Here is my 7 pointer from area 343. Unfortunately we didn't have the camera in the field with us and it was going straight to butcher, so this is the best picture I have. This is also a personal best for me, after shooting 19 deer in my life (only the second with antlers).

My 2007 buck, only one in 7 years, passed a lot of small bucks, below 150 inches to harvest this 164&1/8 inch b&c buck [image]http://11-04-07_09041.jpg[/image]

cousin corey with his 2007 buck, 22.5 inside spread should gross around 180 B&C points [image]DSCN0890.jpg[/image]

Great bucks guys! Just wondering though, just because those bucks so unusually big for most of MN, where did you get them? Were you patterning these bucks, or was it just luck? Pretty amazing to see two bucks of that caliber killed by one family. I have personally never seen a buck that big in the wild, so I am just curious as to how you went about getting on those?

Congrats on those bucks! He had mentioned passing up all bucks under 150" for seven years I think. That has a lot to do with it. Hard to shoot a big buck like those if you shoot the little guys first. I'm sure there is more to their success than that but that's a big part of what I believe in.

That's what I was gonna say. I'm sure their hunting party is managing the land. It does make a difference. True fisherking?

Actually our group of 10 buddies that hunt together some but mostly apart have so far taken four over 150 inches this season. There is a lot of luck involved, but that the percent of luck is increased by letting the bucks mature. I passed on mine the last 2 seasons at 130-150 inches and was lucky to harvest him this year. Cory's was seen on trail cam, not noted in previous years. Far as I'm concerned we have the potential in mn to raise lots of big deer, and the only thing we are missing is age. If you want to shoot a big buck, the buck of a lifetime, you can't settle for a little one. I know they travel and the neighbors will shoot em and all the scenarios, but If I shoot a small buck, that's it for him. He will not get any bigger. If I pass on him and he is in the small percent that the neighbors don't kill, he can get bigger, and bigger and bigger. Note these are 4.5 -5.5 year old deer. It only takes a few years to see the results. Any buck in Mn given a few years will be a trophy. Bottom line shoot the little ones and you decrease your opportunity at a buck of a lifetime.

Shot this guy tonight with about 45 minutes of Shooting time left. First buck i have seen all year so i decided it was time.

He looks to have been a tough guy. 3 antlers broke off. THe little kicker is pretty cool. He weighed 135 lbs. Man does your heart race when you have to watch them work towards you for 10 minutes.

I watched him walk out of the can grass about 300 yrds away and work his way to 20 yards under my stand. He was heading to thick stuff so i shot him below me. Hit his spine and lungs and dropped dead. Not a bad way to end the gun season. And with all of the time i had in the stand i figured out this was my 20th deer ive shot.

Not the biggest or my biggest, but the nicest deer I have seen while on stand in the North woods and I have never shot a 10-pointer before.

I let this buck walk to within 20 yrds of me after deciding I was going to pass on him. While watching him I began to think about how disappointed my other dear would be (long story). Well at 70 yrds I had a change of heart and took him. It was really nice to spend the rest of the weekend with her though. First 11ptr.

OK I did not shoot these deer but they are some that I took pics of this summer in Ohio. Sorry they are not real good quality, I'll work on that.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
