Name Suggestions

This has probably been discussed before, but I would like some suggestions for puppy names...

My wife and I picked up our 7 week old GSP last Thursday and have been struggling to come up with a name. I don't want to choose a name just for a name's sake, but nothing seems to stick. We're concerned that we need to come up with a name within the next week or so, just to get the pup off on the right foot.

Some of the names we have already discussed are: Lightning, Blizzard (the pup's dad's name), Darby, Kodiak (shortened possibly to Cody or Kody), Leopold (shortened to Leo) and Leif.

Our last dog's name was perfect the very first time we said it...we havent been as lucky this time.

I had a Shorthair once... named him 'Baron'. Thought it fit well with his German heritage.

How about 'Rudy' short for rooster, or 'Ruff' as in grouse. 'Sage' or 'Tag' as in the cover the birds live in...

Names I like for male dogs are standard male names from a couple generations ago...My male is named Hank.

I have a buddy who let his little boy name his Golden...He ended up as "Batman"... lol

Picking out a name can be difficult. You are right, the minute you say it, you'll know that is fits. I had to go through that since summer. I came up with Gus the Dog based on a character from the book "The River Why". I have always thought Earl was a classic name for a dog. 10-15 years ago I swore that's what I'd name my next dog. Unfortunately, since then I have become good friends with 2 Earl's and it just doesn't seem right, I wouldn't want the pup to feel offended .

NO matter what name you choose, don't select one that ryhmes with a command. I knew a dog that was named "Kit" and that was a very confused dog (because of "sit"). My current dog's name is "Buzz." The kids named him.

My GSP Male's name is Blaze. We were also thinking Ace or Gynx

My last dog's name was Remington. He was one of the first dogs I knew with that name. We got him in the spring of 1994, and the first time we said the name "Remington", it was perfect. It has become a very popular name these days, though.

I do like the last suggestion of Blaze...I'll have to see what the boss lady thinks! Keep the suggestions coming....sooner or later one will jump out that seems just right!

I like names that are somewhat different so if you're hunting with someone else and you're both yelling at your dog (that NEVER happens, right?), your dog won't get confused. My old GSP was Sadie and my good friend has a GSP named Sunday. We'd call one and they both came...and they looked like twins too!

I also like 2 syllable names for some reason.

I like to follow my grandpa's style, when it comes to giving dogs their names. He had one named Rain, because it was raining when he got her. One named Yeller because he was yellow. And my favorite, Last because it was going to be his last dog. When my wife brought home our current dog, I named her Sunday. It was that or Wal-Mart, since she got her in their parking lot.

Picked up a six month old chocolate lab and my wife did not like the name it was given. "Ringer". So we had to come up with something close. We were working with ringer one day on heal and sit. My wife said, he always sticks his STINGER out when he sits . Well there you go dear, you just named our dog "STINGER"

After 12 1/2 years she still tries to call him stinker .

We got a new puppy (GWP) a month ago and we must have had 30 names picked out. Everyone in the family had a reason not to name her every name we came up with. Finally, my son said "How about Piper?" No one had a reason not to name her that, so we went with it. I think of the Piper Cub when I hear it.

My rules were: It can't sound like NO, It needs to be short and sharp sounding, and I don't want to be embarrassed yelling it in the field.

My dog is named aspen. wanted something original. That and it is sort of a family tradition to name dogs after funny movies. My parents dog is named Cooper after the movie Baseketball, i figured i would pick a name out of my favorite movie "Dumb and Dumber"

Had a hard hunting shorthair named Herschel for 12 years he always did that name proud. Another name I've hunted behind for a shorthair was Skeeter,kind of fitting for Minnesota. Have a wirehair named Gunner now along with my GSP Bailey........Tracey

I currently have 2 black labs. The oldest is Boo, (long story) and his younger brother is Buzzie.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all of the really great suggestions!

There were a lot of names in the previous posts that caught the attention of my wife and I, but we still had a tough time agreeing on names. We were able to agree on Leopold...it's a bit long, but it works, and plan to mostly call him Leo.

I had a Lab once that was named Mess! Shortened for Mark Messier!!! One of the greater names ever bellered in the field. MESS!... HERE!

We decided on Leopold...but will more than likely end up calling him Leo most of the time.

While hunting pheasant in No Dak many years ago we had a guy working the ridge right by our camp site, he spent 1/2 hour calling his dog as it ran in front of him flushing everything,the guy was very frustrated as his dog came running in to our camp.Beautiful GSP, his name, as he was called over and over, DAMIT, COME DAMIT, COME DAMIT....

we teased the guy as how he came up with such a uniqe name as DAMIT. The dogs name was actually Gunner, but we will always call him DAMIT:):) LOL
