Picked up two small lakers tonight about a block off 40th Ave. East, both came on a #4 pink Kroc, 100' back, no weight.

When I got home and unloaded the boat I noticed one of my boxes with mostly Bombers was missing, and also my GPS. Must have set down somewhere and took off without it. Bummer!

Hi all,

Just wanted to kind of introduce myself. Moved to Duluth last winter from central Wisconsin. I was poised to hammer the muskies this year, then started trolling on the big pond and now I'm hooked! I have enjoyed your posts and thought I'd better finally jump on here and contribute. I have a small boat (16-foot Lund) and can't always get out, but I still manage 2 or 3 trips a week. I just can't get enough of being out there and listening to the hum of the downriggers. Anyway, keep the posts coming. You all sound like some good folks.

Got out this morning for a couple hours. Did OK on Friday and Monday and hoped for some success this morning (plus I had a first-timer with me and wanted to show him a good time.) Fished the same couple spots and marked fish but just couldn't get them to hit. Didn't really do anything different, although we tried higher and lower after not getting any bites. I guess that's why they call it fishing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fishing has been really good on the cheesey side. Some guys are even finding kings and coho. Not many of course but a few. A couple guys I know have even ran into a few elusive walleye out in deeper water on the line. Leadcore seems to be taking a mixed bag. Anywhere from 2-5 colors with sticks.

Hot flat days are tough fishing but if your lucky enough to get a South or SouthWest wind and a bit of wave action you can get some on top with board lines. The Glow Perch Renosky sticks have been HOT and the cheap sunglasses bomber and pink bomber with white dots is taken a few as well.

As far as downriggers the hottest spoon lately have been green n orange combos. Pink Lemonade a far second.

Have fun and good luck.

Instigator it changes almost daily this time of year. Especially when we cant keep the wind out of the same direction for more than a day or 2.

It was a cloudy overcast day and the fish were "On" that day. 95' was where some were doin good and others were doing well up tight to the South Shore.

Seems like the pods and at times clouds of smelt are moving around with the wind and if you can find them you can usually pull a few fish from these areas. I have seen more clouds of smelt in the past month than I remember seeing in years. That can only be a good thing.

Its funny board lines are still working, even with surface temps in the 70's at times. Just goes to show ya that food is the #1 key for these fish. If the smelt are there they will venture into some pretty warm water temps to chow.

Maybe instead of GPS taging some walleyes and cohos I need to tag some smelt? crazy.gifwink.gif

I think I am going to go fishing with my brother on Sunday. We are going to go out from Duluth. Does anyone have a reports to share? Just hoping to get pointed in the right direction. What depth would you suggest with the current water temperature?

I'm looking for help in resolving a friendly debate. I'm pretty new to Lake Superior trolling. Saturday I caught a fish on bottom in 95 fow on a squid/smelt. The fish fought like crazy and even leaped out of the water at the surface. I eventually landed the 26-inch fish. I deemed it to be a steelhead, and since I was in MN, threw it back. I should add it floundered a bit on the surface, but eluded my net and dove before I could whip the boat around to revive it more. I judged it to be a steelhead based on a distinct pinkish-purple cheek mark and a white mouth. I did not note whether the tail was forked or whether it was pointed or rounded, but it was completely spotted. In talking with some folks, there is talk it may have been a coho. I will add that in measuring it against my taped-on ruler on the gunwhale, it left a bunch of scales, which has been my experience with cohos. Any opinions? Sorry, didn't get a photo.

It is always hard to plan a trip on the big lake in advance.

You never reaaly know the weather till you look out in the morning, and check the sky and some of the local flags. Fishing in 3 footers or more, is no fun, and not very enjoyable. Give it a shot again, once you get out there and try it, You will be looking for your own rig... grin.gif

Anybody planning on fishing the southside this weekend. I am heading up tonight and would like to get out a couple of times, weather permitting.

Got out this morning for about 2 hours. We were out in 105-110 fow. 61 degrees. We were a bit unorganized this morning. Everything that could go wrong did. We ended up catching one stick and one lake trout! The lake trout was a "hanger." No idea how long it was on there or at what depth it hit, but it was a nice surprise!

A guy here at work was out all day yesterday trolling in 50 to 30 fow ( on the South Shore)and never had a single release. He said that the grass hoppers were thick on the water out there.I asked if any thing was working the surface and he said he saw nothing rolling all day.

Sounds like a plan Steve. Give me a shout. I am planning on going out in the morning, it looks like it might be ok.

I am using grasshoppers for bait....I have heard people cleaning fish full of them. I have enough of the things on my boat to harness a few. I am not sure where to fish though, not much reporting going on.

Ran, I hear you about the needing to fish. If you want to join us Saturday morning your welcome. The dragon boaters have invaded the island for the weekend already.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
    • smurfy
got mine done........for the cabin.....ready for summer festivities!!!!!!   there was still frost in the ground...........but good gawd are the lakes low!!!!!
    • CigarGuy
