How is the Bite on Sarah?

Posted

Did ok a couple of times last year I've been wondering this year as well. Fished it once a couple of months ago and got skunked. Was thinking about going today. If I make it I'll post results.

Posted

Didn't make it today. Went closer to home on Eagle. Caught 1 eye. Going to try to sneak out there tomorrow after work. Have you been out there?

Posted

Never tried Sarah later in the season, I've had some great luck there in the spring open water season though which leads me to believe that they're probably hungry now. I'd be interested in finding out how the bite is out there these days though.

just got home. Was nice out. I think there were only three of us on the lake and none of us were within 1/4 mile of eachother. Caught a few crappies 4-6:30. Nothing of any size. Mabey a few eaters. It usually takes a pretty decent fish for me to take home. I don't eat it but mabey a couple times a year and usually don't catch enough at any 1 time for a meal. Probably could've tonight

Was out there again yesterday. Had fish coming through about every half hour or so. Had to pick through them but went home with 7 and cought alot more. Was out from 11am-5pm. Still was a good time. One other house out until noon. Snow was blowing and drifted but no problem driving around. May be out again today. Red Dakota and Frabill Ranger XLTwin if anyone stops out.

Was out Sunday afternoon again. Hard time finding my spot from the day before with all the wind and drifting. Got close, drilled 2 holes, dropped the vex and had 20ft of fish (not depth) under the holes. Pulled up alot and kept few.

DEEP WATER. I have only fished right off the landing 1 time. That was at the beginning of the season and no one was driving out. I was next to a guy with a generator. I didn't even get a nibble. That is why it took me so long to get up the ambition to try again. To be fair I was strapped for time and only fished 2 hours. I have drilled a lot of holes some times and 1 or 2 on others. I go around the narrows. Depth around 30-40 ft.
I hope to be out there saturday afternoon or sunday morning. I haven't chased the fish and they have disappeared at 6:00pm every time no matter if there were a couple on the vex and at different depths as well.

Moby1-

Where about on Sarah are you fishing? I've never fished lake Sarah but want to give it a try this weekend. I've looked at a map of the lake and was wondering if the 35ft hole just out from the public landing was a good spot? Any help would be great. Good to hear your haveing some good luck out there.

Have the green light for saturday afternoon. First have to take the wife out for lunch (it's a small price to pay) and then I will be putting the hammer downt to sarah. Anyone want to join, come along. As usual, will have red dakota Frabil Ranger. Talked to DNR out there sunday and he said out of everyone he talked to around there no one was catching anything. I disagree. :+))

Going out around noon again if anyone wants to join.

Posted

Moby, are you going out on Sunday?

Posted

Unfortunatly unless something pops up to occupy the wife, I doubt it. Me another FM'er went out today. It was pretty sloppy although he made it out in a rear wheel drive car (not recommended). I caught one 12" and one 13" along with a ton 7"-9". I was out 11:30 - 6pm. Action was fairly steady ALL DAY and a lot on the vex when I left. Quite a few other people out. If I can sneak away I will. It's a 25 mile drive so hard to sneak.
Good Luck

I think I might check out Sarah tomorrow, how do you get to the access from 55? Also, how did the ice look? Probably still drivable I assume?

Posted

HI
Take 55 west - co road 92. Take a left. Go over the tracks and take 2nd left (south lake sarah drive. Follow that Until South lake sarah drive goes off to the left again (neighborhood and road is tar) follow that a little ways and I think the landing is the second left. I believe there is a sign. It is at the bottom of the hill. Melting snow is runnign off like a stream on to the ice so it's a big puddle. Freaky but was safe on sat.
Good luck

hey moby, thanks for the tips on sarah, or the information about your rig i should say. i was there on saturday and didn't have much luck, then came home read your post about what your truck and house look like, went back out on sunday and used your holes and had a great time. caught tons of fish, put em all back, and actually ran out of minnows. some of em were pretty nice sized too. thanks again, and im sorry you had to do all the leg work for my fun, but i appreciate that. hey did you lose you slush scooper by chance, i found one where you were the day before. thanks

If its fairly new with a green handle it's most likley mine. I have to look. You should've stopped over on Sat. A guy , his kid, and father stopped and fished for a while with us before we left. What were you driving. Looks like rain and or snow wed-Friday. I may get off around 1:30 tomorrow and head out there. It may be last hurrah unless i get a pair of rubber boots. I'll post tomorrow when I find out if I can go. Anyone that wants to join come on.
Got your ears on tim?? Still don't know about weekend. First see how tomorrow goes

i drive a red chevy w/ topper. let me know if and when your going, i've got time and i could meet you out there. this scoop had a blue or green handle and a red scoop.

