    Excellent Ice Fishing

On the south end... Some excellent Ice fishing this week. Resorts have fish houses out and good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught. Most ice fishing taking place between 20 - 27'. Using the one-two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking with a live minnow for the second line. Jigging spoons with a minnow head or tail effective for jigging line. Colors, gold, glow, glow red, pink. Some jumbo perch, big pike and eelpout keeping things interesting. An angler caught an eelpout just over 17 lbs this week. The MN State record, also caught on LOW was 19.67 lbs. Eelpout or burb
  4. Anxious for ice fishing to start once I am done deer hunting. Couldn't find any records of when Lake Vermilion ices-over (Big Bay freezes completely). I am predicting ice-over the morning of November 14th. Any other predictions?
  5. I live near a stretch of Shingle Creek where I spot carp throughout the summer, but where I’ve never seen a single fish in winter. Until today, that is. They are stacked thick there today. Would it be crazy to try and get them to bite this time of year? Have any of you ever fished them in open water during ice season?
  6. How is the ice on lake Hubert for walking travel? Planing a trip up this weekend.
  7. Haven’t had the opportunity to get out yet but did drive around on Monday and saw a couple out on area lakes. Eden lake is still 40 % open and according to my dad who lives out there it opened more overnight on Sunday night. I remember when I was young, more years than I care to think about, a snowmobile went down in 70 feet of water . They never made it out. With all the new people going out due to the virus, just please be careful and go with a buddy or at least let others know where your going. I hope to get out this Saturday and if I do will report how it is.
  8. Anyone been out for a drive? Did about a 100 mile loop today and things are looking better few lakes that were rolling last week we’re caped this morning. Hope to find someplace to fish next weekend. Got myself in to much of a rut going to work and sitting around every weekend.
  9. On the south end... As we approach Thanksgiving, thin ice covers back bays and a portion of the big lake, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay. Roughly half of the lake is covered in ice with the rest open water. Ice anglers are hoping for cold nights combined with low wind and no snow to create a good early sheet of ice. Every year is different based on Mother Nature of course, but normally resorts will be able to get their smaller fish houses, called day houses, out around December 10th. When the ice thickens, resorts will begin marking trails where there is the best ice. Stay tuned...

    First Ice Tips

As we all start to slowly venture on the ice I thought Id start a topic on some things tips I do to make it a more successful safety free outing. Feel free to add to this with things you do. 1- Make sure gear is ready checked over no loose flaws that could ruin the day. All proper safety equipment is packed , safety picks, chisel, throw ropes, cushions, whistle, flotation suits etc 2- Research MN lake finder look at structure sechi disc readings, depths, surveys etc. 3- Call bait stores guides talk to friends on ice thickness in area. Obviously small shallow lakes will have better ice first
  11. Found this and would like to see your opinions.... The DNR is in the process of finalizing plans for the Quality Bluegill Initiative, revealed last summer in the hope of going public early this spring. Implementation would happen in 2021. The goal was to greatly increase the number of lakes in the state with reduced limits for bluegills in hopes of growing bigger sunfish. Big sunfish, as anybody who's dunked a worm knows, is among the rarest of fish in Minnesota. A true trophy, 10 inches or longer, might be tougher to catch than an eight-pound walleye. Decad
  12. Found 5-7" on a local lake. No crappies yet but gills have been active and pike lurking. Had fun in the morning with the underwater camera. Now can we please have cold temps so all lakes can freeze.
  13. If anyone finds a silver rod case on the ice out of JRs on Red please let me know. It fell out of the sled when we were coming in last night. I was fishing out of JRs. We used the west atv parking lot, then walked out to 15’ (about a mile? maybe). The case is from Mills, I believe it is a “Lakes and Rivers”. It has a number of rods that are meaningful to me as they were built by a buddy. Reward will be given for its return. Thanks! Chris
  14. 12.8.20 Sunset Lodge Fishing & Ice Update - Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods Hello from Sunset Lodge on Oak Island! We got ice! Lower than normal current levels have led to better than average, more consistent early ice conditions in the Northwest Angle. Wind and warm temps have kept the main lake south of Garden Island open until just recently. As usual, ice conditions are always changing and there remain many areas that are still unsafe for travel. With the cold weather and little snow in the forecast we are likely to see improved and more stabl

    New to Metro area

Moved to area last winter and don’t know much about any lakes in the metro. Panfish is by far the most fun for myself and would like to get into walleyes. Would really appreciate some suggestions on where to go within the metro and try out this upcoming ice fishing season.

