First trip to Cass - 1 week and counting

Recommended Posts

One week from this very moment I will be spending my first morning on Cass (or Androsia), and I have to admit.... I feel like a 5 year old waiting for Mom and Dad to wake up on Christmas morning! Is it alright for a 32 year old man to feel like a little kid? blush.gif

And one week from this evening, Mr. Brian Jones will be showing me the ropes. Windy just raves about Brian, so hopefully with his know-how and few prayers to the fishin gods, we'll get into a nice musky or a few walleyes. grin.gif And, dare I hope, Brian will arm me with enough info to give the wife and I the ability to catch fish throughout the remainder of our stay.

The 16th is my wife's birthday, so we'll be going out for supper that night. The restaurant thread in this forum will no doubt come in handy for picking a place to celebrate.

6 days, and counting! I have a feeling the next few days will go by very slowly.... I shouldn't be so anxious grin.gif

Next week, if any of you see a white and maroon Yar-Craft Michigan 1950, with a blonde lady in the passenger seat and a guy with a silly grin from ear to ear at the wheel, stop by and say "hey!".

Yes, it is normal. I will be heading up this Saturday as well. I'm so excited that I'm already losing sleep! So you aren't alone. What resort are you staying at? I just might see ya up there. This is only my second time up there so I'm still learning the ropes. I might book a trip with Brian as well.

Wad,

Be sure to ask Brian about the "Windy" special. He will take care of you. You will not be sorry that you booked him. He will not only put you on the fish but will show you how to fish. I used to use a bullit weight and a spinner with a minnow and Brian turned me on to the walleye wonders of using a bottom bouncer and a crawler harness. My walleye to northern ratio has increased nearly 600% in the 6 years I have been using Brian. I always bring in the most walleye in our family and that streak has been going for 6 years now. I give all the credit to Brian. I hope you are taking your wife with you on the trip with Brian, he does great with women. He has turned my 27 year old daughter into a walleye machine. This year he put her on a 13.5 inch perch as well! Enjoy and tell Brian I said Hi!

PS Go with The Peppercorn in Bemidji and tell Gody, the hostess that Windy says Hey!

We're staying at Finn n Feather. It's up to the boss-lady whether or not she wants to come along with me and Brian, but I hope she decides to come along.

Because of what I've read on the restaurant thread, I was leaning towards the Peppercorn for the wife's birthday. But another evening we are gonna have to visit the mexican restaurant you mentioned (T Juans, or something like that). I LOVE mexican food! grin.gif

Darn! Still six days to go.... grin.gif "The waiting is the hardest part"

(Notice the signature change... you can call me Wade instead of Wad wink.gif)

If I remember right, you have to save this pic to your pc, put it on your photobucket, and get it into your profile on FM???????

or go onto the Baseball thread "Calling Gene Gene the Cubbie.." and go about 15 posts back to see the pic of the emblem to use.

I highly recommend the Park Avenue meal at T Juans - i am heating up my second meal of loft-overs from the huge portion!!

Oh yeah - they not only have the best margaritas in town, but the best long islands in my opinion as well!

Clueless,

You forgot about their chips! Are they the best chips ever or what? Not greasy, almost taste baked but not whimpy. My wife says they are a little too salty for her but that just makes you drink more of their terriffic margaritas. Key buy is the happy hour where you can score 27 oz beauties for only $5.

Getting there is another thing. The best way is to turn onto 4th street from the lake and go till you hit the dead end. You turn left on the street just before the dead end, not sure what the street name is but you can see T Juans from the intersection. If you get lost, it is about a block from the Post Office and is on the same street as the Post Office. I went with the #15 Combo, I think, with a Chile Rellano, taquito, tostada and an enchilada. I know that I took half the dinner home and had it for lunch the next day! What a bargain. Enjoy!

Geno,

Don't stare at it too long, I have embedded subliminal pictures of a nude Hawk Harrellson in the C and if you look at it for more than 20 seconds you will see the Hawk a Roo in his full glory! LOL

Hey Clark,

Sorry I did not get a chance to stop by and chew the fat with you this year. It seems I get busier and busier each year. The four grand kids kept me hopping pretty good this year. I think I need a vacation from my vacation, LOL!

Man, who ordered the extra heat my first week up there? When I saw the report that it was going to be in the mid to high 90's with heat index over 105 I was wishing I had my daughter's old A Frame with the AC instead of our new cabin. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the season, you seem to be in a good groove right now and lots of people are talking about the great improvements you have made since taking the Shoe over. Some of our neighbors, The Keane's stayed at your place, they played poker with us Wednesday night while we babysat when the women played Bingo. I can't complain, my wife won $525 and my daughter won $240. You got to love women who earn their keep, LOL!

Talk to you soon, my friend. 49 weeks and counting until Cass Lake 2008.

I want to say between 4-6 but it might be 2-6, not sure. Didn't plan it, it just happened. Might be worth a call since you save about $2.50 on each Grande margarita.

well boys, fishin on androsia is tough. yesterday i managed two keeper eyes and a handfull of hammerhandles.

When the storms blew in last night, we headed for T Juans. Good stuff!

is anything going on someplace on Cass? I would sure like to find a few more eyes, and i am gonna head ovaer that way today.

The wife and I will also be heading out with Brian Jones on Cass tonight, pretty anxious for thatr as well.

Thanks!

Wade,

Tell Brian I said hi. Also, looking for those eyes can be tough when the storm blows in. Seems like they go crazy biting before but then they go stale for a half day or so after. Sometimes you can try live bait a little deeper after the storms or you can pull cranks a little shallow after the storm...Or you can just wait to go out with Brian and let him figure it out, LOL. On Cass, I usually like to try over by the dam by Chippewa Paws (not a bad place to stop for lunch. New owners are from Illinois and are nice folks, Brian eats there and talks to them, good Italian Beef sandwich, not sure about their hours this year though) in about 15-20 feet. Also hit Deadmans Bar, windward side and you can try O'Neils Point. Good Luck

So Wade,

Did I tell you Brian was DA MAN of Cass Lake???

Nice pics, glad Brian was able to turn you on. Pass the word when others ask about him on our site. I really would like to see him grow his business. He is a young family man and deserves all the good things that we can bring him by helping us with the good things we want up at Cass....FISH!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
