I am suprised nobody has started this thread yet, although ice may be a ways off, it can't come soon enough.

I am saying we will have fishable ice by mid December. Well I guess I am hoping we will have fishable ice by mid December, since I will be done with finals on the 15th, and most likely going back to the home state of Wisconsin after that.

A couple questions, where? Up north, metro, southern state? Freeze up? Skim of ice? walkable, driveable? Can be a huge fifference! I would say in my area south of the metro, I will be walking on the ice christmas time. But I usually take the atv out on LOW in the first week of december.

I see 10 days out on Accuweather they are predicting highs in the teens and lows around 4 or 5. Now we just have to wait and see how right they are. I will take those temps a little earlier if they could swing that.

I drove by Lake Crystal one morning a couple days ago when it was really calm and that bay area by the highway had some skim ice cooking. The water should be cooling at a rapid rate now with all the cold nights.

I agree with TO - we will be hitting the ice on New Years...

Well not to sound like an inbred or anything but I think we will have walkable ice by about December 5th. 3 of the past 5 years i was icing by thanksgivin. The other 2 years I was in my boat. Yes these years of early ice were quite dangerous but made much safer with the use of picks ,pfd;s, freinds, cellphones, and other saftey measures. you can always throw out tip ups and go back to the truck and sit at the launch. All this and I was fishin in the Metro and south of the metro. North had 2 to 3 inches of ice at this point.

Anyways did any of you here about the two kids who sunk there old mans boat out on Tonka 2 years back. That year was nasty. from what i seen there was not a sole on the lake. The lake locked up with ice five days later. I seen it on fox 9 news, I think they said they were tryin to make structure for the upcoming ice season. They were hospitalized for hypothermia. Man those kids were lucky, im glad to, all we need is another minnetonka death scene. I guess they were lucky after all it was thanksgiving.

With the water temps as cool as they are and some cooler temps coming and the fact that we are due for some early ice, my bet is that I will be on some smaller lakes with walkable ice by no later then the 12-15th of December.

lets go fishing soon. The gear is ready. smile.gif

The last 4 years I have been on the ice by the 10th of December on the shallower lakes in this area. Yes, one needs to be careful but 3" will work if you walk slow and safe. I also like to use my snow shoes to disperse my weight.

I hope you are right I wouldn't mind being on the ice right now, but that is just me grin.gif

yeah, I think it will be dec. 15 or so when we get walkable ice in SMN. The ten day forecast doesn't even look good for duck hunting frown.gif

The water is cold enough i think. If we get even 3-4 nights at around 15 degrees and not much wind and highs only 30-35 during the day we will be out soon. The 10 and 15 day forecasts are making me very happy! I'm still saying December 1st-5th on the small lakes and ponds! Cant Wait!

Every year it seems we get some cooler temps and I get exiceted and then the wind picks up for a few hours and then its back to the start again.

One of these years the lakes will lock up early and then we will be ready to go.

Maybe this next few weeks. Probably a month yet.

I looked on our digital DTN at work today; high winds and the temperatures aren't low enough to make solid ice for awhile yet. I'm sticking with my initial prediction; Merry Christmas! grin.gif

The 10 day forecast has changed again doesnt look as cold..Hopefully it comes soon enough. Heres some dates that I have been on the ice the last couple years in the Hutch area.

2003- Nov. 28th 3-4 inches

2004- Dec. 17th 4-6 inches

2005- Dec. 6th 3-4 inches

2006(last year)- Dec. 5th 7-8 inches

So it hasnt been that late the last couple years. Lets hope the trend continues.

last year I got out on Dec. 4th. Lasted for 5 days or so and then got really warm for a while and we had to start over. Just put the boat away so I'm hoping it's close.

i dont see any ice till late dec, the way the weather keeps warming up and then cold again high winds dont help either the water temp on fountain lake is at the point of freeze up, at this point o few calm nites should do it, but with the winds up it wont freeze.

We've got a half inch of snow on the ground this morning! Can't be too far off. I don't like the 40's in the forecast though.

we got 1/4" of snow here, yes its going to warm up again booo but the nite time temps will drop up to 20 degress at nite, whatever the day time temp is during the day it uslly signals nite time lows, say if it is 42 high for the day time its around 22 at night, so far what i see is 18 to 24 at night for a avg temps, i havent driven by our lake yet to see what open water there is i figure to much open water and winds will keep it open, i will keep in touch w u more info, but the incations are walleye bite will be hot early and die off till next spring. check back later.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
