It was a tough morningn the birds did not decoy well till later in the morning we found ourselfs birdless till about 9:AM lots of birds flying but they where decoy shy, we still managed 4 bills and 2 redheads , passed on a ruddy that landded in the deaks and missed a green head that had 9 lives and a couple other long shots but after about 5-6 years of not hunting waterfowl it felt great to finally scratch that itch!!!heres a pic grin.gifDSCN0543.jpg

Anybody else have a Browning BPS that looks like that? My first attempt at changing the look. Much easier maintenance than the basic wood and steel.

This next one is in a canola field that Canadas absolutely love at this time of year in the South Interlake north of Winnipeg. That's a fiver for the old man with the BPS and only 2 with a bunch of empty hulls for the youngster with the Winchester.

Anybody else think this is an Aleutian Goose? We shot one more like this (with an even more solid white band below it's neck) and there definately different from the cacklers we got.

I tell you what... Great Photos everyone!!

I really don't think you can take a bad waterfowling photo. Every photo tells some kind of story and truly is unique. Whether its a dog, duck, limit of ducks, young kid, corn field, slough, sunrise, frost, ice, duckboat, tailgate, etc.

They all capture the moment and tell a story!

Thanks for sharing everyone!

Hard 2 say, I thought the little white stripe was still supposed 2 be on the black of the neck.

Its hard to tell by the way you have the bird laying breast down. I highly dooubt that it is and Aleutian goose but rather a richardson. Here is a pic of an Aleutian cackler!

Aleutians have a definate white ring around their neck. Nice kill none the less though!

How well does your son handle that gun? I have a son his age. Is it a 20 or 12 and is it a youth gun? We were up at LOTW and my son was pestering a couple guys cleaning ducks and he thinks he wants to go next year but those waterfowl loads can be tough

Its a remington youth junior 20 ga. He shoots 3" #4 and #2s for waterfowl. I asked them if they kick and he said its no different than shooting short grouse loads.

He's pretty good with it. Carries it all day long. Does everything himself, loads unloads, etc.

He's about 94 lbs.

He did fine with it last year also when he was 8.

Some ducks from last Saturday. 2 best ducks are not pictured. A full plummage greenwing and hooded merganser. We have been seeing a lot of full plummage greenwings this year kinda strange.

I figured I would put a few "hunt trip photos" showing the entire process of one of our fun ringbill shoots. We ended up shooting 27 ringies and 1 teal for 6 guys and two mornings. No limits, but plenty of shooting. No lost birds, and all were shoot right in the dekes.

First, the morning. Foggy and little wind, but the jerk string worked wonders. We had about the same amount of dekes out to the left of the camera position, total of about 4-5 dozen ringbill dekes.

Second is the post hunt celebration and gear collection zone. Notice the two Puddlers, best things ever!

resize800_IMG_8593.jpg

Third is a cool pic of some of the ducks near the fire.

resize800_IMG_8599.jpg

Fourth is a pic of all of us and some ducks with my bro (HugoBox) and his buddy's crappies they caught from teh kids paddleboat! ha! Beautiful Saturday, 2nd weekend of duck hunting.

resize800_IMG_8614.jpg

Last is of the cleaning of the game. The eats afterwards was fantastic.

resize800_IMG_8615.jpg

Got up the next morning and shots the next 15 of the ducks. Great weekend, and it was proof that the whole weekend was fun, not just the shooting of the ducks. But that was fun too, oh yeah smile.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
