  2. The sweltering heat, high humidity values, and intermittent thunderstorms have certainly provided some challenges for anglers but even as we enter the dogdays of summer the fish are still on the chow! As we all know there is never any shortage of action when one sets out to target Bass. Smallmouth Bass can be found along the deep weed lines, rocks, and sunken humps. Try using a Drop-Shot Rig tipped with a Leech. Largemouth on the other hand can be found working the weeds inside and outside the lines using Tubes, Spinner Baits, and Carolina Rigs. In the early morning, try working docks, shoreline structure and swimming platforms next to sharp drop-offs. Of course, usually by this time of year we have shifted our focus to chasing Large Slab Crappies. The weed beds are holding large numbers of both Crappies and Sunfish. Pay especially close attention to the cabbage along deeper drop-offs. Slip-Bobbers using live bait or plastics, Small Swim Baits, Spinners, Beetle Spins are all working well, these buggers have been hungry!! The Walleye bite is also one that has yet to relinquish to the torrid, humid conditions. A lot of techniques have still been producing good numbers of fish. Anything from pulling Spinners in the weeds, Lindy Rigs, Slip-Bobbers, jigs tipped with Leeches, Crawlers or Chubs… Cranks, Shiver Minnows and the list goes on!! It really is Dealer’s Choice it seems, trolling Cranks on the mid-lake flats has been best toward the evening hours until after dark, Spinners have been enticing them during the mid-day, as well as jigging raps for the walleye found out over the deep structure. -Cheers! 3. Well the winds blew and blew and blew some more on Leech Lake this past week and with that came some serious changes for the walleye bite. The LLWT was another huge success, as a whole the numbers of fish caught were down do to the changing conditions on the lake, but as they say someone is always catching them somewhere and that statement held true. Great job to everyone involved with planning and making it one of the best walleye tournaments in the Midwest. The walleye bite has been very sporadic with some days a shallow bite in 4-7ft of water producing and others being deeper in 10-17ft of water. A jig with a shiner is still producing at times, but as a whole leeches and crawlers seemed to produce more fish on lindy rigs, jigs, or even spinners. Speed seems to be the name of the game. Some days when rigging they want it .4-.6mph and other days you needed to move and move quickly to provoke a reaction bite whether you were rigging or jigging. With the strong NW winds, the south end of the Main Lake has set up as well as did the Eastern Points and shorelines. Walker Bay has a spotty bite on shoreline breaks, but anglers found good success at times catching some keeper fish in 12-20ft of water. Best advice to give you right now is seek out areas that have not been pressured and try different baits and presentations. Until next week! Jason Freed Leisure Outdoor Adventures
  4. Anyone ever do it? It looks like there is some large areas of flats with 20-30 ft depths that would be good areas to try. Have never fished the lake so not sure if it would be worth the effort?
  5. Headed up to Leech Thursday morning and was able to get on the water for a bit that night, we had 2 boats in our party 1 boat did ok finding the eyes on Thursday night but the other boat (mine) only caught a few small ones. All were caught on jig and minnow this night in around 12 to 16 fow. On Friday afternoon stopped in for some gas and bait at Grand Vu and got some pointers for some new areas to try, and thanks to those tips Friday evening was a different story. Both boats were able to get on some great fish. Many 21 to 25 inch fish caught and almost limits for everyone in all boats just a few short but with all the big fish it was a great time. This night all fish came on a snell with leeches in 9-13 fow. Saturday we did not fish much because of the weather, and Sunday had to get on the road pretty early so fished just a litter and only caught a few small fish. Had a blast and cannot wait to get back Will work on making a video from the gopro but for now here are a few pictures of some of our fish
  6. Ok so we're finishing up our week of fishing here on Leech and will head back to Iowa tomorrow. It was a great time, the lake sure didn't disappoint. Pannies are in the shallows (we found 64 degree water in some bays) and the walleye's were a bit of a struggle UNTIL we got in contact with a guide (Tom Wilson). I was in a follow boat one day and that was the highlight of the trip. If you can swing it a guide like Tom is sure worth the coin. I really like how Tom not only showed us the current techniques / lures / presentations but more importantly spots to hit in the following days of our vacation. Anyway we ended up with a 28.5 walleye being the largest of the week and Two members of our family got their personal bests for eyes on this trip as well. The personal bests are still swimming in Leech as we speak. Slow death rigged Berkeley Gulp crawlers worked well for us; especially towards the end of our stay. But Leechs and slip bobbers were our go too each evening. We were unable to get on a good crankbait bite though and while trolling cranks noticed a real lack of pike hookups. While I am hoping to make it back to Leech next year a return in 2017 is probably a more realistic bet. Until then, good luck to you all, Kevin.
