Wondering if anybody has seen any woodcock moving yet? Should be showing up here in SE MN in the next week or so, particularly with this latest cold snap and snow up north.

Uplander has saw them up close and personal. We must have flushed about 15 of them in 30 minutes on Sunday.

Awe yes. The woodcock. Funny looking birds, but great for pointers of all kinds and fun to shoot!!! This should be the week with the cold snap and wind out of the North-North West they should be coming through thick. Get out there and have some fun...Watch out for early seaon doe hunts going on..Check your area and be careful..Wear lots of orange!!! Good luck! uplander

Anyone have an favorite woodcock recipes that they don't need to keep a secret? I pheasant hunt out by the border on SD and there's a cottonwood forest that usually has a bunch the first week of pheasant hunting. I always make sure to bring a few 7 1/2 loads for the spot...

I usually will pan fry them, or bake them in certain wild rice soups or gravy as I do with grouse. Just thinking about trying something new this year. Much darker that grouse meat...but still tasty!

I had one land 4 ft away from me while duck hunting the other day. They sure are interesting to watch hop around and probing that beak into the soil. Very interesting birds.

Woodcock migration is in full swing. Up here in Bemidji the Northern birds are really moving in, later than usual, but good numbers. Our locals should be on your doorstep!

As for a recipe, cut the meat off the breast and wrap it in bacon and sprinkle with onion flakes, throw it on kebobs and toss 'em on the grill. They're delish!

Don't forget the legs. Wood cock legs are all white meat, go figure. Not much there, but definitely tasty morsels.

Try Woodcock Rumaki

cut the breats in two.

Salt and pepper.

Wrap a strip of bacon around each piece with a couple sliced water chestnuts.

Spear with a toothpick.

Arrange in shallow baking dish.

Sprinkle with brown sugar.

Douse with a liberal amount of soy sauce.

Broil for 2-3 minutes until tops are turning brown.

Finish off by baking uncovered at 350 for 15 minutes.

You can also try smoking them. Yum!

If the weather stays this warm, they aren't gonna move and when we do finally get a cold snap there will be lots of woodcocksicles stuck to the ground!

How was the trip? I was on the lake Tuesday and the weather was as good as it gets!

For those looking for some decent perch they seem to be hanging in the reeds chasing crawfish and minnows.   Some real dandies in there if you're in the right patch of reeds.  Not many out on the flats yet.

Been a tough bite the last couple days for me. Catching a few here and there but no consistency. Caught fish on crawlers leechesand jigging raps but for the amount of fish I’m graphing not near enough catching All my bigger fish have came on the jigging raps. How is everyone else doing?

Tried my luck on Lory lake for some pan fish. trying to catch a meal. didn’t find any sunfish over 7” and a few 9” crappies. Not what I was expecting hoping for a little better. Might have to try a littler bigger lake for some better results.

Mmmmmmm~~~~ here's one for ya! For years we have been trying to get our fave Mayfly Rafts & Spikes into a booth at The State Fair. Rafts = ~~~  Honey Waffle coated with Dark Chocolate Glaze n Peanut Butter then sprinkled with Frozen Real Maple Syrup dipped Mayflys.  To die for. Spikes  =  ~~~ Deep Fried Triple Thick Cut of F&D Smoked Bacon dipped into Smoked flavored Pancake Batter an dipped in Maple Syrup then rolled in pile of frozen Hickory smoked MayFlys. Both Killer Pak~ons seved on a stick or in a Deep Fried Walleye Belly Fillet. Power good experience that takes you places you never been before'!! : )   Keep on rocken!   T

@cherokee muskie-mike is spot on the dog food... When I use to camp at hoodoo point campgrounds I tend to use nightcrawlers if I have any to spare (in a minnow trap). Caught too many rusties while fishing.
