the north for early ice but not this year. I'd rather not go for a swim.

Fished Cedar last night by the County Park. Had 4 inches good ice and 1.5 milky slush ice.

A guy on a sled was hugging the shoreline doing about 60 mph and made the water come up through the holes in my shack.

NO FISH

I rode the sled around mitchell, then onto big. I stayed close to shore though. but it seems the slush is starting to freeze through. there was a wheeler that pulled a house out near the channel on big.

being that it has been so dang cold at night, i think all the slush is starting to go away, and we are going to have normal ice conditions.

I was out on Buffalo on thursday and walking out from the north side of the lake (courthouse) I didn't cross any slush. The other lakes I've been on also didn't have any either.

Fished one of the little lakes south of Howard. 8-10 inches. Should be people taking out cars and stuff by next weekend, 1/2 ton trucks by Christmas.

I wish that were true but I don't think it's gonna happen. The weather people are predicting highs near 30 all week and the lows only getting down to the teens and 20s. Hopefully it'll get cold again and we'll be able to go out after new years.

  • 1 month later...

Vehicles were all over on Clearwater. There is a road that leads to the east side.

The road ends right at the narrows. There are thin ice waring signs all around there. Didn't go past it. Fished some of the deeper holes on the west side. Didn't mark much. Worked my way around to the group of houses in front of BJs and caught a bunch of small crappies. Didn't sound like anyone was catching much of anything. Maybe later this winter things'll start picking up...

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