    RIP Ron Linder

We have lost one of the good ones. Had a long conversation with him on Gull lake in a Bass tournament we both were fishing couldn't of met a better person very down to earth classy comical person . He and his brother AL have been my idols since I was a kid. Rip Ron may the fishing gods shine upon you.
  17. Went out to check some ice on one of my lakes that seems to freeze over before most. 2-3". Still early but maybe another week and ice fishing has begun for me. We'll see. Anyone else getting excited. Now only if cold weather would hurry up and come!

    NOAA's December

Looks like NOAA national weather has modified their colder than normal winter with December being quite a bit warmer. May be a struggle to get good ice by Christmas especially Southern two thirds of the state. Getting above average snow (as forecasted) will also hamper ice build. Hope they are wrong.
  19. Yup, I started it. Seeing people post about water temps in the low 40s, and knowing that there will be a lot of cold temps this week....we may see the small bays freeze. I have a vested interest as I'd like to make it up next weekend, but have strong doubts that our small bay will be ice-free. Let's hear those reports as the lake begins to change.
  20. On the south end... Unseasonably warm weather the first week of November saw a fair number of anglers on the water. Once the lake cleaned up a bit as the waters were dirtied up from a big blow, good walleye reports started coming in from various areas. Anchored up and jigging with a minnow in anywhere from 7 - 26' of water has been the goto. Walleyes are setting up in early ice locations nicely. Some big fall pike being caught by walleye anglers jigging. Jumbo perch in the mix with walleyes. On the Rainy River... Some very good reports on the river as of recent. Four Mile Bay,
  21. Had anyone tried and had luck finding worms in late fall. For some reason we have a worm shortage, not I've place in town has had then for weeks
  22. On the south end... Dress warm and catch walleyes! Some even bring their Mr. Heater in the boat. High temps this week in the low 40's. The water temps are in the 30's and the walleyes are staged in many early ice areas. Good reports on the lake with a mix of small fish, eaters and some big fish. Consider areas on the lake such as the Lighthouse Gap, Morris Point Gap, Zippel Bay and Long Point. Good reports in all of those areas. Walleyes in 7 - 26' of water. Most anglers anchored up and jigging with an emerald shiner. Pink, gold, glow and green jigs working well. Pike are active in
  23. What’s the status of small lakes in the arrowhead? I’m going to Grand Marais this weekend, and the forecast looks pretty miserable I have a feeling I’m going to be busting through ice to launch my boat. But is it at all possible that some of these little designated trout lakes could be locked up completely?
  24. Just wondering if anyone else that fishes the Root (especially below Lanesboro) has ever patterned or had any luck targeting sauger/eyes. This is my first year trying for them after hearing whispers for years and I've been surprised with my results. So far I've caught 5 sauger and 4 eyes out of the Root this year, a 17 inch Sauger and a 22 inch eye being my biggest so far. I know the river is a lot better known for trout but if anybody else has had any luck targeting other species I'd love to share reports or tactics.
  25. Hey guys, Looking for some opinions from those of you who fish the lake consistently. We take a fall trip every year and have been on the cass chain the last 5 years. Planning on heading to Vermillion this year. We have two dates in mind being either the 18-25 of Sept or the 9-16th of October. Love to be somewhere in the middle but it wont work this year. We will fish Smallies/wallys the majority of the time and planning to stay on the east side. Would any of you suggest one of those times over the other? I am seeing the current weather up that way and its making me a bit n
