Am I out of touch with modern fishing, or am I right that.....

the legal speed limit is "responsible and prudent" unless marked with buoys or at the landing. which i believe means, no racing, no excessive speeds, and basically....just be respectful and responsible.

I beleive the state wide speed limit on all lakes is 50 MPH

Are you thinking of snowmobiles, not boats?

I believe most tournaments have a speed restriction of 50 mph.

Just read up on boat reg.'s on DNR website and found nothing about speed limit on boats or personal water craft.

I could of missed somthing, but I went over it twice.

I agree about the "to each his own" idea. I think it's great if somebody wants to put a hodgepodge of engines and motors on their boat. The important thing is that it pleases the owner. I never make any negative judgements about the efficacy of such a solution or the desirability of the solution. But I still reserve the right to think some things are a little weird.

Hey. It's still funnie.

Do you think he has a F-350 super Duty just to get it in and out of the water?

No, I'm all for big boat like that. You never know when you may have a camera and soundman in your boat. That would never work in a 16 footer. By the way I've been in a 16' boat many time on lake Michign. Perfect size to fit between the big rollers.

He has money and he's loose with it. If your nice to him some might come your way. So lets all stand up and give a cheer to the Kings new clothes.

And 2 years ago on Lake Michigan during the Door County tourney two sixteen foot boats were pulled swamped into the marina. I know as I saw them being towed.

I like life, its a great thing. smile.gif

Definitely "to each their own". My eyes would open a little wider seeing that kind of rig, but if that's what he needs or wants for the fishing he does, then so be it.

For me, the ideal setup is a decent sized main motor, a kicker motor in the 8 - 9.9hp range and a bow mount up front. I've got 2 of the three, just need to find a day when I have money for the kicker.

Now, there is one thing that I think appears to be overkill and that's the guys that have 3 or 4 of those 10" sonar/gps/mapping units mounted all over their boats along with a couple handhelds propped up somewheres. To me, that's overkill, but again, to each their own. Plenty of "TV" to watch in them boats. grin.gif

My question is how do these guys generate the cash to dump into their "passions"? Do they own a bunch run down apartments where the less fortunate people are living like rats? Wretched excess is not excusable because "he likes it" when there is endless suffering going on in the world. You see an article about Lebron James's new bedroom having more square footage than any HOUSE in town and you think if the draft is ever reinstated then he should be first in line. If everyone's passion was doing something decent for others we all might get to enjoy a little fishing. There is probably nothing more harmful than greed and it affects each of us.

Wow. I'm definitly one of those guys who gets a chuckle out of these "overkill" boats catching the same fish next to me in my 14 footer. However, to spout off that having an expensive boat means that you're automatically some kind of daddy warbucks slumlord, twisting your mustache and laughing evily at the poor and unfortunate seems a bit over the top.

Maybe we'd all be better off and "more equal" if Big Brother issued all good comrades a Russian standard 16' Lundingrad boat with matching 25hp Marxury motor.

That didn't take long. I should know better than to make such sweeping statements. I just think it is a joke what some people feel they deserve when so many have nothing. I guess it is a good thing that the richest 1% enjoy 90% of the wealth.

I'll bet the guy had an anchor too.

I've run the gambit with my boats starting with a 19(something) 12 footer with a 5 hp Green Johnson Sea Horse. I now have a very nice rig to fish out of with all the attachments, including three motors. I know one thing for sure; when I'm at the hospice high on pain meds and waiting to meet the big guy, I'm not going the be laying there wishing I had fished less and worked more.

I think its funny how guys with small boats whine about guys with bigger boats. If you could afford a nicer boat, my bet is that you would have one. I would rather be caught in wind in a 621 Ranger over a 14' dingy. But then again, anyone who has a more expensive boat than you can't catch fish either. Some of you guys are just wish you could have a nicer boat, but since you can't, no one else can either. smirk.gif

Political statement? grin.gif

Political statements... jealousy... comments about those of us who have smaller boats... blah, blah, blah.

I see it this way. I've got a 16' boat that I am almost done remodeling. New floor, carpet, etc. Why? Because I wanted to, and I like the boat I have. It fits my needs, both for fishing & pleasure rides with my family.

Do I wish I could afford something newer, bigger, faster, maybe a little fancier? Sure. Why not? Isn't that part of being alive? Always striving for "more"?

If your "more" is giving your money to those less fortunate, so be it. If yours is a new boat with everything that you could possibly want and/or need, and maybe a little extra, cool with me. Just don't mind me if I stare a little and have a look on my face like I'd love to take a boat like that for a ride some day.

