Wondering if any trout streams up near the twin cities here. I'm from Rochester area and I know its worth the trip down there but looking for some streams a little closer to home up here or across the border in WI.

Thanks

Theres some Trout streams in Southern Dakota County, near Farmington. Never actually fished the area, but I heard the Kinne is better though. And it's just over the river, I wouldn't even say an hour; It takes an hr to get to Somerset, which is much farther away from the cities. 1/2-45 mins maybe?

My buddy has been having success on the Kinni, personally I've never fished it. Me and him used to fish the Willow River, also in Wis. They are both about the same distance from the cities, about 45min, depending on where you live in the city. The Kinni is south of 94 and the Willow is north of 94. Both are worth a try, cause I've seen or caught plenty of nice trout out of each.

I used to work with a guy that fished the Kinnickinnic River over in Wis. near River Falls area, with in an hour drive from Downtown St.Paul, he always did real well, i'
d think that would be something worth looking in to.

Good Luck

I don't fish trout much, but I know there's Browns Creek in Stillwater, Eagle Creek in Savage & the Vermillion River in Farmington. Also, I believe Valley Creek in Woodbury might be a marginal trout fishery. The Wisconsin waters are probably your best bet for access & decent fish. Vern

If your willing to go into Wisconsin a little ways I can rec. the Rush river at Martell. I am new to fly fishing this year. Because of that I have been out nearly every day since the opening of C&R. I have fished the Willow, the Kinni as well, but I have had exeptional luck at the Rush. Yesterday I hooked a dozen or so 6" to 8" Browns, and Brooks. 1 Rainbow that was about 10" and the best of the day a 18" Brown.

A word of warning: The WI DNR people are out in force checking licenses and for barbless hooks. I was about 1/4 mile upriver from Martell when I hooked the big one, I was fighting this fish for about 3 minutes and stumbling backwards when I turned around to see where I was headed and there stood the Warden. When I had this fish netted he congratulated me and then asked for my license and wanted to see the fly.

When does the barbed hook and keep season begin in WI?

The C&R ends April 27th, and the regular season begins May 3rd for all WI waters

I live in Savage and have fished Eagle Creek. The stream is very clear and beautiful. It is weird to fish it because it flows right through some industrial areas but it is nice to have it close. I have only fished the lower strech. There are some real good looking holes but a lot of real shallow water. I fished it last year in the middle of May. I think a bit late. I caught one fish! Just one fish. It was a giant 18" brown. It was really dark and looked like a rainbow. I plan to try it earlier this year and go all the way up to the springs in the bluffs. I don't really think there is that many fish in there being that I have never seen another fish much less catch one, but it is nice to be out there 3 miles from home.

The kinni is a great trout stream for numbers. I haven't heard about to many trout over 16 inches caught in the Kinni.
The Rush on the other hand. It's hard not to catch a brown over 16 inches in a day of fishing here. 20+ inch trout are very likly here. Some streches seem to hold more of them then others.
April is the best time of year to fish this river for both size and numbers.
I live west of mlps and it only takes me a hour to a hour and a half to get over to the Rush.

The kinni has many fish above 16in. As of last year. I did'nt notice any signs last year but i believe there is no kill 12-16in?
But I did pretty well last year. Below the dam that is. Only tried the Rush 1 time. Everyone I talk to says its got bigger fish in it.Maybe I'll try it on opener. In fact there was a 6lb taken below the dam, yes hard to believe but I seen it,mounted & caught.

I was'nt the one who caught it though.

The first fish i ever caught out of the kinni was a 18" brown below the dam. That was 3 years ago and ever since than i have found just about every hot spot in the stream and i can tell you anything over 14" is big for the kinni. You can catch good numbers but no size.

A few questions; I would like to get out fly fishing in minnesota a bit and was wondering when the season opens or opened? Also, is there a trout stamp like I need in Wisconsin? Any pointers on public access areas withing a 30 min drive of the cities? Thanx in advance.

That helped a little bit I think I will just stick to the Sconsin trout. It will make everything easier.

May 3rd? Yeesh. I plan on having the boat out by then. The whole point of Trout fishing for me would be to get some action in before the end of April. April 12th sounds a lot better.. And I might consider going to that "Trout Day" Jim was talking about in the Trout boards. I'd rather have lots of little fish than a rare big one, but I suppose I will take what I can get.
