Joe's Sporting Goods. They have it this year. They run about $1.50 each. An alternative is what I've been using before - any other bulk weights (exemple: snap-on) flatened with hammer. Works just as good smile.gif

you got these that night i was there?

Yep. We caught nothing on the spot where we met. Then my friend left and I moved over to the other place down the stream, which I showed you. I ran outh of suckers, so I tried to catch some shads with my cast net. All I caught were the gar and 5 lb carp. But I knew how important was to get a shad, so I desperately tried for at least half an hour. Finally I pulled out two ooo.gif I had the bite within one (!) minute. I could not stay any longer, my hands were pretty sore from casting that net, so I went home. Maybe this was not out of ordinary large flathead, but I was one very satisfied man, I re-confirmed the superiority of shad (in this particular area) and broke in my new rod. Not to mention I caught the fish right after my friend left home smirk.gif. He never learnes...

Hmmm... 2 things.

1- Shad are going to be very, very difficult to catch right now. The guys I get my shad from are having a tough go at finding them right now. That will be changing soon but there aren't many around right now.

2- You should really pick your weights up (No-Rolls) at Moore's Bait & Tackle in Minneapolis. Gonna be a lot better price than what Joe's is selling them at.

I wont steal any light away from "Moore's", but the place I get my no roll's has them for $0.68 for two. I bought about 10 packs this spring.

Ouchless,

Nice fish!!!!

Way to adapted to you cond...

I know a place where you can catch hundreds of them almost every day within half an hour right from the bank. The problem is they show up there for as little as two hours in the morning and again before sunset. The only way I coud get 'em is with my cast net. They wa-a-ay too fast for any minnow scoops when get large. Every year I see a chineese fellow down there, about 60 year old. I asked his grand child what are they doing with 6 gal. buckets packed with shad (no water, just shad packed like sardines confused.gif). It turns out they pickle it. Well, after all, shad is from herring family.

I also buy mine at another place and pay approx what Shackbash does. if you look around, you can find them pretty reasonable.

I just checked an online place recommended 2 & 1/2 cents each for the 1 1/2 oz. guess thats better than 2 for .68 checkin my math 25 for $6.20.

Sparce,

The ones I get are 4 onces and two to bag for $0.68. That is still cheap though.

No luck for three times last week. Time to change strategy according to spawn. How far away from ther "home" are flatheads goes to spawn?

Tiny, smaller than 2 in. shad began to show up. I think while flatheads seem to avoid me I'll target channels with a bunch of small shad on the hook. They will grow fast - I read that shad grows fast in order to avoid bass eating them all...

Yep, it worked. Not even 15 minutes wait. Two little shads on the hook. There was another, smaller (2 pound?) channel later.

hey Ouchless, i too often fish by the dam at black dog, how big is the diameter of your cast net? i have one as well but its about a 3/4inch mesh and it has a big rip in it, do you cast it near the dam as well? or do you go somewhere else?

Link to comment

It is 6 ft in diameter. I had to repair holes in it couple times, changed the lead lines also. Throwing it right by the dam in the swirling water sure gonna get it snaged. Instead, try to cast it right where the water joines the river main. After dark it is different, go downstream to that iron ledge and cast there - you will catch fewer, but larger shad there. But this info is about a week old, I have not gone there recently and shad may be plantiful by now.

Just letting you guys know... the cast nets are illegal. We had a big debate over it bcause its not clearly specified anywhere. We got one of the local game wardens involved and he at 1st thought they were legal, and corrected himself a few days later after digging further and they are in fact illegal.

land of 10,000 fishing laws(and that only seems to cover a couple counties!)

Last night, 4 am. Just one small channel in 3 hours before this one. It was 28 lb and I caugt it on the dead shad about 4 in long. Hook - 7/0 octopus circle.

Thanks. Not having a boat, I worked on the casting technique and tuning my lure to extend my distance. Either it is pure "being there at the right time in the right place" or maybe casting far at this particular location has something to do with it. One thing I know - I sure can send my 4 oz. weight in the barge window if they blind me again on purpouse grin.gif

Slightly funny... wink.gif Takes some brass to talk smack when your biggest is hmmmmmm..... How big? LOL... wink.gif

Nice fish Ouchless. There are some good ones in that area. We've pulled a couple over 40 out of there as well as 20s and 30. Keep doing what makes you feel confident. If its launching it a country Mile to get out past the regulars. Your probably on to something.

thanks

LOL, you got me there. I only wear this sweater because it's dark and fish don't talk laugh.gif Also, knowing the history of the area, I don't really want to look too dressed up wink.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
