Hammer handle, my spear is designed with a thread in bushing at the very end of my handle. It is designed so one ties a knot in the rope and then theard the rope through the bushing. the bushing screws into the end of to handle pushing the knot inside the handle. only a single rope comes straight out the back of the handle. NO external knots in my rope. Helps my spear through straighter. Now if i had better aim.

I used a weighted and old spear that goes as straight as an arrow. I aim for the neck of the northern to "ruin less meat". I wil even spear some in the head...the spear is so sharp and heavy that it goes right through the skull. My father sharpens then down to a fine point.

My wife starting spearing two years ago and thought it was "easy" as she nailed her first two fish. Now she knows differently. She only spears "straight down".

My dad fishes more in the winter than the summer. He used to farm, and had a lot more free time in the winter than the summer. With a small farm and 5 boys, we ate a lot of fish in the winter. He would go to the lake 3-7 times a week...and get 1-3 northerns each time. He rarely got skunked. Fish (northerns) and toast for breakfast was a common meal for us. Now he is retired and goes about every day and has just as good luck as he had "back then".

My nephew asked him "How many northerns have you speared in your life?" He answered, "Well, it has to be in the thousands." I am positive it is.

No wonder he is so good. I don't do too shabby either, but in over 15 - 20 years of keeping track of spearing percentages...I have YET to beat him. Kind of unbelievable.

Wow, I talked to my dad just now...and he missed another northern spearing!! I have a chance this year...I have to get out there. To be considered a contest, you have to spear at least 20 times....

about 7in. of ice. The water wasnt crystal clear but was spearable it was a lake we havent speared at in about 5 years. So it was pretty good.

This is my biggest pike ever, 6 1/2 lbs. I got it this morning around 9:45. I was really itching to get back out since yesterday morning I decided to try the fake decoy for the last hour, but I didn't have to sit long. I had the red and white pike down for a while but nothing came in, so I switched to the perch. In just a couple minutes a 2-3 pounder came in, I missed luckily it would have been my 3rd. Not more than 2 minutes later a 27 incher came in. I have never been really sold on fake decoys but getting two of my biggest pike ever has made me a believer.

TDH nice picture. If I’m seeing right it looks like you nailed him right behind the head! Did you hit it with center tine in the backbone? No meat ruined there.

Yeah I did get it right behind the head but missed the backbone and my aim was a little off so I didn't get the center tine in it. Was one of the easiest shot I ever had, she came in from the right and stop a few inches away from the decoy. It kind of surprised me, I took my eyes off the hole for like 2 seconds and looked back and there it was.

TDH, Nice Fish!!!! I always use a fake decoy along with a live decoy, it give you something to look at with the live decoy and also add some color to attack some fish in with the fake decoy. Nice fish and good throw!!!!

Well as you all know, Myself and Central Bassman were up on Andrusia spearing for 4 days, and we had some great success. We saw a ton of fish each day. Here are some photos from the trip.

This picture is of the inside of my house. You can see that the hole is monster, with carpet on the floor. The hole is self, is 50 inches wide, and 40 inches deep.

Bass-n-Spear Them are some nice pics,they show the struggle you had with the slush but also the rewards of all the work involved in spearing!How deep was that 13 lb when you tagged him? Was he moveing or sitting there eyeballing your decoy?

The 13 lber was spear in 11 feet of water. Right on the edge of the weed line, There was 3 other small northerns in the hole when it came in. It came in real slow from the top of the hole and came right into the center of the hole. It was going after the live decoy but wasn’t moving fast at all. It was an easy throw for that big fish!!!! It was Bass N Spear dad that got it!!!

There was three other northerns in the hole when that one came in?!! That's awsome!!! I've had two in the hole at once a bunch of times and three in the hole a few but never four. That's pretty sweet. Nice pictures also and congrats guys on what sounds like a great trip.

i didnt go there, becuase we had such great luck on andrusia that i didnt think it was worth packing it up and going for a day. I need to get up there, might be next year, but i will get there sooon.