  7. Leech Lake Fishing Report Well the Leech Lake Walleye Tournament is a wrap and another huge success it was. Almost 1300 fish were brought to the scales with almost 80 limits of 6 fish brought to the scale each day. The best part there was a 98% live release rate which says a lot about the success of this tournament and its incredible workers. A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved who helped make once again the Leech Lake Walleye Tournament one of the best in the Midwest. Last but not least a big congratulations goes to one of the LOA team members Aaron Murphy and his partner Pete Miskovich on their 5th place finish and the largest bag for Day 1 of the tourney. The lake is changing by the days and week. Fish can be caught so many different ways and in so many different types of locations. During the tournament anglers had success lindy rigging, with a jig and minnow, and pulling spinners. The fish are definitely transitioning into their summer patterns and haunts and as June moves along it should really get good. For the LOA team, a jig and a minnow was by far our best producer when it came to putting fish in the boat. Depending on the conditions aggressive snap jigging along sand flats, breaklines in 8-12ft of water, or pitching jigs into cabbage was the best producer. 1/8th KenKatch Long Shank Jigs were the ticket and color was key. Changing up the color during bright conditions vs. cloudy or overcast was the key to putting more fish in the boat. Many anglers had a lot of success rigging leeches and crawlers along shoreline breaks and along transition lines of rock/gravel or sand and gravel. Having a longer snell with a smaller hook and glow bead, such as 6+ feet was definitely a key to success. Spinner fishing is starting to also pick up and one of our favorite times of the year..look for rock edges on the main lake reefs or shoreline breaks around Sand Beach and Two Points to produce fish in 12-16ft of water. Speed was the key, going anywhere from 1-1.5MPH depending on the weather conditions. June is one of our favorite times to be on the lake because there are so many locations and ways to catch Mr. Walleye. The Cabelas NWT tourney is the next big event on the lake in just a little over a week. It should be fun to see many of the well known pros in action. Get out and Set the Hook! 8. Pounded these bays and Pumphouse too for Largemouth over two days and came up empty...How can such good looking areas not produce bass? Maybe I fished it wrong but used plastics and spinner baits to no avail. Shaking my confidence.
  9. Friday and Sunday’s walleye fishing was pretty decent. Friday we had strong north winds and rain most morning. It was not pleasant but the fish didn’t care and bit well. My quests were not keeping fish so we just had fun releasing walleyes all morning. We figured we boat close to 20 walleyes with the largest being just over 25”in the 3 hours we lasted. I didn’t fish Saturday. Sunday was a cold morning and a chilly boat ride. The numbers were about the same but it took twice the time. We had a decent wind and found the fish to be a little lazy in the beginning but as the day warmed the fish got active. Catching more slot then keepers, it took most the trip to get our limit but action was steady all day. Sunday’s high light was the first fish I’ve seen over the slot this season, a fat 27”. Both days saw the larger fish being a little shallower then the rest of the catch. Whereas the majority of fish were caught in 10ft the larger fish were plucked out of 8ft. Jigs are still producing for me and I have been spending most my time on large flats. Fish have seemed to be holding on the subtle depth changes, often whit only a depth change of a foot. Today (6/1) was better then decent, we fished weeds and found great numbers of keeper size fish with just a couple slots and one over. We had a perfect wind and the fish cooperated very well. This is just my theory but 10 days ago the shiners were rumored to be done and not available much longer. Well that changed with a second shiner run and the bait shops have plenty. This could explain why I am getting walleyes in the same areas as I did 2 weeks ago. The shiners came back in and so did the walleyes,,, at least to the type areas I’m fishing. Water temps have been moving around all season. I had 65 on Friday on the big lake and 59 this morning warming to 61 by mid-day. I see the jig bite lasting a bit longer then I had thought earlier. Many years I have jigged walleyes up to Fourth of July, but its not always the case. Tom Wilson
