Twins roster moves...

The Yeti

Recommended Posts

The Twins announced today that they have outrighted outfielders Lew Ford and Josh Rabe and infielder Tommy Watkins, removing them from their 40-man roster at the risk of losing them to free agency.

The other move, Luis Rodriguez claimed by the Padres on waivers. I disagree with this move. In my opinion, he's a great utility player.

I agree I liked Luis Rodriguez, but how many utility players do we need? We need to get our position players set.

Luis was able to play a lot of positions but he is Nick Punto with a lesser glove, lesser speed the same batting average. Hasn't this forum spent the summer ripping on Punto and now we want to romaticize about losing Luis Rodriquez?

Rodriguez could hit home runs, you forgot about that point. Plus the fact he was a waiver wire pick up, we didn't get anything for him

The only one of the 4 that surprises me is Watkins. I thought he showed some promise, and they'd give him a shot.

Rodriguez was odinary or less, not hard to replace him.

I,m thinking they realized Casilla's major questionmarks, so they will keep him around to fill in, pinch run , and work with. He has a ton of potential, but he didn't show much in the "head department" so far.

I look for Garrett Jones to stick as a back-up 1b and of, Bucher to get a shot at 3b (glove seemed weak though) or a trade there for a pitcher.Doesn't Chipper Jones play 3b? That could be interesting...

I don't like Kubel in lf, but I think they are going that direction.

Guerrero's success was a shock to me this year. I didn't think they would even keep him, but they moved him to set-up

man.

The year Rincon had makes him expendable, but I think he will stick, at least until they see how Crain is doing.

Could be an interesting off-season. grin.gif

He hit 2 home runs this year. Yes, he did not get a lot of AB, but why was that. What did you think we would get for him? Probably not much more than some 28 year old AA guy.

Hopefully Smith will do more than fill the open spots with anothe Batista type. All we did was go rid of border line players Rabe and Ford couldn't keep healthy. Rodriguez gone opens the spot for Bucher.

Rodriguez now has like 5 major league HR's & when he initially came up a few years back I believe had zero or 1 minor league HR. He's not a power hitter & he's very slow. I liked the guy well enough, but there's plenty more like him. He had no significant value to us. Ford's got a little ability, but he's a space cadet. Rabe's never likely to be more than a backup.

Activated SS Alejandro Machado from the 60-day disabled list and sent him outright to Triple-A Rochester; Sent C Matthew LeCroy outright to Triple-A Rochester. He refused the assignment and is a free agent.

I guess that's the end of LeCroy.

So in reality, the moves made so far were getting rid of nothing. Fringe back-up players at best.

It wouldn't be the first "end of LeCroy." As much as I like Big Country, I hope he doesn't come back. He is terrible as a catcher and not the answer for a DH.

Give the poor guy a break. When he did catch on a somewhat regular basis, I don't remember the defense being that bad. The arm was always weak but he could call the game. When he was allowed to gget a string of at-bats in, he could show a little power. Even as bad as you think he was, he DID make it to the majors. Better than I did.

cant agree more. The guy is not a great plater at all. He could hit the long ball, but that was about it.

I'd pay to see that! Not that I'm in love with the guy's game but his time in Minnesota was hit and miss, no pun intended. They told him he'd be a DH and work on the hitting, but turn around and the DH role was being filled by rehab players or platooned. He just seemed to be set up to struggle.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
