It's a Blade Party!

Team Otter

I made a "day run" to the big pond today with a good friend of mine. Like many of you know, the bite has slowed from the torrid pace it was on but the quality we experienced today more than made up for the lesser numbers. With the exception of 2 fish, they all exceeded the 22" mark. Riggin' was just not in the cards today as was the suspended crank bite, at least for us. Today, blades and crawlers ruled the roost. And, even with that bite, it required some adjustment. We ended up connecting with shorter snells and larger blades. This combination, coupled with speed control, made for the best vibration and flash at 0.7 - 1.1 mph. Gold blades and pink hooks with charteuse beads was the dominate presentation but we went through the tackle box before settling on that. Definitely a day full of challenges but in the end, we brought quite a few beautiful fish to the boat. The lake is just chalked full of bait right now, so "force feeding" is a must. Those 'eyes are fat and sassy. Get after 'em! They need their ego's brought down a bit. grin.gif

Pictures forthcoming of some of our better fish from the day.

Gotta love Mille Lacs!

Old Chinaman (or was it Fellagy) once told me....

Judge a fisherman's SKILL not by the size of his fish. Judge a fisherman's SKILL by the size of his boat and the quantity of his electronics. grin.gif

Thanks.

It was really nice but we didn't put it on the tape. We were sure it wasn't 30" so getting it back in the water ASAP was the priority.

I actually was "the passenger" for once. grin.gif The boat was my buddies; 690 Ranger Tiller. He's got it set-up about as nice as you'd want it.

I hope more people pay attention to what you just mentioned. Get them back in the water as quickly as possible. It you don't consider it a trophy , get it back in the water ASAP

Need a new pair of splash guards for my boat. The old ones (an off brand) finally broke. Any recommendations???

Any chance on hooking up for a Fall trolling outing??

TO, great fish and great report. I like the way you keep throwing stuff at them til you find what works. A lot of guys would have pulled cranks all day and said the bite is dead. It's been pretty slow for me on blades this year, but I keep trying them and maybe this weekend will be my time for them. Again great fish and pics.

Wave Wackers are tough to beat but Walleye Masters also could be considered. And I'm sure there are others.

As far as a fall outing, absolutely! When you have a chance, fire me an e-mail at [email protected] and let me know what you are thinking.

Any recommondations as to where I can get them. I didn't see them on Cabela's web site.

I'll give you a holler next week, and talk about this Fall.

you can google wavewackers or walleye master and the threads will get you to where you can call somebody.

ive always liked wavewackers. the boat i have came with walleye master guards on it though. they do the job as good as can be expected of any wave guard. so, it might be a cost issue for you? i have had waves come over the guards and wash down the back of the boat...mostly feet and legs get wet, no big deal. nothing would of stopped them. if the fish are biting, a lot of things you normally wouldnt put up with become trivial annoiances, nothing major.

regards,

For Wave Wackers, I'm guessing you can go right to the manufacturer. They have a website and/or a "612" telephone number.

Sounds good. I'll wait to hear from you.

Could not find anything on Walleye Masters. On the internet. Any suggestions. Maybe I'll call some dealers.

Looking forward to an outing with you this Fall. I'll be in touch next week.

Herrick Enterprises manufacturers Wave Wackers.

Looking forward to it as well!

Try Whitecap splash guards. Not sure if I can say that on this site. But installed on my boat was cheaper than the cost of the Wave Wackers without being installed.

They are a nice brand too. I forgot about that one. grin.gif

I have Whitecaps and am pleased with them (easy to install, nicely supported and reasonably priced).

The guy sells them out of his house by Mystic Lake. I think I paid about $215 with them installed on a Alumacraft Navigator 175. Just search Whitecap Splash Guards and the site should come up.

I was out by my self on Saturday for about 4 hours. Caught 4, 1-17" 3-25" and lost 4 on the way to the boat. I was out in no mans land 34 feet. Used leadcore with #8 shad rap.

Thanks Jim.

Went out Monday....It was HOT!!! Lite breeze occasionally.

Overcast on and off. Little success. A few perch and a couple smallies. Did not get into them in the deep enough water. Left before dark because of the heat. Did not see anyone catching anything. frown.gif

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
