There is an excellent bite going on the west side on the Commander bar. I know a couple a guys that boated some real fatties there last week! I would hit it in the "low light" periods for sure. Best baits were windsor cokes and bud lights!

the bass are on the flats i would assume. its been a couple weeks but towards the night they should be hitting topwater, along with the early mornings. If the sun is beating down attempt texas rigs under the docks. might pull out a few. good luck

I tend to stay away from the commander..anything you catch from there isn't worth eating...but I did have some luck this past weekend just south of Lincolns point, there is a nice drop before you get to the marked boueys...caught about 5 keepers and a few smaller eyes, I was fishing between 30 and 40 fow, caught one as deep as 60 while my boat was being blown across the lake!

Philly,

Just make sure to use a leader to protect your lure at the Commander! What were the fish biting on out deep, redtails, leeches or crawlers?

Thanks for the advice I heard the night bite is really picking up there now! Well I would suggest using the thickest leader available..I'd maybe even go with a deep sea fishing leader...you can never be too safe! Umm I seemed to have the best luck with leaches..I bought some redtails but once you put them on the hook and drop em down there dead in the first 2 minutes so I got sick of wasting my money on those..plus every walleye I filleted up most had leaches in them

Hey heading up to the cabin this weekend..just wondering how the fishing has been as of late? What have been the best depths for locating the walleyes? Have they moved in shallower now that the weather has cooled off alittle?? Any advice would be appreciated thanks!

Our guides had some great trips up there recently. Many of the walleyes were 17-18 inches. Lindy rigs and redtails in 21-28 feet of water.

Water temps are 68-70. Gettin some cool nites. If your to cheap to use redtails, I did get a couple wallys trolling shad raps in the evening near the sunken islands, lots of bass hittin the raps too, some decent size.

Anyone have a prediction on the fishing from Sept. 28 thru Oct. 5? My dad, Brother and I are heading up to Breezy Point for some fishing. I've heard plenty of stories, but you guys sound like you what your talking about! Any help would be SWEET! -Jeff

thats usually an excellent time. The water temps are down and you can get into some nice wallys. Redtails work good. They can be deep, caught them as deep as 55'. Also other species like bass, crappies, and slimers are usually hittin. Pelican is an under rated bass lake. There is some good sized bass in there.

Crooked...it all depends on what you like to catch, I mainly fish walleye out of Pelican and I presume by the time of year they most likely will be around 18-25 fow that is if we have typical sept weather or not. Pelican has a lot of structure, your best bet is to find a steep drop or a sunken island. Lindy rigs with redtails have worked best for me.

Thanks Roger and Phillydog! We predominantly fish for 'eyes and pike. We'll try Pelican for 3 or 4 days, if the fishing is good we'll stay, if not we'll head up to Turtle Lake.... Love the smallies. We usually troll structure w/lindy rigs and leeches or redtails... How are the pike for size on Pelican???? Thanks again! -Jeff

You can catch a lot of 3-4 lbs Pike. I would say that the biggest I have caught on the lake was about 37". I catch bigger pike ice fishing and I don't know why.

I've fished Pelican quite a few times and I have to say that at first the amount of structure on the lake can be a little overwhelming. Where do you even start. I have had my best luck late in September off Lincoln Point (steep drop) and the midlake hump (NW corner of it) but it seems every time I'm up there the wind is kicking up fierce and my small boat with matching small motor has a hard time staying on top of fish.

The lake is really shallow. I have caught a lot of fish right around Gooseberry Island. I have a cabin on the lake and have done very well pulling crankbaits this time of year. Right in the 10-14ft of water range. That way you can hit all the structure. You will pick up walleyes, pike and a lot of rock bass.

I have that same problem..fishing off Licoln point and the wind! I find my spot and don't even have enough time to drop my line and I'm fishing in 60 feet! I only have a little black 14 footer and when the wind and waves pick up I'm screwed..when that happens I either find shelter in a bay or try trolling the breaks..pretty much all you can do with what ya have

We just got back Saturday morn. from Breezy Point...... Had one heck of a time up there. The weather was rough on a couple days, but overall a great trip! Brought home our limit of 'eyes and caught plenty. The bass in that lake are real toads!!!! We had several over 4 pounds. The pike seemed a little small, but caught plenty of them too.

The lake is a good one, and some of the fish stayed deep! We caught half a dozen 'eyes in 50'-60' of water north of gooseberry isl....... Lots of structure! Thanks again guys- We tore 'em up! Oh yeah, the bite was on at the Commander too.....LOL! Jeff

Fished Pelican for the first time in many years Sat. nite, we didn't find much for fish, caught 4 walleyes, all very small. Not worth the trip for me, and the boat is going bye bye for the year. Its more hunting time

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
