Hey all Southern Burb's Fishin freaks,

I am taking a friend of mines kid out ice fishing for his first time. They live on Fish Lake south of Spring Lake and Prior and I was curious if anybody had any info on the lake. Would like to show the kid a good first day. Any info would be appreciated on where (I assume the hump on the east side) or what depths and what was being used. Thanks in advance.

Fish lake doesn't have many houses on it anymore. They had a little fishing tourney a couple of weeks ago, so most everyone pulled their houses. Just go straight out from the landing and fish 15 to 20 feet. Be prepared to move around to find fish.

I fished there for the first time the weekend after the tourney. We were set up in 22ft and had crappies move thru at 12-17ft down. We drove straight out from the access, and I set up in-between the houses that were on the left of the road and the area where the tourney took place. I don't know if the tourney area is still visible, but it was easy to tell where it was when I fished.

Thanks guys,
I will give it a shot and hopefully create another junky...he's really excited to get out.

Good Luck all.

The best place to put your kid on action on this lake is just past the first point on your left from the access, keep drilling holes about 75 yds from shore and I wouldn't go any deeper than 10ft. You will get fish, but no gaurentee on size and wait till the first bass is on his line (yes there out of season but you can't stop them from biting).

If you want to catch crappies w/out much size go on the north end by all the houses. The hump is good for some crappies and a few walley. But it is a lot harder to fish. With a kid with I would consider the first option to keep him interested. You will have to pick thru a lot of them but it is still a good time catching them.

Thanks, Yes, I don't care too much about the size just want to teach him some basics and show him that fishing is more fun than video games. Thanks for the info. Are the Crappies biting on Waxies or minnows?

Both Carl's (McMahon lake, just east of fish) and Fish lake offer a lot of action, although you'll need to do a lot of sorting. A lot of bluegills and crappies.

I stopped out on Fish this AM and drilled 6 holes from 15 to 22 feet. Not a thing on the Vex. I did fish for an hour without a bite. The Vex never lies! There were only a few houses still out there and they were scattered. I would try Carl's to give your kid some time on the ice.

i agree - carls will give you the most action.

Yea, it seems as though fish died down some... The last time out we started at fish and ended up at Carl's. Did better at Carl's. The best bite for everything was during the day - they shut down near dark for some reason (I think because so many people came out to fish the crappies). We caught crappies, bluegills, and Northern and saw bass on the camera.. ohh. and we caught a BIG shiner.. Fish were all on the small side, but a good place to bring a kid fishing..

Hey, I caught a good 7" to 8" shiner while I was on Carl's last week too! Was a Golden shiner. I can cath crappies at sunrise and sunset on Carl's. Never much for size, but good numbers some times.

Hey all,

Thanks for your help. Our trip was good and bad...we had to go to Fish Lake cuz one of my friends other kids got sick so we had to stay close to home. We did not catch a single fish but, none the less the kid had a great time especially after I taught him how to use the VEX. Thanks for all your help. Wish I could have put him on some fish but, that is the way it goes and he was a good sport about it. Again I really appreciate all your recommendations. WE tried everywhere from the bar into the shallows from depths from 20 to 5 didn't even mark a fish.

Good luck all and thanks again for the help.

Barely had time and data to post a few random daily pics!  😄   Iffen you’re self banned, how’d ya know? 😉   Sunday - Tuesday hunt near Yankton, SD.  We found ourselves there between two of the big pushes north.  Adults first, pushing the ice line north, slipped through a couple days before we got there and the second juvie push held up by the storm that went through the night we traveled.  Our best day was Monday.  Sunny and warm with a nice south wind.  Day 3 was cool with a stiff northeast wind bringing in another storm.     A select few groups did well with birds coming off Lewis and Clark lake but we weren’t in their path.  We packed up early and hit the road.  We headed north and found them between Brookings and Watertown.  Saw 100’s of thousands at the ice line.

Crazy, about 50 Robin's hit our yard!  Not sure what their eating but none are in any of the neighbors yards around us?  Had to cut video down so it would run.  20250319_175454.mp4
