Anyone going hunting?

Recommended Posts

Where are you headed? What have you seen?

I am heading the my brother-in-laws farm north of Perham. We seem to find deer there every year.

Next week and next weekend I am going to hunt some private land near Ulen. The area west of Ulen has had some nice deer there earlier this season -- I hope they stay close by.

Who else is going out?

I'm with you Brother. I'll be east of Frazee this weekend, up by Evergreen. Maybe I'll see you at the Wolf Lake Muni on Saturday night grin.gif

You going to be there on Sat. Night?

I will meet you there -- about 9 pmish -- we have milk those cows, you know. blush.gif

Not sure what time we'll be there, but I'll be looking for you. Last year when we were there, there wasn't too many cows. They had a band and I guess that pulls another class out of the woodwork.

I'll be hunting between Barnesville and Pelican Rapids. My last year there. The farmer sold it to the DRN recently and it will be public next year. It's next to Whiskey Lake, and no it doesn't taste like whiskey at all.

Glad you added that, otherwise, knowing me, I probably would have tried it... tongue.gif

Trouble just seems to follow a guy who's name is Hitman grin.gif

Seriously though, DH is right...be careful out there. Be sure of your target and anybody who may be beyond that target before you pull the trigger. I'm going to be one of those other guys out there and I don't like hearing lead wizzing over my head.

I shot a buck with my bow on friday, and a doe on saturday morning with riffle at a whole 15 yds. That really put the 25-06 to the test. grin.gif. I haven't fished for a while but while you were getting married i caught a few. wink.gif

Not sure what I would do with that. I know I would not mount it -- wink.gif

I think I would give it a beer.

Eye --

trouble does follow the Hitman.

I went to bed early on Sat. Night -- 9 p.m. I was out like a light. I stayed up and discussed the finer points of hunting and got 3.5 hours of sleep the night before. I was a tired puppy.

My Bro-in-law went to bed at 11 p.m. He said he heard something and thought I was dinging around and going out to my truck.

When I got up at 5 am I went to the bathroom and noticed that somebody left a deposit and did not flush or wipe. I thought that was odd. Then I went into the living room and the front door was open.

Strange.

Talked to my Bro-in-law and he said he heard the door open and thought it was me. My guess -- a drunk guy or one of those crazy dudes that work at the 24-hr dairy farm up the road. They milk like 2500 head -- they get some crazy dudes in there for the night shift.

So -- That is how people get killed -- they walk into people's homes after dark and use there facilities without announcing themselves.

Strange ...

Wasn't you was it Eye hunter?

No, it wasn't me. I was all the way over on Toad Lake, that's just too far for me to go to take a dump, even if it was for a good joke. I too was in bed by 9:30 on Saturday night, never made it to Wolf Lake all weekend. Boy we must be getting to be old men.... tongue.gif You know you're getting old when you would rather sleep than go out and party, and when you get up in the middle of the night, take a ____ and not remember it in the morning. grin.gif

I was out East of Hinkley hunting. Dropped a nice fat doe on opening day. Our party shot 9 and one guy shot a nice 10 pointer 200#er dressed. hmmmmm..... hitman sneaking in to someones place would definately beat the outhouse at deer camp at 35 degrees ...lol j/k. grin.gif

Went out this morning. Found that someone has been using my deer stand. They left a 5 gal pail up there. Kind of ticks me off. I don't get that many chances to go out, we've lost most of our hunting land due to the owner selling off chunks and a guy started bowhunting above my stand up to the opener. This little woodlot only holds a couple of deer and I usually need someone to kick some deer around. Everytime I turn around there's something new and stupid going on. Did miss a buck on Sunday, probably my only chance this year.

I know that I'm just easily irratable because I painted the house and only fished one day since Labor Day. Then I go hunting and feel like there's nothing left for me to do. I should just pound down a few beers and get over it but I just don't like beer!

Oh, and Hitman, maybe a bear doesn't &#$& in the woods?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