Truck is loaded up, vex is on the charge, and enough cash for bait. As of now I am planning on leaving meeting in NE MPLS at 1:30-2at the latest. Be on the lake as soon as I can get there.

Well, a few of us made it out last night. Caught quite a few. Most 8"-9.5". loc9fisher got a nice 12" white a little before I left. Nice Fish. How did you guys do after I left? Don't know if I'll make it back out. supposed to rain rest of week and I'm heading to Red on Friday!!!!

Posted

Moby,
We didn't fish very late... Everyone had a nice mess of fish... loc9fisher was still out there when we left, not sure how he ended up...

We were still marking fish when we left, but they weren't as agressive as they were before dark. We were still getting a few after dark, but not as hot and heavy as it was up until dark.

Was on Sarah last weekend. Still 15+ inches of solid ice. Alot of slop ontop.

Sunnies were real slow. However, caught alot during the winter.

Great lake for bass in the summer. No idea about wallyes.

moby, addict, it was nice meeting you two. i stayed out until about 9 and once i switched to waxies the bite didn't "fire up" but i was catching fish consistantly.

loc9
Did you catch anymore like the big one after we left?

I have talked with you about Eagle Lake (Maple Grove) before. I was wondering if you could help me find some crappies, either on Eagle or Sarah. I might go out this weekend.

Thanks

Posted

Haven't been out on Eagle since I talked to you. I've been doing too well on Sarah. I's like to go but red lake is calling my name this weekend. If You go out there, when you go onto the lake head to the east toward the narrow spot. Stop a couple of hundred yards before the narrows and about 50-100yards north of the point. Look for the open holes. Sorry if I can't think of a better way to describe it. I'd give you the gps coordinates but dont have them on hand. Good luck. Love to hook up for some off ice on eagle sometime. Don't know if I'll get anymore icefishing in after this weeekend.

Posted

moby, didn't catch any more big ones, was out on thursday and the crappies are still there but it was pretty hard to catch em. biggest one on thursday was 10", most of them were only about 6 or 7 though. gonna go out today at about 3 or 4 and sit until I get tired or the fish go away. as long as im marking fish i don't mind sitting, even if the bite slows. gonna bring more minnows this time, always seems like right when i leave only have about a dozen or so left and if im sitting for a long time i don't want to run out. good luck on red this weekend moby, and don't forget "BAM"!

I went out with a buddy tonight around 630 and left around 9. We tried 10-20 feet with no luck before moving to one of the 40 ft holes. There we marked a few fish and managed to catch 12. Most were around 9 inches, biggest was 12. (best non-red lake crappie ive caught this year) All were black crappies.

Posted

I went out again today 530-8, caught 20 crappies, (3 were whites). fished 44 feet. lots of fish on the vex. they seemed to bite well the whole time i was there, especially before the sun went down.

BAM!!
Sounds like it's ok. How is the ice? Didn't get anything at Red this weekend. Had some fun trying to baja the way through the 100 yard mudhole and (It's up to your knees and we were in a 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive van) crappy ice for a ways at Hillmans. Between Tim and his buddy, only three crappies and 1 eye. My catch - perch. Was a great time anyways. Thanks Tim. Had a heck of a game feed on the lake- venison, elk, burgers. I haven't eaten that much food in 3 days let alone 1 day. Thanks again.
Hows the ice out there. I hear it was pretty warm yesterday?

Dang, this is like a free meal on Lakestreet in Mpls.  I didn't know this many folks were still on the site until someone said "Free raffle drawing"  🤣 🤣

Nah, I'm not changing my guess. It's more fun to make early predictions and see how far off I am.   I'll turn on the hair dryer and see if it helps.

Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.  Also, since SkunkedAgain was the originator of this competition and was the 1st person to guess, I will give him until Friday to change his prediction if he wants to (although he may regret if the ice goes out on April 18th).  After him, no more "changes" will be allowed on my board.   Lots of "good" open dates available for those that have not predicted yet.  Updated board below:

