  1. On the south end... Ice fishing is all finished up on the main lake. The focus is on back bays for big pike and areas of open water on the lake for walleyes. The pike season is open year round on LOW and the Rainy River. 3 fish per day, 30-40 inches must be released, one over 40" allowed. Anglers are allowed a limit of walleyes and saugers on the lake, but catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River through April 14. A limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of 6 fish with up to 4 being walleyes. Walleyes 19.5-28.0 inches must be released with one allowed
  2. New rules for purchasing a combination license in MN. DNR adjusts how married anglers and hunters buy combination licenses Both members of married couples who want to purchase a combination angling or hunting license in person will need to be present at the sales location starting Feb. 18, when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will begin requiring both spouses to provide and verify their own complete customer records on file to purchase a combination license. “These changes will bring the DNR into compliance with state and federal laws that require collecting this inform
  3. It’s coming fast! I’m guessing March 26th for birchdale
  4. We’re heading up to Lutsen area for the first week of April and I was looking for fishing ideas with kids. Options I was considering: guided ice fishing if the ice is still decent, panfish on smaller lakes or walleye on Sag or shore fishing on superior. I go up steelhead fishing every spring but that’s typically early for upper shore- maybe casting around river mouths? I also haven’t done any shore fishing off break walls so I wouldn’t know where to start- if that time of year is worth it or would hold kids attention, depths to try, etc. They do love climbing around rocks and beaches on sh
  5. On the south end... Resorts have pulled off fish houses for the season. There was some ice fishing happening this past weekend but ice conditions are deteriorating quickly. Big pike and some nice walleyes were caught. Big pike are setting up adjacent shallow water areas of bays, streams and shorelines setting up to spawn. Soon those open water areas will turn on. The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike. Pike between 30 - 40 inches must be released. One pike allowed over 40 inches. On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is open and numerous boat ramp
  6. So I am looking for advice on successful approaches on opening weekend at Osakis. I am new to fishing Osakis and I am not asking for you spots, more what you use and types of water. I have fished many times early in the year at Otter Tail. Early on it is almost exclusively a shiner bite typically on dropoffs near shallow water. Are shiner the tickets at Osakis as well? Or are there other baits that work early in the year? Also any common depths to try etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  7. Just curious how far some of you have walked across a lake to find a fishing spot? I don’t officially know myself, but assume I’ve done 3 or so miles round trip on Mille Lacs looking for tullibee. I’m probably going to try and double that (and more) in search of them again, late in the season. Has anyone traveled via bicycle across ice? I’m considering that too. Oh what we’re willing to do for a fish

    Stick A Fork In It

Just did a 6 day marathon of ice fishing in all parts of the state, and from I witnessed on a bunch of different lakes ice conditions are changing rapidly and are unsafe in the S and certain areas in the central parts of the state. Fished the Atwater area lakes couple times. ON these lakes there were areas of open water thin ice, to ice so black it could open any day. I personally advise no travel in the southern region area at all. Central MN still has walkable ice on a few lakes especially one of my favs in particular Osakis . It still held my wheeler the other day but any day could be w

  10. On the south end... Most resorts have pulled off fish houses for the season with a few resorts adjacent to better ice conditions still ice fishing. Big pike are active and staging adjacent to spawning areas. Most fish are being caught on tip ups with live sucker minnows or a dead bait like a tullibee. Most pike angling taking place in 5-15' of water. Walleye anglers finding fish 15 - 30' of water. A morning / evening bite shallower, walleyes and saugers during the day in deeper water. On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is starting to open! Some small boats pushing over s

