  1. On the south end... A warm up triggered some nice walleyes and saugers up on Lake of the Woods this week. A mix of walleyes and saugers with some pike, perch, eelpout and tullibees being caught in 29-33 feet. Using a bait with rattles or vibration to attract fish is helpful. On the deadstick, try a glow hook with a live minnow or even a glow bead above the hook. Set bait 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. Try gold, glow colors, chartreuse and pink good color choices this week. Electronics are helpful to show suspended fish as well as how fish are reacting to your presentation.

  4. Ice is making it's way now! Thanks to last nights 9 degrees. The lake has officially froze over evenly. Will give another report Friday! Should be walking out and fishing in 10 days!
  5. On the south end... Despite te cold weather, some good fishing reports up on Lake of the Woods this week. A nice mix of walleyes and saugers being caught in 29-33 feet. The cold weather made some of the fish less active, so coaxing them was key. Using a jigging line in one hole with lures that put out vibration or noise was helpful. That combined with a deadstick in your second hole with either a glow jig or plan hook and a minnow. Keep the jigging line moving to attract fish. Try gold, glow white, glow red, wonderbread and pink. Lures that glow, have a glow stick or make noise are eff
  6. Just out of curiosity, has anyone fished in Texas before, particularly the Dallas/Ft. Worth area? I’ll be down there the week of thanksgiving, and hoping to plan a fishing day. Originally, I was thinking of going after alligator gar. But it doesn’t sound like November is the greatest month to target them. So I’m leaning towards a multi species outing, with an emphasis on striped bass. So, just wondering if anyone has been down there and has any guides or resorts to recommend.

  8. On the south end... A good week of fishing up on Lake of the Woods. Cold weather is welcomed as the fish houses are warm! Remember, ice fishing is open through March. A nice variety of walleyes and saugers being caught in 29-33 feet. Use a jigging line in one hole and a deadstick with a live minnow in the other. Keep the jigging line moving to attract fish. Try gold, glow white, glow red and pink. Lures that glow or with a glow stick effective in the stained water. Fish range in size. A typical day will usually include small fish, eaters, some slots (19.5 - 28" to be released)

    Shimano Zodias - 2020

Spinning Rods ZDS270ML I bought the 7' ML Fast action spinning rod at the same time I bought the baitcasting Zodias Rod. Originally I was leaning more towards a L power rod, of which they did not produce such. So I settled on this one as I was looking to replace a Cabela's XML 7' ML rod that fishes well but had that butt weight system that weighs it down. The rod comes with the same 8 Fuji Alconite guides plus a SiC tip like the baitcasting models. I did use the rod to toss a lot of light 1/8 oz. lures, to include in-line spinners, poppers, and Yo-zuri Pins Minnow of including th

    Shimano Zodias - 2020

Casting Rods: ZDS170MLG I was looking for a medium light casting rod and this one sort of fill the specs I was looking for. These rods retails for around $200 and getting a sale price on them makes them very attractive price point. So I took a feel to it in the store and liked it enough to purchase it. The rod has 8 Fuji Alconite guides plus a SiC tip guide. Split Grip EVA foam handles and a Ci4+ graphite reel seat with an aluminum locking nut. This particular 7' ML model is listed as a moderate action and has a G designation for some glass material in the blank. While I check

    Ottertail 2021

Annual hard water trip to Vacationland resort on Ottertail. Bite was slow probably do to very high pressure. Lots of <12” eyes able to snag half dozen keepers. Resort has 1 winter rental cabin and hard to predict the weather with reservation made in June. Plowed road 1 mile out to the structure break, 18" ice and not much snow so able to move my day wheelhouse around a bit. Trevor (the owner) has a couple rental houses on the lake and offers lake access $20 per trip, $50 weekend pass or $150 annual pass if you bring your own rig. Was a fantastic trip with family and friend. Did have one sma

  14. Wondering if there are any recent ice and travel reports for Portage Lake near Bena. My wife and I are heading up to fish Winni in about a week and a half and we usually like to hit a smaller lake or two for panfish. I will have my 1 ton with a single axel ice castle towed behind.
  15. On the south end... A nice mix of walleyes and saugers being caught in 29-33 feet. Most anglers catching various sizes of fish, sorting through a lot of small fish to get the keepers. Keeper walleyes running on average in that 14-17" range with saugers in that 12-15" range. Lots of slot fish (19.5" - 28") being caught, photographed and quickly returned to the water to reproduce and fight another day. Some big walleyes over 28" are also being caught. The limit of walleyes and saugers on LOW is a combined limit of 6 fish, with up to 4 of the 6 being walleyes. Walleyes 19.5 - 28" must be re
  16. I have been making trips for the past 16 years, but this last one was our worst ever. Friend and I were up Thursday to Saturday. We started about 6 miles out on Thursday in 30fow. graphed very few fish, and the ones we did would not bite, we did manage to get one eye 26 1/2 inches and one keeper. So Friday we moved out past 7 miles on the outskirts of most others. Luck did not change, stay pretty much the same as Thursday, did get one 20 inch eye. There were alot of houses but could not tell if anyone was catching anything. watch a couple of trucks try to cross over a pressure ridge. first o

  21. Well Today was my maiden voyage on the ice and boy was I stoked to hit the Hardwater again! Felt great to get back on the Hard pack for another season. Plus side was I even managed to put some nice fish topside. I fished the NW corner of the state and found a good 4-5 inches on the lakes and areas I fished. This wasn't the norm though most of the lakes either just capped over or were 1-3 inches. Need some serious cold stable weather to firm things up. Cant stress ice safety and common sense in these early ice periods. Ill continue to post the current ice conditions I come across in my adve

    Been a fun ride

As many of you have probably noticed some of the frequent posters FM regulars with tips reports pics etc have moved on or rarely log in post anymore. I'm still in contact with many of them and we still share the ice together so there all healthy and things are going well. And trust me there's still a pile of fish getting caught among the group! Sadly I have decided I won't be contributing as much either and will be moving on. In case anyone was wondering why I haven't been active. It's just been to hard frustrating and time consuming to try and keep things moving forward, Yes I'm still

  24. Hello, new to this forum, was hoping someone out there who has experience ice fishing the St. Croix between Bayport MN and Hudson WI would be able to provide a rough ice report in terms of ice conditions, amount of foot traffic seen, numbers of people. Just looking to get a sense of how safe the ice is out there currently with the potential snow coming up this weekend. Was thinking of making the drive (about an hour) over, but not if its already sketchy.
