Simple rules. Catch it on Tonka and post your fish here with a photo if you got one. Maybe I can get the honchos here to cough up some kind of prize. How about an autographed photo of Jonny P?

46" (Although I forgot to pinch the tail. Not sure what that would have added)

Johnny P autographed photo is a great idea!

They were on fire today. We hooked up with 2 and had 4 more follow right to the boat to no avail. The big one in the boat was 46" today, but there were two that followed that looked significantly bigger. The action was between 7:30am and 9:30am. Not bad for a couple hours of casting. I will see if we can get the picture up.

We had an amazing day on Tonka the other day with many opportunities and a few in the boat. The highlight of the day was this massive beast of nature that i caught. It was a boatside attack also, it followed from way out there and grabbed it finally about 3 feet from the boat just as i was about to start the figure 8. It was absolutely amazing!!

Excellent fish. I still get freaked by those boat side attacks. Number one reason to fish muskies.

Beautiful fish, I have had an unusual number of those boatside attacks this year, a definate rush. Congrats on a true trophy. Looks like you were in good company.

Here is my entry - a 48 incher that looked like it had scoliosis. I wish it's body was proportionate to it's head

I know it's small, but it's my first muskie... 32". Caught on Minnetonka with my new muskie spinning rod/reel setup (7' St Croix Ex-Hvy action/Shimano Symetre 4000) with a custom muskie in-line spinner (similar to a DC-10). I took a couple quick pictures with my cell-phone and released her quickly. Sorry about the rather poor and unorthodox shots, but I was fishing alone and it was the only way I could take pictures.

Steffanf. Man that's a hog to me. I will try to post my first musky, also from Minnetonka. I think if I would have pinched the tail he would have gone 17". Oh ya and it was a successful release despite the vertical hold. (just joking on the vertical hold, obviously wouldn't have done that with a big one.)

... pertaining to JiggingSpoon's 53" class fish. Look at the camo on the release arm compared to the earlier pic. Why the change of wardrobe? hmm... confused.gif Upon further retrospect, I cry foul. Can I do that? Trying to be friendly and all...

I don't really care one way or the other....but good observation. I never noticed the change of coat for the release on that. Different fish? Kept the big one? Let one of the small ones go? Either way, the fish was definitely legal to keep and I don't knock him if he did. wink.gif

Could have been the camera man putting the fish back. Nothing wrong that I can see. Very impressive fish.

... and is the cameraman 5'1" like the other two guys? Just kidding. Incredible looking fish. I'm sorry... I'll log off.

Hey Now!! Just can't get any respect around here. Actually Beer batter is correct, it is the camera man that is putting the fish back in the water, we measured the fish in the water and he had the tail and i had the head, after the measuring stick was removed he just kept the tail and released the fish. I have the catch on video and would share it if i knew how to make it smaller in size and post it. Then you would see that the camera man is the one netting the fish, in his CAMO JACKET!! I would never kill a muskie in my life and didn't even think twice about whether to keep or release this fish. I don't have $800 to get a mount anyways!! But all in all nice job noticing it, and you can believe me or not, but I know for sure that the fish is still swimming somewhere, and if it is in a freezer, it is not mine!! Now where is my Johnny P. autographed pic!!!

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