    One last time

Eyeguy and I decided one last trip was in order to close the ice season out. We found decent ice conditions N of St Cloud within an hour- hour and half drive, though even here shorlines are really looking rough, and the snow they got definitely didn't help much. Anyway, we started drilling and catching in 13-15 ft of water, over the tops of the weeds. Problem was, the crappies were 10 inches on top end.... So we started drilling, and drilling untill we were pulling up weeds with the auger. This is where we ended up finding the big ones . The Best area was right in the weeds, vor i
  12. Hello! New to this but I come across a lot of these threads and wanted to give it a try! I’ve done some fishing on canisteo mine pit for lake trout and have had some good days and very slow days. Was wondering if anybody fishes the taconite side for lake trout in the winter? When I’m out there I never see any traffic out that way so I’m curious if anybody has had success! Thanks Mojo88
  13. I bought a cabin on hand lake this year, and was woundering if there are any ice fishing reports for the area? I noticed that there are not any reports for this area for a long time, maybe thats a good sign, as its all secret. I was located in palisade, and just moved here this year, looking for general info, nothing specific. I can say the ice seems good, if you stay away from the slush.
  14. On the south end... Lots of ice fishing is still happening in some areas while other areas are dealing with ice upheavals due to temperature fluctuations. Some parts of the lake are very accessible, but It is a good idea to call ahead or watch the Facebook page of the resort or outfitter you are fishing with for any updates. Mixed reports. Some catching lots of fish with quite a bit of sorting for keepers happening while others are catching one here, one there. Some nice slot fish (between 19.5 - 28.0 inches) being caught and released. Also some trophy walleyes (28 - 33 inches) caugh
  15. Just a heads up. Ice conditions, and specifically access points have deteriorated rapidly since last weekend. I think our days of driving on to all but a few of our area lakes has come to an end for the season. I have been spending my week in the Annandale and Richmond areas. Most of the access points that are on hills with runoff or have south facing shoreline are gonna take a beating first. The good news is, there is still plenty of ice on the lakes, although they are starting to get sloppy..... and the panfish are starting their yearly push toward the shallows. Stay safe and go
  16. Just checked the ice this afternoon and Shoe has 2.5" of ice and is 100% ice covered with some river current areas. Summer access is no longer open. I will be starting to ice fish as soon as I am done deer hunting in front of my house. I predict a limit of walleyes first night out. Don
  17. While on my way home from work this morning, I seen that Peltier Lake was frozen over. Clear Lake was probably 99% froze over...looked like a couple random little open spots from geese. To my surprise, Forest Lake was completely iced over. Someone was still busting through ice and duck hunting though. This is very encouraging, as I was hoping to hit the ice this weekend, somewhere north of Hinckley. Tonight’s low is supposed to be in upper teens. Anyone else see other lakes?

A little long winded but I'm excited to share. Got out on Tonka 4 times this week. Yes, I'm retired. Bought the Milwaukee 2803-33 and put it on a 6" lazer hand auger that I've had for 20 years but have never used it since I have a gasser too. Very impressed by that set up. Also gave the LiveScope a good work out. Monday afternoon found the sunfish and crappie suspended over a 40-foot hole. Saw fish with the LiveScope with the first set of holes and drilled a few more to get on top of them. Kept 3 of each for fish sandwiches. Tuesday afternoon in the same hole but near the ridg
  19. Anyone been by the Big Trout landing up by Cross Lake, MN in the past week. Wonder how it's holding up?
  20. I am new to this site and was intrigued by some of the conversations. Sounds like a good time gathering in Richmond, wish I could be there but I am in Missouri and wanting to come up for one more ice fishing trip this coming weekend. ( Mar 5-6, 2021) I fished at Cedar Lake in Faribault with my son about a 3 weeks ago and had a blast. I can sneak away one more time this weekend but would like to know what the ice conditions look like now. Can any of you offer me any suggestions as to the thickness and conditions? Looking forward to one more trip to MN this season. (We just do not have good

    5 of Diamonds Pike

Been awhile since I posted. Hope everyone had a great season ice fishing. I have been chasing pike mainly with the Aqua Vu this year and trying different baits. Pulled out the 5 of Diamonds to end the season. Who remembers this one. Anyone use it ice fishing. Thought I Share.
  24. On the south end... Fish houses can be on the ice through March 31st. Walleyes are open through April 14th, pike never close. A good week of fishing despite a number of temperature changes. A variety of walleyes, saugers, perch, pike, tullibee and eelpout being caught in 29-33 feet. Jigging spoons with a glow stick or rattles tipped with a piece of minnow for the jigging line. On the deadstick, a colored hook with a live fathead has been effective. Electronics are helpful to show suspended fish. When suspended fish are spotted, reel up quickly before fish swims through. When your lure
  25. Heading up to snowbank Friday looking to catch lakers and walleyes. I have never been on the lake in the summer. Anyone have some advice
