I would love to take my son fishing today, some place I could go from shore. It would be great if it was close to the anoka area, but I could drive a little. Does anyone know where I can do some shore fishing in this area? He is only 4, but he loves to fish and I just bought him a new rod and reel. Any advice would be great, because I don't have the time to go driving around everywhere looking for open water today.

Thanks in advance

I would think the Coon Rapids **** would be a decent place to start and wouldn't be to far from you. Multi-species fishing down there after all it is a river. Good Luck

Fishin adict,I live right by that spot. Where is the spot you are talking about? Is it south of main street, by the crosswalk on 169? Where can you park?

Thanks again

Ole, it has been so long since I've fished up that way... I grew up in Andover, so I fished the area a lot as a kid.

Can't remember exactly on the parking, but you cross the bridge near the dam on main street. There are some lights and a fishing area right up by the dam. There is usually someone fishing out there.

We caught Northern, walleye, crappie, smallmouth and rough fish out there by the dam. I've fished coon rapids dam also as a kid quite a bit and didn't do as well as we did by the Anoka dam, although the CR dam area is huge and I'm sure there are good spots there as well... I know there are always guys fishing carp right up by the CR dam. That can be a lot of fun as a young kid.

I'd look for a lake where you can fish sunfish a little later. Can't think of much from shore, although we did some of that too... Crooked lake maybe if that beach is still closed. we fished off that beach area for small crappies, bluegill, northern, and bass. It will be probably 3 weeks before you can fish the lakes though... Lake George out that way is a great lake for panfish action as well and has some shoreline areas that can be fished.

My wife is due with our first in a couple weeks, so I'm starting to scout out some areas in the south metro to shore fish with my new fishing partner in a couple years. I think it will be awhile before he is ready for the boat...

Hey -- I live in Andover and have a 4 year old!!

The Anoka Dam would be a great place to go. Access from the parking areas on the East side, either just North or South of the bridge. Just north of the bridge, under the dam is a dock area, that is down at water level.

Lots of OK shore fishing in the area, Crooked Lake and George both have fishing piers, and the Rum has a few areas from Anoka to St.Francis.

If you have any access questions let me know.

Steve

Thanks for the info guys. I will check out that spot this eve with the little guy. Is the water calm enough to use slip bobbers, or do we need to use something else?

Thanks again for the help.

I've never fished down there, but from my early season experiences. You might want to bottom fish with a slip sinker rig and half a nightcrawler.

Good luck

Are you guys talking about the Rum River dam?
I did make it to Pool 2 on Sat (shore fishing)and it was very busy and all the "good" spots (eddy areas) were covered. Oh well, should've got there earlier. The water is way low to say the least.

Also tried the North Mississippi regional park on Sunday again from shore. I fished with worms and thought I had a bite. Turned out to be a big leaf. Ahh river fishing at its best.

Ole, did you ever go to the spot where the Rum dumps into the Mississippi?

Later,

I have not gone down there yet ebass, I'm going to check out both spots, and fish one tonight.

River fishing for a 4 year old? I'd love to see a Snoopy pole try to handle a 20lb carp. Stick to fishin sunnies and crappies in the lakes!

Hey guys, I think it's OK to spell the word DAM. It's not a 4-letter word. smile.gif Vern

Ole #1,

How'd you do? I'd like to catch a 20lb carp.

Speaking of Carp. Where are they in the river now? Near the dams or..

Crawlerman,

I would try to find some calm spots, so we could throw out a slip bobber. No snoopy rod for him, he got a ultra light ugly stick from grandpa on his birthday. Unfortunatley by the time I got home from work, there was not enough daylight left. We are planning on going somewhere on Friday for sure.

Thanks again

hey Crawlerman, have you ever fished that pond down off 160th (just east of Cedar)? Not sure of the name of the pond, but it is at Galaxie (E/W).

EBass - if you have a boat or a buddy with a boat you may want to try Redwing... sounds like the fishing has been hot out there lately..

No. Spring Lake is about the fartherst south really fished thus far... Most of my pond fishing is in the Eagan area.

Okay, ya didn't e-mail me, so I'll put it up here for the lurkers to see, too. grin.gif

I don't know if the water is up enough for this place yet, but the Lake Orono Spillway in Elk River is my son's (4) favorite place to fish. Check the map and follow Main Street until you see it get near the lake's outlet. You can park at the power plant. Sunnies, rockbass, smallies, walleye, bullhead and northern have all come out of there for us. The locals say carp and channel cats at night, too.

I didn't post this yesterday 'cause after I posted that spot last fall a whole bunch of people appeared within the next week and the place looked like a dump. If ya'll go (anybody reading this) please C & R the big ones and please leave WITH trash, even if it's not yours. I was leery about posting this spot again - but there's a kid involved this time.

Ole - email [email protected] - I got more of exactly what you're looking for within 20 minutes of Anoka.

Thanks Aquaman,

I did send you an e-mail. For lake Orono, is the parking spot on the left side of hwy 10 as you cross the bridge?

Thanks again.

Nope. Other end of the lake. Gotta check a map - I found it accidentally driving around, but a map would've put me right on it. Again, it's no magic hole if the water is down too far. I haven't checked since ... two weeks ago, and it was down too far then.

On the map, look for the Mississippi, then the Elk - follow the Elk upstream to Orono, and that's the spillway.

I'm hoping to do an Adopt-a-River at that location and put up a trash can - but we'll see.

Good wink.gif

A lot of the smaller "childrens fishing" ponds should be open within a week or so; and crappies and sunnies should be active within a week of ice out. And you'd be suprised; I've pulled some decent fish out of small city/DNR funded ponds; not just sunnies; altough that's the major draw. They usually are well regulated, and most are stocked on a regular basis. I belive the DNR has a free map of shore fishing locations of ponds and small lakes that they stock. Getting one of them would be helpful. I'm not at all familiar with the Anoka area; but I know these exsist in all counties, and will be quicker to de-ice and get active fish.

Thanks Crawlerman,

I will check out the dnr web-site for that map.

Good Job Aquaman01. smile.gif That is a great idea about adopting a section!

fishnAddict.. Tonka Boy is going to take me out to Red Wing someday soon.

I'm hoping with my tax return I can get a little jon boat. I gotta to use the FL-18 in the summer!

Any ways, anyone know where Carp are biting? I asked on the Pool 2-9 too. I just want a nice fight for a change. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
EBass