https://www.timberjay.com/stories/moccasin-point-upgrade-has-longtime-users-concerned,22802   Moccasin Point upgrade has longtime users concerned DNR hopes to get major remake of key access underway later this year Posted Thursday, March 20, 2025 10:36 am   Marshall Helmberger LAKE VERMILION— With funding finally in place, the Department of Natural Resources is planning to move forward with an estimated $2-plus million renovation of the Moccasin Point landing, and users of the site say they’re concerned about the changes. The landing has been heavily used for decades by anglers, Boundary Waters visitors, residents of nearby islands and other remote-access properties on Lake Vermilion and, perhaps most critically, by emergency responders for everything from fire to medical response. Moccasin Point has also been a protected harbor for private barges loading and unloading as they service the many water-access properties in the area. Sarah Schmidt, who spends summers with her husband Jake at their cabin on nearby Pine Island, said there’s a lot at stake for people who depend on the landing. “A lot of people have designed their dream home around having access to that landing,” she said. “People need propane, they need lumber, and if they need to install a septic system, they need lots of gravel,” she said. For the many hundreds of island or other water-access property owners on the lake, all of that material comes by barge. Moccasin Point is particularly well suited for such use, since it is arguably the most protected harbor on Lake Vermilion, with islands and mainland protecting it from wind from just about any direction. It’s also centrally located on the sprawling lake and close to concentrations of island homes and cabins. Scott Kelling, northeast regional manager for DNR Parks and Trails, said the plans for the reconstruction of the landing are still being finalized, but insisted they will take into account the unique mix of recreational and commercial use of the landing, including use by all three of the barging companies that service customers on the lake. According to Kelling, the remake of the landing will include removal of the old pier and the reconstruction of a new one in nearly the same location. “The new pier will serve the same function,” said Kelling, and will include an additional ramp that will be dedicated for barge loading and off-loading. Kelling said an engineer’s inspection of the existing pier determined it was near the end of its useful life, although Schmidt said she thinks that opinion reflects the DNR’s desire to remove the structure rather than its actual condition. Kelling acknowledges that it’s not the only reason for replacing the structure. “With our redesign it’s just not in the right location,” he said. Adequate parking is another major concern of longtime users of Moccasin Point. Tim Logan, whose family has owned island property near the landing since the 1950s, said plans the DNR had shared a few years ago seemed to show less parking than is typically used at the site. Schmidt notes that during high-traffic weekends, the parking area is frequently full and overflow parking can extend for hundreds of feet along Moccasin Point Rd. She said she counted 163 vehicles parked at the landing at one point last Memorial Day weekend and said there are routinely 90-100 vehicles during the summer season. Many of the regular users of the landing, particularly those on island properties, use the site for long-term parking of their vehicles for days, weeks, or months at a time. That’s unusual at public landings, which are typically limited to day use. Kelling said the DNR is making an exception to that rule for Moccasin Point, given the many varied uses of the unique property. “Overnight parking will be allowed,” he said. Kelling said the current plan will allow parking for a bit over 100 vehicles, which is more than some original plans for the site. “We’re doing everything we can to maximize the parking there, at some considerable expense,” he said. Longstanding issues Kelling said the DNR’s plan for reconstruction is motivated by a desire to “manage the site more responsibly on a number of fronts.” The DNR acquired the site in 2008 and had planned to undertake reconstruction of the landing back in 2013 but lacked the funds at the time to accomplish the work. The funding was approved in 2023 and the DNR has been working on design of the project ever since. According to Kelling, the site has operated essentially as a “free-for-all” for years, with uses and resource impacts that aren’t typically permitted at DNR-managed access points. “There are currently a number of transgressions out there,” said Kelling, including long-term storage of personal property and building materials. He said the site, which slopes toward the lake, also contributes large amounts of sediment into Vermilion during heavy rainfall. “We need to better manage the stormwater,” said Kelling. “Currently, a lot of sediment and other things end up in the lake when it rains.” Schmidt questions whether the change will be an improvement, since the DNR’s reconstruction of the site will convert the existing grassy hillside that currently serves as the site’s parking lot into a paved parking area. Kelling said the parking area will be leveled before being paved and that stormwater will be directed into one of two planned stormwater ponds in order to contain sediment. Schmidt claims the ponds will become a mosquito breeding ground. Kelling said he expects the final design will be completed soon and he is expecting to hold an open house in early summer so interested users can see what’s planned for the site. He expects actual construction to begin sometime in October if all goes as planned. That initial work will include blasting of some underlying bedrock in order to level the site. But most of the work will take place in 2026, he said, and during that period, it may be difficult to maintain public use of the site, although he said use of the site by barges should still be possible, with potentially some minor delays. But he said other users of the site may want to explore other access options for that summer. Kelling said he hopes to have more information on that at the open house later this year. “A goal of the open house is to really share the timeline and alternatives for users,” he said. “They might need to park somewhere else in 2026.”
