1st Ice Event on Fish Lake Sat Dec. 8th

Recommended Posts

Well guys we are shooting for Sat Dec 8th out of High Banks Resort. I have Cabins 3 and 4 reserved for Friday/Sat.

I will need a idea of how many guys want to stay those nights so if I need to cancel 1 cabin I can do so in time.

As usual support Tim at High Banks for all he does for this event.

Im hoping ice is good enough for wheelers/sleds. It was at this time last year, we went all over the lake but by the bridge and D a m of course.

So lets hear who all will be there.

I will be fishing all day Friday if anyone wants to join me.

Last time I came down I got such a wild ride over the ice that I had two rods broken for me and the terminals on my Vex battery turned completely into pretzels. Thank God I had my camera gear in a fully padded bag or I'd be talking $10,000 in ruined gear. Not really eager to have that happen again. Can't afford to spend that kind of money on top of $3.09/gallon gas. blush.gif

If I come down this time, I'll be on my own and happy to be that way. grin.gif

If its safe for wheelers I will be there. Last year I was on foot and had to rely on a ride from Northalnder. Thanks for the lift Steve but I hate imposing on others. It will be a one day only event for me, but I had a good time and caught a few fish last year.

Reminds me, gotta start planning for another Minnesueing outing.

So that was your ice rods that poked holes in my new Otter?grin.gif

Not to mention all your busted cans of Diet Coke everywhere. shocked.gif

Even with all that I seem to remember I guided you on a 26" eye. wink.gif It was worth it.

Of coarse I'll be there.

Hey Gang,

I'm happy to say that Hunting season is over and I'm looking forward to getting out on the ice. I have the whole weekend off including Friday. So count me in for any and all fishing that will be taking place. I have a couple four wheelers that I or someone else can bring up for us to use. I will be staying at home also.

I'll be there with wheeler again. Hopefully, this time, there is no towing of broken down snowmobiles on the ice!

I'm waiting. Hope Gander has some good "day after thanksgiving" sales! I'm looking forward to their Ad coming in!

LOL, I had almost forgot about that one grin.gif He's (the rat) probably still having bad dreams about that little incident !!

I will be there with Junior, sled and Otter in tow. Will try to see if I can get friday off too, tho Jr has school in the afternoon. Will be staying at home.

Looks like some cool nights/days coming that will hopefully give us some good ice by then.

I keep telling you it wasn't a musk rat it was a wolverine!

I had a nightmare about it too. It lunged at me and chased me and I couldn't get away. shocked.gif

Casey,

I have only heard of the stories on this matter. I'm not the person with any photos. I didn't even get a first hand look at Frank's Moon Walk (Dance) that took place the year before. It just seems to get better each year!!!

Wolverine?! It was a weird cross bred creature of mythical size and shape. More like a woolly mammoth with the head of a grizzly bear, feet and tail of an otter and it was HUNGRY! Luckily 4 of us managed to make a hole in the ice large enough to send it to the depths of Fish lake and spare Frank his life.

I will try to make a showing. Depends on lots of factors, but it looks promising. Frank, is Jr. going or is this an adult thing? BC

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