I do need to vent a little here, though... I've been on FM for a few years now, and posts like this are really taking a lot of the fun away from this website lately. There's way too much rush to judgment in situations that the "judge" doesn't even know. This used to be an extremely friendly, open-minded group of people who were more interested in what's working to catch fish, where they're biting, and sometimes getting together than it has become. It's disappointing, and to be honest, I'm finding myself not checking things out as often as I used to. We need to lighten it back up a bit and remember the old motto... "WE HAVE MORE FUN"... not "Get hacked for whatever you say"

In the end, I say if you can afford to get the best, do so. If not, get the best that you can afford and work your butt off to be able to afford better if you so choose.

Just my $.02

I wonder how many of you that think this guy had to much into his goat own more than one rifle and one shotgun? Different toys for different situations.

Like Limitout said, if you can do it, do it. I'll throw in just because a guy can spends more than you it dosen't mean you have to hate him. He more than likely has a fair amount of higher education and has probably worked very had and made sacrifices in his life to get where he is.

Some people choose to make $30,000 a year and live in the outstate area and some choose to make $300,000 a year and live in the city. Neither one is any better than the other, only one more than likely has more toys and the other more than likely has more acres.

Here is my situation... (and a way of not letting myself get jelous of those beautiful boats!)

I would rather make less money yet have 3 full summer months off to fish every weekday in a 14' boat then work my butt off all year and have a Triton sitting in the garage.

But.. I would like both! smile.gif

I personaly do not care what someone spends or has. Maybe he inherited it. But looking at the amount of debt the American public acumulates it makes me cringe just a little to see $30,000 boats and wonder if he/she is in hock beyond belief to afford it. Affording is not the same as buying.

As far as making $30,000 and living up north. Why do you assume everyone working up here makes less than those in the Metro area. We have just as many toys, acres, and debt as anyone else. Of course the cost of those acres are rising thanks to their popularity.

Papabear ~

As a courtesy, you may want to re-read MnFish's entry again. Doesn't appear he was casting any judgements upon anyone.

" Some people choose choose to make $30,000 a year and live in the live in the outstate area and some choose to make $300,000 a year and live in the city in the city. neither one is any better than the other only one more than likely has more toys and the other more than likely has more acres. "

I'm all for the exchange of money. It is what makes the country tick.

I keep trying to think of what the perfect fishing boat for what I do would be. A dream boat, so to speak. The boat that will get the lure to the fish the most efficint and effective ways posable. It is always the 16' tiller boat sitting on my drive way. I can work a sharp drop off in a way that the bigger boats couldn't possibly work. But that is fishing.

The other day I saw a 20' bass boat with a 200hp motor. Nothing funnie about that. I looked into the boat as I walked by, There I saw two rods. both had Zebco 404's on them. I'll leave it up to you if that is funnie or not.

I usually have Batman and Princess fishing poles somewhere in my boat. I caught a dandy pike on the Princess pole earlier this year --- my kids were going nuts cheering me on, so were the people in 3 nearby boats grin.gif I guess it was pretty funny grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I say if you want it, get it. Do what you have to do to afford it. I love fishing out of my friends pro-v, and another friends alaskan, but in my mind COMFORT and the BEST times, to ME, comes from MY OWN boat even if it only has 30 horses and 3 bench seats. Its kind of a spin off those people who will only poop on their own toilet, if thats what your comfortable with, thats just fine. grin.gif

Why did you assume I meant up north? I didn't specify any area of the state. I did say what I did because I grew up "outstate", and am very familiar with the pro/cons of living there along with the payscale.

I never could see why someone needed a large, fully rigged boat until I fished out of one. All I can say is it is incredible. I could never fault anyone for having a rig like that. I would if I could.

Let me guess: single, works in the construction biz, & drives a decked-out F350. Envey smirk.gif

For some, having a boat like that was mentioned and all the bells and whistles attached are tools of the trade, sort of speak...

Depending on certain situations, certain bodies of waters, etc, etc. Each one of those tools might need to be incorporated to stay in touch with the fish. Be it on a calm day or a day with 3 to 6 footers. Your boat and each tool on your boat used seperately or combined can make a day or break a day.

I know of one guy that runs the exact set-up as described, and know others who have similar brand boats as big with the same tools. These people guide, tourney fish, etc etc. And if it werent for that boat and their tools, on marginal weather days with anything less, they would not be able to work.

But even so, when even a hardcore angler or the weekend warrior has that type of boat, I bet they rig that boat for the same ideas I listed as people who make a living on the water.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
